Hi,

this is my first post here, yay! I was introduced to new order a year or two ago with the release of International. Obviously I'd heard Blue Monday before but I didn't really know anything else about the band. (btw. I was born in 1980, so I kind of missed the 80's as a period of conscious music listening :)). So, after getting International, and being totally blown away with this music, I got all NO stuff I could find (and a bunch of other classic '80's stuff too). NO are now definitely one of my favourite bands (probably second favourite after Underworld) although I'm still undecided on the new album.

In january this year, I graduated from artschool with a degree in audiovisual design and one of my final projects was a fan-video for the NO track Primitive Notion. You can check it out on my website www.sputnikkproductions.com (go to the graphics section, then click on the primitive notion link) btw It's not the complete album version of the track, I cut it down to single-length (just under four minutes).

I'd be interested what other NO fans think of it. (if I may say so myself, it's better than the Krafty video ;) Even though I can't afford such fancy camera work)

Pity, I would have liked to have watched it but Quicktime messed my p.c. up something chronic, had to get rid of it.

VERY NICE! Respect!

Sputnikk productions? :skeptic:

yep, that's what it's called :) Sputnikk was a name I used when posting my music on the web, then I decided to use it for my graphics work to so I added the "productions" part.

Very cool! I like it!

Great song, too.

Yeah, I enjoyed that, and yup, I agree with you: it is a lot better than the Krafty vid! :)

l8rs,

What's the name of the band in the video? Maybe a pop group can steal the name and become superstars. ;)

BTW GREAT video! :thumb:

Very good job! I don't know why the audio is not playing well here in my computer... Can I ask what were your influences for the video? Not sure but maybe a bit of Eveverybody's Fool from Evanescence?

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I really had any direct influences for this video. I don't know the video you mention either. Don't know why the audio isn't working right for you, anyone else having problems with it?

I've never tired of listening to Primitive Notion. I know we say it about many different album tracks, but this really shoulf have been a single - the third one from Get Ready, filling the gap betwen 60 MPH and Here To Stay. John Peel used to spin Primitive Notion on his show at the time Get Ready came out, and to me it was the obvious one to release, as all the New Order ingredients are there, plus it really rocks.

FANTASTIC WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm not one to easily give out compliments... I am VERY impressed by what you've done, and not only by the video itself, but also by your editing of the audio which was perfectly done... just as if you had the master tracks to work with.

Who's the girl slapping you in the video? :)

How long did it take to make that video? A lot of work in there...

Cheers, sir. :thumb:

Well, I'm a little concerned, as I'm... Spotnick :D

Well, I'm amazed.

This is seriously a good video... could have been an actual New Order video... sure thing is, it's better than Krafty!

Type of thing I'd show the band for a chance to direct the next video :p

I'd love to have the permission to put this one online btw...

Its good. It makes more sense than some of NO's real videos. Some Here To Stay and/or 24HPP influences, or are they coincidental? (the walking down the coridor lipsyncing and the bathroom)

ah i saw this when you posted it on the underworld forum. nice work!

The smoke and the tv monitors at the beginning kinda reminded me of some classic NO videos

Is that you or someone else in the video?

I know someone who looks scarily like them, but they're not Dutch...

quite good, the pacing/flow is right on, in classic music video style, keeps your attention until the end.

the only criticsm i could find would be towards the end when he is on his knees in front of the TV in a special effect "fog"... should have kept it simpler and used real smoke/dry ice.

is that girl slapping you in the middle a reference to the Bizarre Love Triangle video?

the song edit is tight!

thanks all for the nice words :) Answers to questions:

it's not me in the video, but an actor friend of mine, and the girl was a friend of his again. I wrote, directed and cut the video, but you wouldn't find me on the other side of the lens.

as for influences from various video's mentioned: as I said earlier, I don't recally having conscious influences from other video's, but of course one can never rule out being influenced by things we see. :) I also don't really know any other NO video's except for Crystal and Here To Stay so any resemblance to earlier NO video's is purely coincidental.

About the special effects at the end: I agree it doesn't look too great, I didn't really have much time to do that so I kind of rushed something in there. Might polish that up a bit sometime.

The audio-edit: well I didn't have access to the master tape :) I actually just cut out the stuff I didn't need in Soundforge. I kept having to cut it shorter because I didn't really have enough video material to fill it all up otherwise. In the end it turned out allright, almost how you could imagine a single version of the track to sound like.

It's hard to say how long it took to make. It took me quite a long time to finalise the idea and script it out so that it made some sense. The actual shoot was about 4 days and then a few weeks for editing and doing the effects.

Well, I'm a little concerned, as I'm... Spotnick

yeah, I noticed that. Hope it's not a problem ;)

I'd love to have the permission to put this one online btw...

you mean on this site? I guess that should be ok, but I think I'm still going to do some fine tuning to the video so maybe wait a little bit until I'm done with it.

I'd be nice to have the video in full screen as well in Windows Media format, if possible, or even in AVI/DiVX format. I'm not such a fan of QuickTime...

The only critic I may have is that I was a bit disappointed that you had to cut the last verse of the song ("I have a message that I need to send, it's coming to you straight from a friend, I wanted to see what's inside of my heart, I want it to be like it was at the start"). I think it would have been the perfect ending to the video.. but if you hadn't enough video material, I won't blame you for that! ;)

By the way, Primitive Notion is, in my book, one of the absolute best songs New Order have recorded EVER !!!!!!

It's a total shame they didn't release this as a single, and even more shameful they never played it live.

I think I'm gonna start a petition right away to force them to play this fantastic musical treasure!!!!!!!!!!

WE WANT PRIMITIVE NOTION !!!!!

Send your video to the band or the band's management. Would definitely increase the chances to get a decent NO video in the future. It's way better than the Krafty vid.

Primitive Notion and Dream Attack are some of my favourite songs ever as a fan, but I don't think they really fit to be released as single... I mean they seem to be not that radio/non-fan friendly IMHO.

I like QT better than WMA reallly, but I might do an AVI or DivX. Gotta look into that...

yes, I was kinda sad to have to cut that too, but it was as you say; I didn't have any material left to make up a good sequence for that. Ah well...

I was thinking about this one too. I thought the video was quite good, the lad who created it did a good job. A worthy inclusion for the forthcoming DVD? I seem too recall the video for SOTN was put together by a fan or fans.

Hi, well I'm back :) Actually I'm putting together a dvd with all my recent works including this video. So I do have a final version of this now. So if you want a high quality/dvd version of it, let me know. I'm moving homes at the moment though so it might take a few weeks for me to get my act together.
