New Order have hired some right monkeys over the years to open for them, but who would you give your vote to as the absolute pits on the support front ?
My vote goes to the particularly shoddy Chat Show at Oxford 86. Mind you, the Wonderstuff weren't a lot better when they opened Brum 86 either !
Circus Girls were quite possibly the worst band i have ever had the misfortune to suffer ear damage from.

Yep the Wonder Stuff probably gets my vote along with Primal Scream at Wembley Arena - awful racket. Apart from that I haven't really seen many of NO's support bands apart from stuff like Factory in the Park and G-Mex when ACR and Mondays were in support. And that band in Paris who were on just before NO on the Sunday - dear oh dear...
Worst one I've seen is Stereo MC's in 93...I never did like the bastards...should have left those gobshites off and then the order could have done their encore...ah well...
Don't remember any support at Oxford, Tim, though do remember a firm of young lads (and when I say 'young' I mean YOUNG - I was only 17 at the time, and none of this lot could've been more than 13), all in JoyDiv t-shirts, mobbing up and picking on other little kids!! Quite funny.
Do remember the Stuffies (can't believe I just called them that!) being bottled at Woolwich in 87 and my then girlfriend getting really upset about New Order fans being so 'violent'.
Don't do support bands as a rule, even ones I like. Remember ACR at Hammersmith moaning that no one was dancing to them?
Playing 2nd fiddle to Outkast in the US this summer has to be a lo-point though!

Yeah, they were on really early. A local band called Chat Show, very Goth-like. I was outside flogging tapes of Bradford, Wolves and Warrington, and we went rushing in when we heard they were on stage, but it was absolute wank. Sat in my seat for their set, then went down the front ten mins before TPK started up. Those kids were tossers, remember them quite well. I was a 20 year old "veteran" then, looking disdainfully at them thinking "hope I didn't appear like that back in 82" !!
I stopped watching support bands after this - never really had beforehand until my mates The Beloved got Doncaster and Hemel 85. After a dismal Monsters at Brum the week before Doncaster, I had 2nd thoughts about watching The Beloved, but they were one of the better ones. Even booked 'em for some gigs I promoted in 86, now there's the seal of approval !

don't you think that if New Order had come on after Outkast, they would have had the same problem Moby had??? I mean Moby is frantic, boucing all over the place with endless energy, and yet he couldn't hold a candle to their "act"...
I've always observed NewOrder fans to treat support bands with mild disdain and an almost complete disinterest in the music played, preferring to spend either stand motionless preserving their spot at the front of stage or stockpiling up at the nearest bar before the mighty NO appear. :)

Some bunch of Cretins called Big Yoga Muffin or something who supported Monaco at The Scala last year. Not only were they shit, with a crap name, their bass player really pissed me off by acting all big rock star. Allen, did you go to this gig perchance?

Yeah, I was there. Quite a few New Order lads were there. Well, you've got to for Hooky, haven't you? Keef Allen and Alex from Blur were also knocking about - Keef, disappointingly, was even smaller than Hooky. Sound was terrible, from what I remember.
I thought the whole thing was pretty terrible to be honest - didn't really get me going at all.

I'd forgotten them ! I didn't enjoy that one as much as Brum and Malvern the previous two nights, but at least it was better than the Albert Hall :)
