Most 'NEWorder' moment on the new album — Forum Archive

Most of us have our copies for a few weeks now - or have heard it plenty of times, so what is your 'most No' moment on the album?

For me it's in Guilt is a Useless Emotion - the instrumental break after the second chorus (starts about 2mins 50sec) - Hookys bass storms over the top of a typically peculiar synth sound with enough percussion sounds to even keep me interested - then it changes & changes & changes - but somehow stays the same - like all the best NO songs. :music:

(I'm looking forward to doing my 'mad uncle' dancing to this at niteclubs)

Anyone else want to share their favourites?

I like the intro to MN&D, the synth bass that kick in sound great load, I reckon it'll be a stormer live, if the sound crew get there act together and make sure it's punchy, in a similar vain, I always thought the drums could do with being a but punchier when they kick in on crystal.

It's the bit after the second chorus in the title track that gets me - where the synth comes in over Hooky's fantastic bassline. That's a great NO moment.

The instrumental break in 'Hey now' and the whole of the title track. The coda to 'Who's Joe' is excellent as well.

Not on the album, as such, but Hooky's bass at the end of Mac Quayle's "Guilt", the way he suddenly winds the song down. Class.

When Hooky comes in at WFTSC. First time I heard it it brought tears to my eyes since the previous two songs are not very NOish.

I agree completely; I tend to forget that New Order has always used fairly unorthodox synthesizer sounds and they always seem to use them to really great effect.

I now think that TURN should definitly be released as a single in the U.K... all of those living there seem to fall in love with that song completely.

It seems to be a British phenom, for some reason. On this side of the pond, most people will like it but won'T fall completely for it. And I don't think it has any real potential for commercial radio in North America, whereas a song like Hey Now What You Doing might cut it. :)

The most New Order-ish moment on the album is "Turn" for me. That whole song is the New Order dynamic working in perfect sync. The instruments just flow and sound perfect together creating that weird 'melanchloic beauty' all the greatest NO tracks have. I have a feeling this is the type of song the band are constantly whining about "sounding too much like New Order" in the studio but bloody hell they should put those concerns to one side and make some more like this one!

You could pretty much take "Turn" and drop it anywhere in the running order of Technique and it would not sound out of place IMO. I, and I'm sure many others here, consider Technique as a benchmark for the best of New Order for the sound and feelings they are best at creating.

I like that little stutter step towards the end of Krafty, just the tiniest of pauses that locks down the whole thing.

The NO moments of all time have to be:

weeeeeeeooooo, boom, boom, boom, chick from Blue Monday (you know the bit I mean)
Hooky's last two rounds on the 12" Perfect Kiss. As someone said eleswhere "storming over" the rest of the track.

Working Overtime, it seems most New Order LPs have a very :wtf: moment at the end (Avalanche, Every Little Counts, Run Wild). This just happens to be one of the better ones.

The intro to Draculas Castle. While Im not a big fan of the song I think the start is brilliant. It just kinda builds up with guitar, synth and bass. Sheer class.

We're talking different carats of gold here really and it all comes down to personal opinion. Low-life and Technique are on equal footing pretty much but the latter is very summery and consistent (hardly a duff track) so it just edges out the former for me. As for Movement, erm.... I'm refraining from saying it's absolute bollocks but let's be honest, even for the fan majority it's not the most popular NO album. In "Favourite Album Polls" it regularly comes either last or second last. Polls are not gospel of course but they obviously reflect a chunk of popular opinion.

Movement is Joy Division minus the best bits (for obvious reasons) with a few experimental synth doodles that attempt to masquerade as songs (and fail). I was very interested when Bernard mentioned in a '98 interview that he didn't even own a copy of Movement nor could remember the songs :shrug: Dreams Never End was the one spark of brilliance on that album. That said, I have alot of sympathy for the band with that record so it's hard to pan it completely, they must've been in a very strange place post-Ian with Joy Division so comprehensively gone.

Good point - as ive mentioned before - i always look forward to those moments listening to a new NO album where you go "??? where did THAT come from?"
