Should I bother doing the other tape/CD/record??

No, but you could always collate the other odds and sods that weren't on Still and didn't appear under one CD cover until Heart and Soul.

This is the hardest of all polls. Half of this album's studio tracks are in my Top Ten Joy Division tracks.

Dead Souls is unimpeachable, the finest thing laid down to 1" master by any band in the history of making music. Were it not on this record, then I would be torn between Exercise One, Ice Age and Walked In Line.

I'm going with "Dead Souls" as well (100% of the votes so far).

Dead Souls. Excellence out of the speakers!!

Normally I'd go for Dead Souls but assuming there's gonna be a poll for Substance I can vote for it then! I've gone with Ice Age this time. I still believe that this could have been a huge hit had this version been released as a single in late '79/early '80...

Couldn't agree more. This is a blistering version, matched only by the Eindhoven take. Great song to play guitar on as well !!!

Exercise One isn't a very good song, but the production of the Hannett version really makes it a great listen. Dead Souls and Something Must Break are both a few of my faves, but I had to go with The Only Mistake, which I think is one of the band's most underrated songs.

I voted for the one non-original track, "Sister Ray". I had to; this was the track that led me to seek out the Velvet Underground ("Who is this 'Reed/Cale/Morrison/Tucker'?") :thumb:

Taking away that selection, I guess I'd have to go with Sound of Music or Walked in Line, but I already voted for Sister Ray so there

The Sound of Music. I just love the video where they're dressed in Liederhosen running from the Nazis.

Glass for me - must admit this LP's got some killer tracks on it though (Dead Souls, Something Must Break, Exercise One & Sound Of Music)

I absolutely adore Dead Souls; the drums are superb. But I've gone for Something Must Break. I adore it. "Something must break now, this life isn't mine.." I've felt that a few times in my life. :explode:

It's impossible for me to choose. All I can say is that Walked In Line is the least favourite of those studio tracks - but that's saying more about the stunning quality of the other ones!!

Quality, man. Now I have to go and explain my sudden burst of laughter to my wife

Actually, this sets me thinking. Does anyone think they named this song in an attempt to distance themselves from the Nazi allegations ? To show that they too were trying to get away from the Nazis ?

Walked In Line. I've always liked that song.

I vote for Ice Age because it is a song that is very good but often overlooked :)

That would explain this infamous Barney outburst: You all forgot Julie Andrews! :D :p :thumb:

The Only Mistake. Often wondered what (who?) it was about.

Anyone got any ideas?

After reading some of the verdicts on the Joy Division songs that I couldn't get hold of round here (like the Sordide single, the Earcom tracks, etc), I was definitely looking forward to hearing Dead Souls.

After picking up my copy from the local import shop upon its release, and heading straight home, that was the first song I played. I was not disappointed with the build up at all.

Slippy - one small question. What's this obsession with all this "deducing"????

Surely you should be spelling it "De-Juicing" - you know - extracting the urine, so to speak.....?

 :evil4: :D

Dead Souls it is for me

And I hate what that Nine Inch Nail guy did to it!

Something must break. I love its sound.

Hmmmm. "Exercise One" is my favorite Joy Division song, but mainly because of the Peel Sessions version I bought ages ago. "Walked in Line" I voted for the best on Warsaw, and my favorite song that WOULD be here isn't listed (shhhhh .... 'tis a secret)

so I'll pass on this one.

Protest vote:

Where's "Ceremony"???? "Sister Ray's" not only a live track that got included with this poll, BUT THEY DIDN'T EVEN WRITE IT!!!!

"Ceremony" is my vote for the most beautiful chord progressions in JD's catalogue. And best song on Still

The Sound Of Music - the guitars on this always get me rocking!

I had to go with "Something Must Break"...lyrically, it is like Ian's #3 for me. Music is powerful too. Great tune.:thumb:

Dead Souls /The Only Mistake

Agreed on The Only Mistake - It really is an underated song. Still was the first JD I got and it was a cassette (small rectangular thing - grey, I don't think they make them anymore). I always remember that the two songs I liked the most were at opposite ends of the same side (Ceremony and Digital). Used to frustrate the hell out of me... hmm there was a point - I would have voted for the live version of Digital if it were there.
