Lads, it was very exciting to see that 'Kangaroo Jack, G'day USA' had finally seen a worldwide cinema release.

I hope that in this follow-up to the first installment, simply entitled 'Kangaroo Jack', the story writers (or infinite quantity of monkeys operating overwhelmingly vast amounts of typewriters) have somehow managed to crowbar in a scene in which a flying walrus knocks over Tom Hanks into the sea.

Myself and a Waltons type craft filled with a bevy of bristling farm animals are simply chopping at the bit for this one!

Bloc Party are quality. Their album 'Silent Alarm' has a bunch of great tracks on it. Its the drumming that does it ! very UPs. Can't stop playing it. Highly recommended.

Interesting anecdote, H - the word Kangaroo allegedly stems from an aboriginal word meaning "Don't know". The story goes that an European explorer asked an aboriginal tracker what the name of the bouncing mammals was. The young aboriginal chap wisely replied "kanguru", meaning "I don't know (what the flip you're on about)"

If we extend this translation to the aforementioned 'film', you get the true title: "You don't know Jack". Appropriate, don't you think? CTB

For you stats geeks out there, the average is now heading towards a more satisfactory 75% after starting out closer to 60%, as prescribed by doomsayers Muffy, Ferguson, Wells and co. Generally, media outside of the UK has been kinder in its reviews.

I suppose once the US reviews roll in, it could go higher still.

But is this really an 80% record, placing it in the lofty critically acclaimed company of Technique and Low-life?

Not everyone is such a big fan of Technique, DC.

And I foresee that your response will contain some reference to irony.

Some cheeky recrimination for my GIAUE comments I see, how ironic. But whereas I was advising my personal point of view on GIAUE, here I can more safely say that critics were fairly unanimous in their commendations of Technique. I appreciate there are some that don't see the beauty in this album, there are some that don't find beauty in a freshly made hamburger either.

Well, DC, my current feeling about Technique is that it's way too cheerful, among other faults.

Whatever you do DC, don't admit to P that you have ever seen 'The Ringpull' horror suspense movie.

He will likely attempt to embarrass you out of the state by bringing it up over a light meal between friends, with P gatecrashing the entertainment wearing a light brown overcoat, drenched with rain and clenching a legal paper .

As I think I tried to say, or planned to say, before this subject area became clouded by extraneous issues, it seems to me that achieving that sort of melancholic effect is more difficult and therefore more valuable than the cheerful mode. This would appear to be at variance with what is said about acting: "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."

I don't like subtitles and I prefer to have a better understanding of the social context than I do with European films.

I don't know if you want this score: 3/10 by Dutch major newspaper (Volkskrant) review. Reviewer indicated Technique was their best album. WFTSC more or less sucked (not my words). Morrissey got a 7/10 in same review for the DVD or CD (I forgot, sorry) that he released.

Got the new Uncut on Friday, it has Queen on the cover, great read as always and the cd is'nt too bad, songs by Blood Meridian, LCD Soundsystem, Mercury Rev, The Magnetic Fields and M83 being the highlights for me.

I can confirm that Who Magazine gave it 3 and a half out of 5.

It's something about the New Order album being based on episode 7G03 of The Simpsons: Homer's Odyssey. Sounds a little crazy but I'll tell ya, Patsy really knows his Duff and it's got legs.

It wasn't just me, BL. Big also contributed a great deal.

No, I never studied either one, but the title of the album and the line "It's been ten long years since I've been home" really seemed like references to The Odyssey.

It grew from there.

Ronaldo, if you read through the reviews you mentioned above, try and estimate what percentage the reviewer would have given had there been a score. Try and be objective and I'll include it. I've already done this with several other scoreless reviews.

yeah, i guess so. the price on the cover is only listed in u.s. and canadian dollars. i've never heard of them prior to this issue.

the issue has interviews with superfurry animals, new order, and beck, but they decided to give the cover to sfa because they had more access to them and "beck and new order are on enough covers as it is." enough covers? there's only been the nme cover thus far, right? (ian curtis covers aside)

Foud some other reviews in Oz mags J Mag & Ralph. I can't remember the scores as I ddin't go buy them.

I'll see what I can do about estimating those other scores.

Just got the first issue of Tripple J's "J Mag" today, they gave it 3 out of 5. I noticed that they said WFTSC is their fifth album??? They need to pick their game up. Although i have to say that "J Mag" is a welcome alternative from "Rolling Stone". Good luck to them.

New Order have nothing to regret. If they'd broken up when Ian Curtis died, they'd still be remembered as Joy Division. If they'd broken up after the 1982 single "Temptation," they'd be remembered for the most achingly emotional seven-and-a-half-minute New Wave disco twelve-inch of all time. If they'd broken up after Low-life, in 1985, they'd be remembered for the most influential electro-vampire post-punk limp-wristed goth-twit album of the Eighties. But they didn't break up. They just keep making brilliant new records and inspiring brilliant new bands, such as the Killers, Bloc Party and Interpol. They took a break in the 1990s, cleansing their systems of toxic chemicals and even fuglier side projects. (Revenge? Electronic? Monaco? Jesus!) If their 2001 Get Ready was a toe-dip return, Waiting for the Sirens' Call is their best since Technique, taking the "Blue Monday" beat into new wacked-out realms.

Bernard Sumner still sings and strums with his boyish air of distractable pique, and he writes some of the most genius crap lyrics around ("The world is a beautiful place/With mountains, lakes and the human race"). His secret is his sincerity, the way he whoops and yelps through blood-curdling poetry that a more clever singer would shame himself trying to play straight. But he'd be nowhere without Peter Hook, the Keith Richards of the bass, and drummer/pinup boy Stephen Morris. They outdo themselves with the sleek pop uplift of "Krafty," the robot clank of "I Told You So," the moody shimmer of "Turn" and the towering title track. Every song is great, except the one called "Dracula's Castle." What more could a fan ask?

Bernard Sumner still sings and strums with his boyish air of distractable pique, and he writes some of the most genius crap lyrics around ("The world is a beautiful place/With mountains, lakes and the human race"). His secret is his sincerity, the way he whoops and yelps through blood-curdling poetry that a more clever singer would shame himself trying to play straight. But he'd be nowhere without Peter Hook, the Keith Richards of the bass, and drummer/pinup boy Stephen Morris. They outdo themselves with the sleek pop uplift of "Krafty," the robot clank of "I Told You So," the moody shimmer of "Turn" and the towering title track. Every song is great, except the one called "Dracula's Castle." What more could a fan ask?

The minimalist review of WFTSC included a B+ score.

As for the previously provided Rollign Stone review, it appears in the May 5, 2005 Rolling Stone also on newstands. The review is nice, three column wide, half a page with photo and larger than average type. Really nice looking write up.
