Joy Divisioin nominated for U.K Music Hall of Fame induction

Joy Division will be one of the 10 nominees from the 80's who will go up for a public vote to be inducted into the U.K Music Hall Of Fame . The show will be broadcast on Channel 4 at 9PM on Sunday night. Whoever has the most votes (votes can only be made by phone not on the internet) will automatically be inducted. (Bear in mind - Joy Division are up against R.E.M and other massive 80's bands and we all know what the British public are like when it comes to voting. Lets face it, almost as bad as America. JD needs all the support they can get!

I'd vote for JD, but I live in the U.S. I hope they get in.

Well, REM have been around just as long...but I'll always go for JD any day. Hands down.

No NO yet as they havaen't been around long enough me thinks in their incarnation as NO. Once they've been around for 25 years officially (as NO) then they can be nominated me thinks.

JD only existed for 138 days out of 10 years, seems a strange nomination in their own right.

U2 are one of the 5 "founding members" of the Hall of Fame, as selected by the "steering group".

The Rolling Stones are not one of the other four. I guess that says it all...

we've just had mr paul morley, carrie grant (fame academy) and theakston on our show talking about the 80's nominations. clips of wham, duranx2, frankiegoestohollywood and prince were shown so that may be a clue to the competition. when asked who they would personally say was the artist of the 80's they said respectively : joydivision / new order ; annie lennox / the eurythmics and theakston curiously nominated nirvana as his band of the 80's. perhaps someone (not me) should explain to him that a decade can only last 10 years. unfortunately I think DD are a shoo-in a) they're british and successful abroad b) popshit irrelevance has turned into irony and nostalgia and more importantly c) they've reformed and will be able to attend being somewhat cynical about the television process I'm not entirely convinced by the concept of people power in these events. paul morley's always a nice chap though

I'd be surprised if New Order weren't in the 80s programme, either with Joy Division or on their own. How many decades are they looking at, out of interest?

The guy on Richard and Judy SPECIFICALLY said "Joy Divison - New Order" so I guess they are combined.

Isn't Tony Wilson on the voting board?

Anyhow, haven't some British bands been inducted into the US Hall Of Fame?

And, yeah, the music that's played in the trailer (which includes "Blue Monday") doesn't necessarily mean that the band will be nominated...

Was on the TV in the 'server room' (the room formerly known as my living room before the addition of some webservers). I couldn't find the remote, or my Palm (OmniRemote) so I left it on Richard and Judy.

The TV listings have said Joy Division, The Smiths and REM.

As for voting I have a major dilema, I am both a massive Joy Division and a massive Smiths fan.

I think they probably decided it was too much to feature both Joy Division and New Order. I would have thought Joy Division was more of a 1970's band though. In many ways I think New Order may have been a better feature. Joy Divison are probably more of the cult band though.

Either way I am looking foward to this TV programme and it has been a long time since I have said that.

I don't know whether The Cure is nominated... If so, they'll win because they have a wider fan base. And because, it's the Cure... :(

I also have a question: if they nominate 80s bands now, does it mean that the 70s are beyond already in that English Hall of Fame?

And I'm not really fond of the idea of putting JD into a museum-like spotlight. Let them be forever in the darkness :) Actually they ara always like that: honestly, how many people nowadays aware of them? And that's fine with me. That's the way I discovered them one day - out of nowhere, and none of my mates could say anything about them...

I think I used to be all hopped-up for the idea of JD in any sort of R'n'R Museum, but I can't say I'm 100 percent about it now. When you think about it, museums are places where art is admired from a distance. No matter how close you get to a painting, you can't really touch it or examine it in more detail. Same thing with artifacts: when it's behind a glass case, that means you can't touch it and get a feel for it.

I'm not saying museums should allow either of those things, but it seems to me that music is inherently unable to be captured and put in storage like that.

But in terms of recognition, it's great, because people are constantly discovering JD and NO. So it might be more of a boon than a blunder to have them in there.

Well that's weird because JD isn't an 80s band, late 70s more like. And in the advert there was a bit of Blue Monday playing in the background. Strange...

Oh and btw, Michael Jackson will win.

Well since this the 1980's I am guessing it is an fact New Order are that are being inducted not Joy Division. However Joy Divison probably make more interesting TV hence the listing. If New Order are being featured then there will be considerable Joy Divisino footage. As somebody said here they are virtualy the same band.

Also I think you would be surprised about Joy Division/New Orders popularity. Joy Division are a bit of a cult status especialy amongst students.

well ive just watched this in its entirety and tbh whom would you vote for?. the list is like a whos who of pop (popular music). jacko,prince,g michael,rem,b springsteen,pubic enemy,beastiality boys,smiths,guns n poses,joy division. i think thats it? if its a hall of "FAME" then jacko would win hands down,but seeing the other noms it would tend to suggest influence on others since. there again whom would you vote for?. all of the above have contributed in some way to "pop" note i said "POP" music. the fact that jd got mentioned at all is a testament to their talent and musisc. some of the comments made by steve and more so by hooky suprised me. hooky described how he was gutted (deeply upset) by ians death whereas in previous interviews hes seemed detached or more concerened with his own situation than what was going around him and to me this was a big BIG putting the record straight interview. i enjoyed watching the show but hardly expect jd to win but if they did id be over the moon,if not for myself but for new order as i deeply feel they deserve the recognition. and if it was up to me they would be the 6th "by rights entry into the hall of fame. i could bang on n on bout this but im knackered and off to bed nn.

Watched the show last night,very disappointed. Yeah it was great to see Joy Division being included with the likes of Guns N Roses,Prince and Jacko-howeveri really felt it should have bee NewOrder up there. JD were finished by summer 1980 and the impact they had was as someone else stated in the late 70`s.

NewOrder were at their most prolific in the 1980s-6 albums,including "Substance" which contained only 3 tracks previously included on other albums! The likelyhood of NewOrder ever getting recognition now is fading fast-they cant be in the 70s,only released "Republic" in the nineties,and are sadly no longer main players on the music scene.

Does anyone know what Shaun Ryder was on about, bearing in mind he can't string two sentences together. Bit rich saying Ian was of his face when Ryder was of his face.

Yeah I noticed that, you can't really take any notice of what he says though. I personaly think the best thing Ryder ever did was helped to get Chris Evans of our TV screens.

Watched (& taped) the show, & like the rest of u I was pissed off that NO didnt get the recognition they deserve; but im more pissed off that we cant vote from over here in the peoples republic of ireland.
