New Order V 808 State

I didn't think much of it (and the Blue Monday version). There's not much (if any) of the original NO samples in it, it just sounds like 808 State tried to do their own cover versions of Confusion/Blue Monday and failed miserably. It's all very Acid House-y so sounds pretty dated by today's standards; lots of wayward congas and 303s. I could swear they never got the samples to sound "in tune" as well. Apparently they were done in the early nineties but the band shelved them until a year or two ago.
To be honest it's a mystery to me why they "unshelved" them.

Well, I like them... If you don't like acid house, then maybe this isn't your cup of tea...
And, yes, they are cover versions, not remixes (as stated on the sleeve)...
Originally, the mixes were intended for the Hacienda "So Hot" night, but later used at gigs so as to lighten the mood after a heavy acid house set.
They aren't on the album, "Prebuild", because they didn't fit in with the rest of the tracks. It was Autechre (Sean & Rob) and Richard James (Aphex Twin) that insisted they get a release.
So, in short, it's a fun, happy record, not to be taken too seriously, nor as a final polished product.

BTW, the promo CD's that are regularly listed on eBay (with the same description, including a whole load of question marks), are bootlegs...
There isn't a promo CD single of the 808 State "Blue Monday" release, just a limited number of white label 12"'s.
