The most pop association of Lyon, Popswirl has just launched out in adventurous the "perilous one" of compilation "tribute" to a mythical group, in fact New Order. "Perilous" because one can have the apprehension which this album is disproportionate, like so many others in the kind. But the first listening of the album can reassure us on the motivations of the project. The groups (still) not signed which take part in it do not seek to exceed the Masters or to imitate them in a way in conformity. They adopt the optics of personal recoveries, "Temptation" becomes to tend, "Your Silent Face" fragile, and romantic "Blue Monday". Poured which reveals of it finally as much on the personality of each group that on New Order, group complex, with multiple facets. The merit of this compilation is thus double: to make discover these groups with an audience larger than that which can already know them and us (D-)apprendre also much on New Order, which is not only dance the effective group of "Blue Monday", but can also be a goldsmith as regards pop melody. It is high time to go to get information or, better, to join the project as a pre-commander Cd with (small) the tariff of 10 euros. Your name will be reproduced then on the booklet!
How was born this project? Who had the idea within Popswirl of it? Marie: The project was born from an external proposal. A friend fan of New Order, François-Marc, sought an official framework to produce Tribute with New Order. He spoke to me about it and I was immediately filled with enthusiasm by the idea. It should be said that it was a first project which was going to make it possible the asso to launch out whereas it was rather inactive until there. I spoke about it with the others, and one launched out as one could whereas it was our first project "of scale". Ian: Also let us say that this project does not fall by chance... The trick, at the base, was to promote Lyons groups.
Can you summarily present association for those to us which do not know it? Marie: The central idea of association is to create a network of mutual aid between rock'n'roll-pop groups but also between musical artists or actors: photographers, vidéastes, graphic designers, djs, clubs, labels, fanzines... The example that I always give is that of a group tired to put his photographs of holidays on the small pockets of their demonstration and thus seeking a graphic designer or a photographer on the one hand, and of a photographer seeking to make known his work on the other hand. It then appears interesting to connect them so that they can work together. The purpose of association is not first to assist the members but to enable them to meet. Obviously, Internet network is an almost natural extension of this central idea. It makes it possible to create a crossroads, a platform where the members of association can be, to work out projects together, to give consultings, addresses etc. But, association instigates a little the whole: by selecting addresses, while seeking to establish contacts privileged with actors of the musical medium, by organizing concerts, evenings of mix, while making pass the groups to the radio, by presenting a project per annum which gathers all the members or almost... All France is the welcome, even the whole world. The more one can leave his area, the better it is for everyone! This said, the asso begins just (and us also), therefore they are our objectives and our desires. One will do everything to be held to with it! : -) Ian: For the moment that trip! Full with groups present themselves spontaneously, whereas one seriously thought of having to prospect. All that for saying that there is a true will on behalf of all the participants to make move the things. The idea in the more or less long term being to be able to live of our work... ambition when you take to us!
Why New Order? Marie: It is before a whole choice of fan on behalf of François-Marc and a sentimental choice a little... of the mienne. New Order forms part of these groups by which I arrived at the indé rock'n'roll. While thinking a little of the idea afterwards, it quickly appears also that New Order is a major group on the scene... say indé. They represent well the boiling of the scene mancunienne the Eighties around Factory. An alive scene, a little enormously struck nutcase, and involving and inventive. One owes them much in the bringing together between the guitars rock'n'roll and the keyboards dance and they influenced many groups. It thus appeared interesting to ask groups to give their point of view on New Order, which they are in their direct line (I think of the trip-hop groups) or who they remained in the rock'n'roll with guitars. Ian: Moreover, to make discover groups through a tribute of a known group, it is to give them more chances to be listened. I invent anything, but people ready to discover the discs of not signed groups, and/or little known, are rare. There, through their recovery, the personality of the groups shows through, and the listeners attracted by the name of New Order will be able to discover the musical universe of the participants all the same... NO in postrock, trip-hop, garage, rock'n'roll, emopop, folk... it is drôlement owl.
The choice of the groups... Who are they? All are they based in Lyon? how be you re-entered in contact with them? Marie: There are obviously groups of friends: -) But not only. Certain groups were discovered on the Net (Web and forums), others were Lyons groups which I knew to have seen them in concert, to have bought and have liked their music, to have contacted them for an emission of radio that I animate with Ian (http://accordspop.free.fr). One primarily contacted them by email. The geographical origins of the groups are very varied: north of France, Belgium, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand. It is a diversity which allows meetings and discoveries which would perhaps not have been done differently. The Lyons groups often know each other, and not always and I think that it is important to further see its local scene. Often, the groups wish to leave their area... jump the step! Ian: Even if one remains as much as possible open, one nevertheless refused two, three groups which did not sound too much as it was felt. I have anything against the heavy or the French song, it is just not our trick. Fan of music above all.
