linen box cassettes

whilst going through the brotherhoods (see other thread) noticed that all my cassettes in linen boxes except lowlife have little semi circular cut outs at the edge to aid opening.

given that i have 3 different types of tape for brotherhood - is this a variance that is widely available or were they all like that on low-life?

(have 2 x substance, 3 x brotherhood, 1 x low-life & 1 x p, c & l)

HIBBY is out of his box again!

D'ya know - I don't know!

I've got "Low-Life", "Brotherhood" and "Substance" (and all the JD ones and the Mondays' "Squirrel & G Man...") but never noticed whether any of them have NOT got the cut out thumb holes!

Old Blue will know but I'll check when I get home...!!!

Yeah, make me go in the loft why don't you?!

Got all the JD and NO ones, plus 2 ACR ones, all have the cut-outs.

you have them in the loft??

so my low life is diiferent to yours? do they all have the chequered edges as described previously?

(go on - get that ladder out again!)

The linen boxes are safely in the loft, but the actual casettes are in normal boxes in a drawer downstairs! (All came about from when I used to play tapes in the car).

Still and Brotherhood have the "chequered" tape edges, but the rest are normal looking.

God, this is nearly as anal as the discussion about what notes JD are playing in the photo on JDCentral...

Did someone say anal collectors' discussion?

Good a time as any to end my exile. My Low Life edition has the semi-circle cut too.

Shall we move on or explore Perfect Kiss 12" inner sleeve colours?

Quality thread. For the obsessives.

Factory released 22 albums in this format and I'm ashamed to confess I have 21 of them. Blasted Wim Mertens.

I've just checked and they all have the semi circular tab cut out. Dunno 'bout Wim, but a pattern would appear to be emerging so I would guess that one is the same.

Did you know they were colour coded in line with a rainbow? oh you did, well I've got the taste for it now so I'll carry on. Check;

Red: Durutti Column Orange: Happy Mondays Yellow: Blasted Wim Mertens Green: Section 25 Blue: ACR Indigo: Quango Quango Violet: Joy Division

and then NO in white and a Railway Children one in grey.

Anyone got a spare Wim Mertens?

Am I true in saying that the linen boxes were discontinued by Factory due to Woolworths complaining that they didn't fit in there shelves?  I remember reading something like this years ago!

Woolworth's indeed complained about their cassette displays being spoilt by these large boxes.I don't know if they refused to stock them though. What i do know is when one of the BOXSET's was released in a fairly limited quantity they were ALL sent to WOOLIES in the NORTHWEST.I will try and find the article you mean because there is something about this that i have read before. Wasn't Substance only stocked in Woolworths?

That was where I got mine from, when there used to be a Woolies in Welwyn Garden (a long time ago)! :D

Oh, and to answer the original question, my copy of Low Life also has the semi-circular hole cut out!

l8rs,

Nick ;)

I think it was Substance. I also think this info came from some dodgy Record Collector pullout ages ago. The discography in this pullout was bollocks I seem to remember, but I am sure this is where I got the original info on the TPK 2x12" acetate!

Cheers Nick, tis indeed a beautiful item.

I have the album on Crespecule, which is where the majority of Wim Merten's stuff is released, but alas, this beguiling little yellow box continues to evade me.

Me too, thinking about it.

did anyone not get them from woolies? (ebay doesnt count)

I think the only stocked in Woolworths story was right. I definitely got mine from there. What has never been proved or otherwise is whether only 2000 were made, rather than the 20,000 that Wilson ordered. Judging by the frequency with which they crop up on ebay, I guess not.

Durutti ones also had a certain Woolies-ness about them.

I went to Woolies in Truro on holiday one year and they had Return Of..., LC and Without Mercy in boxes. I bought LC and afterwards wished I'd bought the Other Two (sorry).

Anyway, I went back a year later on holiday and they were still there! So I got 'em both. And very chuffed I was too. Ahh, a happy ending.

Are everyone's pristine? All my New Order ones suffered at the hands of my grubby adolescent mitts. In fact, looking at them now, I wonder if I ever actually washed my hands between the ages of 13 and 17...........
