This has been brought up before, I'm sure, but I forgot the answer. 
Is there any indication if Ceremony was originally intended to be part of the new JD album or to be released as another non-album single. Same question goes for IALP, though perhaps it was always intended to be a b-side to Ceremony. 
I guess we'll never know. JD went through phases of churning out new songs, and there is no way we'll ever know whether Ceremony and IALP were just the next two off the production line for an album, or were earmarked for a single. Let's face it, Atrocity Exhibition, Dead Souls, Colony and The Sound of Music were all around a long time before they were recorded, and it is likely that they would have spent some time touring/promoting the Closer stuff before releasing any new singles. Interesting, but academic. I wish we knew !
As far as I can tell, Ceremony and In A Lonely Place were the first new songs the band was working on after the recording sessions for Closer had been finished (the Jack magazine interview suggests that early takes were recorded in a proper studio, not just in rehearsal). I doubt they were already thinking about which songs to include on their next album, seeing that Closer was still in the pre-release stages (mp3's had not even started circulating on the usenet newsgroups!). A future single release may have been contemplated, but again, Love Will Tear Us Apart wasn't released until June, so I'm not sure they had already set their minds on what should have been the next single. In sum, I don't really know. Maybe I think too much.
