Not a surprise for anyone, I'm working on a new version of this website for the upcoming album, trying to make the website a little "better". This version won't be "launched", you'll see bits here and there when I'll upgrade the website.. of course the one you won't miss is the forum update, but I warn you now that both forum systems will work side-by-side in the transition period (with the same database, no worry, it's just to make sure everything works fine before unplugging the old ones). Most moderators have seen then, I believe the feedback so far is positive.

On the other hand, the thing I have always hated on this website is the menu, I mean, I've never been able to split the sections properly IMHO. I believe I found a new way, and I hope most people will enjoy it, but I need any input that can help... to those who only visit the forum, just keep lurking :D

OK, so first of all, the pull down menus will be REMOVED, it means you will never see menu options while moving on the menu bar above.

Why? Quite simple.. if you ever have the chance to check the source code of any page on the website, this generates so many script that it's a bandwidth killer, and slows down the website big time. And to be honest, the only positive thing about it was able to move from forum to forum, and you will still have the possibility since the new forums have an active drop down list to do so.

When you click on the menu option, you'll end up in the section's main page. Example, if you click FORUMS, you'll go on the forum index page.. it seems too few people visit this page, but the new one, you'll want to see it ;)

So here we go, I'm throwing my ideas.. I've surfed the net and I've seen a lot of official band sites, and I don't know why they never seem to be complete, there is always a section missing. Funny fact, it's the official Oasis website that seems to be the closest one to what is NewOrderOnline :eek3:

So the sections:

HOME

Bring you back to the main page of the site, same as clicking the logo in case you never noticed.

NEWS

This section can't be merged with anything else, it just can't. Always the place for News & Upcoming Events.

MUSIC

Discography... maybe also entry point for the song browser.

TOUR

Always hated the term "Gigography", so we'll resume to TOUR.. it's better than the actual "LIVE" is it? Concert Database (soon to be corrected with most updates done by oldMonkey). Will also link to other places.

AUDIO/VIDEO

Media means nothing, isn't it? This section needs a major face-lift IMHO.

FORUMS

Since it's the most popular section of NewOrderOnline.. it would be stupid to hide it under the last item of the menu (see below)... although it should be there.. but let's face it.. most people here only use this button.

BAND

Biography, FAQ, Articles, Interviews all stuff related to the band. Problem here is, I can't call it New Order, can I? this website isn't only about New Order. Original idea in the past was to have individual pages for each of the band's member and put all stuff related to them... so Electronic would be on Bernard's page.. :scratch:

The picture gallery should be there as well... I guess.

COMMUNITY

It scares me to reuse this term, we all know the menu above right now is about the tribute album, however I always hated the word "fanclub", especially since we are NOT a fanclub, but a Community of fans :D

There would be the Member Browser, everything related to the membership, the chat room, a link to the forum even if it has its own menu, the famous page about tribute bands I wanted to do... stories! to make it short, everything related to the members of this site.

Will probably be About Us/Contact Us too. I plan to delegate a lot of things in the future to ease my task, but it can't be done unless I work the things to allow people to work.. like entering news and other stuff.

So that's it for now... but there are still things that needs to be somewhere in there and might not fit... links for instance.. this one might have its own menu item, it's short anyways :D

So your input is welcomed... if you have suggestions for the name of the items or where sections should be, do not hesitate... :idea:

I would leave the LIVE section name as it is. Because the term "TOUR" has its limitations. In 1998 there were no "tours" but simply concerts at several venues. :smoking:

Quite right sir. It should stay as "Live" - this captures everything in terms of live performance, whereas "Tours" are only restricted to a few countries and are very few and far between. Some bands do tour their latest album, playing a set consisting of tracks from that album plus a few greatest hits. New Order have never plugged a new album in that way.

ShugZV is testing it in FireFox... and it does work ;)

Although he said something about scrollbars, but we'll work it out. On my computer in FireFox it's working fine.

The drop downs will not be missed. Half the time I end up on the wrong area because of them.

Noticed lately that NOOL has been slow. Was considering that this may be because of the new lp hype. Anything you can do to speed this place up would be appreciated.

It's because we're getting a lot of new people, and we're #1 in Google for new order, so this really brings a lot of people.. we weren't in google for a while.

We're so close to the 3,000,000th visitor it's scary.

About the forum: I'd like an option which shouldn't be too difficult because I've seen it on way more basic forums: the option to send any message to yourself via E Mail. I like to archive some on my computer. Of course I already receive the messages of the thread I subscribe. But there are TWO kinds of messages I can't archive (if I don't select, copy, paste on client and send to myself, which takes time): 1 My own messages! 2 The messages posted before I subscribed to the thread. Please put an icon so I can just click it and the message can be sent to my E Mail address. Thank you.

The drop down menus seem to generate random script errors for me every now and again. After I get the first, every menu I go near generates the same one.... Anyone else get that problem?

Hi Nick. This is a good site you have going, some points:

Get rid of the PCL boxes on the top right hand corner of the page.

The site shouldn’t read from the far left hand corner of my screen to the far right hand corner of the screen. “Centre” the design so to speak.

Change the name and URL. “NewOrderOnLine” is 14 characters long.

Get ads, generate money for yourself, and the site. I hear Google ads are where its at, but I don’t know much.

Change the logo to “neworderontour” for the duration of the tour

Get in touch with the band PA, ring them up, and ask for an interview, or some promos, or something. Its no harm to have some contact with the group and label. Why not ask them for official recognition? Doubtless warner will make some heap of shit flash site to flog the album though.

Ahem. Change the name that everyone knows? Are you a WIM spy or something? This isn't a Warsaw situation, so changing the site name now when it is so well-known would be rather counter-productive wouldn't it? We had a discussion on ads some time ago - the consensus was a very big no. Can't see how that would change. The site runs now thanks to contributions from the Salvation Members - selling its soul to the corporate devil wouldn't be in fitting with the Community of NOOL. As for the band PA aspect - it's already ongoing, and has been for some time. This site isn't going to become an official one though, not while the Sultan of Bling keeps slipping Hooky a fiver here and there for used plectrums!

Warner will probably make some promotional site, you are right. No reason why they shouldn't.

You could keep the New Order On Line URL, and have another (shorter, for getting more new hits) URL. Both could direct to the same site.

Id have no problem with a few adverts either, cant see any reason against them.

these new words need to be used so they can get in the dictionary someday...

new words have to get started somehow or the dictionary sales will drop off and publishers will go unsolvant... nobody will need to buy new copies because language will have become stagnantive...

*Uhm, actually the problem of the site view is that is based on absolute sizes. Indeed I have 800x600 resolution and sometimes I'm forced to scroll to the right to read a whole text. It looks alright on 1024x768, but I much prefer 800x600 as it's more relaxing for my sight if I stay hours in front of the monitor... Maybe the problem could be solved by using it on relative sizes, using percentage instead of pixels.

I would like to see a page dedicated to the EQUIPMENT that new order has used throughout their career.

It would be interesting to know what types of synths, drum-machines, programming equipment, guitars, basses, etc..that they used on every single album.

I have always wanted to know what keyboards/synths they used during certain albums, like Technique or Substance.

We need an extensive page dedicated to their equipment, that is a must!

I'm not sure about that... ;) Anyway "reconstruction" could have been OK since "construction" exists... Examples: "site under construction" "construction time again" so why not "reconstruction"? The forums seem a lot slower now after re-jigging - anyone else notice that?
