Hooky's playing a two hour DJ set at our "Talkin' 'Bout An Education" night at Tom Tom Bar & Diner 207 Bath Street Glasgow. The tag line is "interesting people playing interesting records" and that pretty much sums it up (Pat Nevin and SSP leader Tommy Sheridan are booked in for Oct and Nov).

It's a relaxed affair in a chilled out bar setting (no dancefloor) so it'll be a good opportunity to hear a bit of what floats Hookys boat musically.

Be good to see some of you up in fabulous Glasvegas.

The night runs from 8 til midnight and entry is free (just make sure you spend at the bar!).

I'm sure I was in Tom Tom bar when I was up in Glasgow for training earlier this year. It was a really laid back atmosphere if I remember rightly and definitely nice for chilling out (was just a bit drunk so my memory is failing me a bit. Sounds like an ace venue to have the DJ set.

I also remember being in another bar called Bunker, or something like that, which was also really nice, and then clubbing at Shack which was right next to where I was staying, but the rest is all a bit of a blur!!

Interesting to see that Client poster there. I downloaded a bunch of Client MP3s off a server a few months ago and to be honest I didn't think much of them. Not to say I wasn't quite fond of Dubstar in their prime; the first album was the perfect fusion of New Order/PSB influences and better than anything The Other Two have come out with to boot, plus Sarah Blackwood's quite sexy :love2:

Client sounded like a great idea but just came across to me as a duo too fond of programming cold drum machine patterns long into the night. "The Price of Love" was a decent single but I still think Ladytron do a better job of that sort of stuff (i.e. Playgirl, Evil, and Blue Jeans) Don't get me wrong, good luck to them, but I feel they need to move beyond 80s drum machines and the Blue Monday chord sequence. Plus they should stop trying to be the female Kraftwerk so much, that can get extremely tedious after a few tracks, especially when these days anyone with a half-decent grasp of synthesiser technology could program one of their songs perfectly in an evening or so.

The new album might be worth checking out tho, if the MP3s prove good listening I would buy it (of course) :D Hehe, otherwise it's the Recycle Bin as most of the first album went.

No offence to the girls, like, but I think you'd be well disappointed with the second album, if you weren't sure about the first, Ally. Too much 'perfect pop' and none of the 'harder' track like Pills off the first album. I mean, it's alright, but a bit, um, 'girlie' (which you would expect when made by girls, right?).

Thanks for the review Al. That is a bit disappointing from what you're saying :( I'm not so sure about "Client B" or whoever she is (wasn't she in the short-lived "Technique"? Alan McGee's wife?) but Sarah Blackwood I always felt has an amazing voice that fits electronic pop music perfectly. I listened to "Client" and then the Dubstar best of and there was really no comparison musically/lyric-wise, different songwriters though. "Client" sounds like it was done BEFORE the '96 Dubstar stuff :confused2: Stuff like Not So Manic.. and the acoustic version of Elevator Song outshine anything I've heard by the girls so far. That's unfortunate, but as I said hopefully alot of the Ladytron crowd will like it and give them some sort of indie success. But personally it's not really my cup of tea.

Wrong way round. Sarah is "Client B", Kate is "Client A".

Sarah actually took over "the other blonde bird"s role in Technique temporarily before they cemented themselves as Client - you can hear Sarah and Kate as 'Technique' HERE

More Client stuff....Client F is also involved....Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode is their manager. With Client A being married to Mr 'Poptones' Alan Mcgee, they are one well connected outfit.

If you're looking to dip your toe in the water, 'Here And Now', Cicada mix would be my tip. Deep, dark and dirty electronica.

Best way to catch 'em live is at their club night 'Being Boiled', 2nd Tuesday of each month in Notting Hill. Nice lo-fi vibe with the notaries mentioned above knocking about & all gratis before 8pm.

Just to confirm, despite what has been written, this gig IS 100% HAPPENING. Not sure who or what is behind the rumours otherwise. But as I said a few weeks ago, would be great to see some of you guys down on Sunday.

Special thanks to Shug, Al Jarvis, Johnny G ands Nic for makin the effort. It's gonna be a belter!

A small piece was printed in Scotland's paper THE DAILY RECORD. Unfortunately the paper printed a picture of Barney instead of Hooky. Shows they research the entertainment as much as the football :evil4:

Is there a picture in yours? No picture in my edition.

For anyone north of the border there are three interviews with Hooky promting the gig in todays Metro, last night's Evening Times and this fortnight's edition of The List (which uses a photo from about 1977!).

Hi everyone, I was going to be showing up on Sunday night but a family matter's (nothing serious) come up rather unexpectedly so I won't be able to make it :( I spoke to Shug over email (thanks mate) a few days ago and said I'd probably be there but now that looks like it's blown out of the water this time. Anyway, everyone have a good time + a beer for me Be interesting to know what Hooky's spinning records-wise these days so don't keep any choice tracks to yourselves plus any tales of encounters with the great man ;)

So what did we all think?

Good 2 c Muffy, Shug, Shades, 4.45, Alan Jarvis & Graham Ferguson down there. Hooky played a load of good stuff including 24 hr ppp, SLC by Grace Jones & a bunch of NO tracks... Regret, Crystal, 60 mph, True Faith, mixes of Blue Monday & Temptation. Then a new song! I offered him a fiver for the CD with the new song on it but he wouldnt have it ;-) sensible fella.

Special thanks 2 Graham for looking after us this weekend. It was appreciated mate!.

Quality night. Always a pleasure to see everyone again!

New track at the end of the night, but can't say I liked it that much on first listen. Reminded me of Such A Good Thing for some reason? Mind, I never like NO tracks on first listen!!! Rest of the set was superb though - Regret, Crystal, Temptation, True Faith, Tranmission, etc. Plus a bizarre LWTUA which mixed the lines 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and 'Love Will Keep Us Together'. The Grace Jones SLC also had Curtis mixed into it.

Just left Shuglet at Luton airport and he looks a wreck of a young man. Bless. Didn't get his head down till 7.30 this morn' and sat up with the Hookmeister half the night asking questions but not remembering any of the answers.

And I've got some CRACKING photos to put on the site tomorra!

I am alive, but only just.

Fuckin wrecked last night, so first off I'd like to apologise to Hooky for talking pure shite and asking mad questions. If Grahame can remind me what I asked I'd be much obliged, I do remember saying that we should have Age Of Consent back on the set list - I can remember Muffy asking about The Perfect Kiss. The rest will hopefully come back to me. Hooky was a fuckin gent, God only knows how many questions were put his way, but he did his best to answer all of them. Baldrick phoned me at 2.30am and I passed the phone to Hooky who told Baldrick to fuck off. Quality.

A MASSIVE thank you to Grahame, not only for putting me up, but also for putting on one of the most memorable nights ever :clap:

Twas also great to meet up with Jarvo, Johnny Boy Giles, The new improved Muffster, Johan Scott, Shades and everyone else. I did say hello to Pat Nevin - unfortunately I missed Craig Burley.
