yeah, coz it's loads different to JD, had Procession on the same EP, got a great title, and was classic Indie dance. and lots of other stuff besides

The best performance on Taras Shevchenko, hands down (though the early Temptation was pretty moving)

I love EGG because it rocks and yet it grooves. A rarity indeed!

always been an advocate for the early "buried" classics :)

I was actually thinkin starting a StateOfTheNation appreciation society along the same lines of EverythingsGoneGreen.

I never really paid any special attention to SOTN (as indeed i didnt too EGG until recently) although i didnt skip it on Brotherhood for the first time in ages last nite (i was feelin generous!) and it was really really refreshing hearing it again, some good lyrics and a nice melodic backing track.

As for EGG i watched a live performance of it on vid couple of weeks back which re-affirmed my liking of it.. simple yet effective and sincere.

How long is the version on the 12"? I love EGG but i want a longer version. Some live versions are up to 20 minutes long.

I know Substance is 6-7 minutes (maybe shorter), so that would be interesting to run across a longer version

One of the poorer singles IMHO. Nearly always skip over this from Ceremony to Temptation.

Hmmm, would be interesting to note the differences in favourite tracks from older to newer fans. Possibly.

Yes, it has been known!

The 20min version is from Bradford 84 and it is actually a medley of EGG/Temptation/568 but i'm sure they could have worked out an 8 minute version for the 12".

Count me into the Egg Cup... I fucking love the song.

Best thing for me is that unbelievable arpeggiator that goes... du du da da da da da du du du du du... marvellous! - couple the repetative synth with 'real drums' to a dance beat and wow!... then you've got Barney and 'that' melody... and the ending.... fucking hell amazing.

For similar reasons I also enjoy the synth part on Tempting Miss Daisy... Du du du du du du du da da da.

Only song they've put this on lately is Someone Like Geoff Klumpy... and that's why I like that as well.

On the subject of medleys circa 84, there's one gig - Hull Civic Hall, where half the set seems to segue together until Lonesome Tonight (track 6 or something). Blue Monday, EGG/Temptation/586 - great show if anyone wants it !

Yep, always been a big fan of EGG...raw techno...always was a big favourite at our 'alternative' night down the local discotheque.

SOTN is also very under rated, it sounds better now than it did when it was originally released...like a fine wine, it matures with age.

Why do I love EGG? Have always liked it from the start, but it took a place near to my heart hearing it on a Bay Area radio station at 4:00 am while I was driving into Oakland for my first ever concert of NO later that day (year was 1985).

Seems like I've been here before as well, for I can still remember those 5 minutes viewing the lights of the cities as I neared my destination while the radio was cranked to the max, and shivers went down my spine. Just one of those perfect moments that rarely happen.

EGG stands as a perfect representation of NO - other-worldly yet unbelievably powerful and danceable.

Bobby Gillespie once echoed my thoughts when he said he had never and would never hear another song that sounds anything like it.

I honestly think the song is really important historically and is always underrated when people go on about NO's influence on dance/rock developments. This was 1981 remember! Credible "alternative" bands didn't go near the word "dance".

It's a heart-stopping moment of genius.

And it's got a nice cover.

I don't think there would have been Temptation without EGG, it's a logical progression of it. Shame they didn't play it on the recent tour.

Talking of which, two blokes I overheard at Brixton were saying it would have been good if they'd done Shadowplay. Good, but unlikely I would think - there are quite a few JD songs that I could never imagine Barney trying, and Shadowplay and New Dawn Fades would be pretty high up on that list

Instead of those remixes that no-one likes, why dont they chuck a few live tracks from the recent tour on singles?

From my limited sample of two gigs, they wouldn't even have to find the best version!!!!

I'd rather they put two or three original songs on each single, maybe a different new song on each version of the cd single. That way there's a proper incentive to buy it instead of feeling compelled to buy a cd1 & 2 when you know the remixes will be duffers.

But in fairness Muff, they're simply not going to put 2 or 3 b-sides on each single release. by putting the live performances on they don't even have to get off their lazy arses

That would probably suit them right down to the ground! A compromise then, one original song and one live song on each cd version of the single. As well as the customary remixes of course.

As well as the customary remixes of course. after the pathetic attempts of gracing us with some "live performances" on the crystal dvd i'd rather they didnt bother!! brief snippets of the 316dvd which i will never view again seeing as i have the dvd anyway. call me cynical but spare us the cheap marketing ploys to buy something that any fan worth his salt will already own. NewOrder are a cultured,mature band. Little titbits like that should be confined to the teenypop bands of this age in my opinion.

I'm not particularly a fan of the live stuff being released one track at a time but at least it would make the singles a little more interesting.

Definitely a good song... There's a 13-minute version on the 1981 Glastonbury concert (C.N.D. Festival), which used to be available on this site.
