Can anyone explain why the lyrics to this tune have changed? Watching 3/16 the Taras version and the Reading version are really different.

taras' temptation was a 'work in progress,' you could say: the band were trying out something new and continued working on it, experimenting with different lyrics. best known: 1987 version.
Temptation was played for the third time ever, according to NOOL, during Taras. The first time it was an instrumental. I think Barney was pulling the words out of his head during that performance.
I think it is the fact that they would create the song and add the lyrics last. Anxiety about Ian. Or maybe they never practice of rehearse enough. Songs formed by live performances. You rarely get this with other bands. But even at Finsbury Barney said that they were glad to play a new song (Brutal)
This happened with quite a few NO songs up until Technique, Low-Life being the last real peak of gig creativity. Examples being the "cock" version of TPK, "furhat" debut of Face-up being the most notorious.
Sometimes there are real gems. The Newcastle 82 gig has a version of Leave me alone, the second time they aired the tune, that lyrically is 99% different from what it became although instrumentally the same. Some early Sooner Than You Think performances were quite spectacular and .
Also keep in mind that Barney has trouble remembering his lyrics and has been known to insert a "penis" reference in a tune from time to time.
