My Top Ten for the Year that Was

Boy what a year...a shitty, shitty year. I struggled to fill out my list with ten selections, but I had to tack on a couple of older album that I just purchesed this year in order to get that! So bear with me as I present...Taboo # 7's Best of 2001!

1. New Order, Get Ready tied w/the Green Album, Weezer 2.Amnesiac, Radiohead 3.Satillite Rides, Old 97's 4.Les Bains Douches, Joy Division 5.I Might Be Wrong EP, Radiohead 6.BBC Sessions 1964-1977 (The Songs We Sang For Auntie), The Kinks 7.The Kids Are Alright reissue (nevermind the totally unnecessary My Generation Blues medley), The Who and the two old ones
2. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan 9.The Modern Lovers' one offical album

I only count nine, Taboo. But I didn't even buy or download ten albums this year. And didn't Dylan's Blonde . . come out in 60s or 70s? Do you mean love and theft? I haven't heard it yet but I promised myself I would. Anyway, here's my top whatever of cds I actually listened to in their entirety this year:

1. Get Ready
2. Amnesiac
3. I might be wrong live recordings
4. The Invisible Band (not too impressed)

I think that's it. Maybe I should drop out of school so I can listen to more music.

Well, Iain, I said it was hard coming up with a list, and while both the last two came out years ago, they were the two best purchases I made besides the others on the list this year, so i threw thecnicallity to the wind

That's cool, Taboo. I think I had a top four and a half so I really appreciate the effort you gave. But have you listened to love and theft yet? Rolling Stone gave it five stars but from friends I've heard it's a hard listen.

You don't have to reply, Taboo. If I were you, I'd sit on the 666 for a while. I guess my first milestone will be 69!!! :D

i absolutely disagree with this 2001 was a bad year for music nonsense, so much so that i`ll have great trouble narrowing it down to the 10 best records...

Well, Jeff, I actually bought two cd's this year that were not NO.

shugster im not just being contrary for the sake of it, this year ive bought loads more new albums than usual and whats more ive genuinely enjoyed most of my purchases (and im quite fussy). generally the albums that get the heavy in yer face media exposure and are bought in droves are shite, but apart from that there are 100s of thousands of albums released every year which just cant be dismissed out of hand; sometimes you have to search out the good stuff, but it is there.

Any chance of any examples VG. I can't think of more than 4 or 5 other artist albums (not compiliations coz I bought loads of them) that I even looked twice at

and quite a few more as well...

It was a crap year for music really.... i think the only things i bought released this year were:

2. Tomcats Screaming Outside - Roland Orzabal

4. White Blood Cells - White Stripes
5. We Love Life - Pulp
6. The Altogether - Orbital
7. Missile / Canyon EP's - VOY

Cheers VG, have to be honest I've hearda few of those albums and not really got into them, Plaid/SFA for example, but I may check out some of the others. I didn't realise Funk D'void had released an album yet, and I have heard and liked the Beta Band album

i thought compared to what they're capable of, the SFA album was lame. I thought it said it all when they released a Lighthouse family soundalike as a first single, and a dead ringer for Status quo as a second.

VG I don't want to sound all anal and stuff, but it's well worth having a listen to some of their less obvious stuff..i.e non-singles. I'm less a fan of their big cheesey trancers (of which they do 2 an album) than the more considered rap tracks..ie. Bring my family back, Reverence and Muhammed Ali

uggghhh! contemplative, new age, self help, ambient rap bollox courtesy of maxi! just another reason to hate faithless if u ask me. considering evry other person between the ages of 16 and 25 seems to be into faithless, theres no getting away from their music for me im afraid.

Plaid, Roots Manuva, Two lone Swordsmen --- all great choices, I wish I had a better memory. Faithless is 21st Century pop music. Nothing more, nothing less. I did like the song about the baseball hat on the first album but they are in the same league as Madonna, Kylie, Brittney, NSync etc...

no matter how much you try to block something out relentless exposure to it, unfortunately means that whether you like it or not it will seep into your consciousness. 2months spent working in a boutique managed by a faithless obsessive has left me with an unwanted familiarity with them. So correct me if Im wrong(and let me assure its not a proud moment for me, quoting faithless lyrics) but "muhammed ali" sounds a helluva lot like a self- help song to me. And I quote "your achievements beyond belief from the belly of the beast rises like yeast. You are my relief from low self esteem…". And what about "the liontamer"? the lyrics are new agey style, get-in-touch-with-yourself pseudo-spiritual guff. This may be what you look for in music but not me, mate. Once again, how does it go "if you have a thing in the centre of your life that lacks power to nourish it will poison and destroy all that u are.." or something along those lines. And the first track on the album had some "peace in your soul" type nonsense, cant remember too well…and theres 2 more albums worth of this oh so spiritual, contemplative clap trap.Is this stuff meant to be profound and thought provoking? Well if it is, I dont get it and all you maxi disciples are welcome to it. I agree with brian its only pop music and as meaningless(to me at least) as any other pop act. So now lets agree to differ, horses for courses and all that.
