What's the deal? You guys don't like Brutal? It's one of thier best tracks. When I first heard this track I though "Oh my Goodness!! They're BACK!!!!" Barney and Hookey's guitars absolutely rock on this tune!
Why wasn't this released as a single, instead of being put on some crappy soundtrack album? No one gives a damn about the rest of "The Beach's" music. Brutal is the only thing on that OST that doesn't suck.

I do like Brutal a lot. It's not my favorite song, but all of the elements of a good New Order song are there. The lyrics aren't bad and Barney sings well on the song. Both the bass and the guitars sound well. The real test of the song would be how it sounds live, but it sounds good on record.
don't like it that much. its more like an electronic track done by new order, which is what it probably is.

Brutal was a great comeback song by the band as a whole, absent since 1993. There's an excellent live performance of the song on the 511 DVD.

Don't mind Brutal but don't care much for the rest of your statement. UNKLE's track is a gem and anything with Underworld and Leftfield on it gets my vote.

Thats just what I thought of when I saw blue-eyed's post. Brutal is great on 511 & it shows how well it fits into the NO catalogue - its a great song IMO
Beofre it first came out there was an mp3 floating about that was faster and better than the one on the soundtrack. Can anyone else confirm this? I don't have it anymore.
i believe facseven and i talked about this song being pretty damn good on monday. i personally loved this song, it being the first new order song in years, i instantly loved it. the rest of the soundtrack from what i remember was pretty good too. i should give it another listen this weekend. did anyone actually watch the movie?

I recall that one circulating through the Ceremony list. I thought it was just a poorly synchronised mp3 that made it sound different rather than it being an alternate recording?

BRUTAL was great to hear at the time.I also enjoyed the one by UNDERWORLD -was it called 8 BALL...Today............great song.I had to buy the SOUNDTRACK ALBUM.The film wasn't too good though and NEW ORDER can hardly be heard on it!
To be brutally honest, it was one of these fad songs for me. Liked it to start with, soon tired of it. By the time they started playing it live I had no wish to listen to it, it became the beer break song in 2002!
now, I still can find the version that is NOT the on the soundtrack, I remember it being even better, it was much faster if my memory's correct. BTW Anyone having a spare copy of the Brutal promo CDR. Never managed to find one. If you have the original, I could trade for an Israeli promo of Krafty which I just happened to buy on Ebay...
The Beach isn't that good at all... very average tune.
Particularly when you compare it with other tracks on the soundtrack. Underworld, Leftfield, Orbital etc. all those artists contributed much better tracks than Brutal. 
I don't hate it, but I doubt I'd be too bothered if I didn't hear it again.

Agreed; I thought the whole soundtrack was great (except that Blur tune). As for my opinion on Brutal, I also think it's very underrated.
I remember when I first heard Brutal, I thought it was incredible. I was like, what the hell happened between this & Get Ready? It almost makes me want to believe it was once an Electronic song (I still stand on my opinion that Johnny Marr should have been New Order's new guitar player). Anyway, I love it. Lyrics, guitars, drumming, the soft synth. Reminds me of something exotic and on a rainy day, like in a desert. Very refreshing, and never seems to grow dull to me.

Yeah, it's a pretty good NO song, but it sounds too much like Electronic's "Breakdown" to me. The Indian string synths are a nice touch. Solid, but not really a gem.

yeah...i actually liked that version, even though it was just a bad mp3 of sorts. too bad they didn't try playing it faster live.

Brutal is nothing special. It's not a really bad song per se, but I don't really see how anyone could get so fired up about it. They nervously produced it with the bloke from Faithless didn't they? It wasn't really the return from New Order I was expecting; it sounded more like a missing track from the "Twisted Tenderness" sessions. You could probably drop it anywhere on TT, credit Hooky with a bit of bass noodling and you'd have a reasonable Electronic album track. But New Order? Nah, no way. There's no spark.
I also disagree with "crappy soundtrack album" entirely and "no one gives a damn about the rest". Bollocks mate. The Beach is about the only O.S.T. (bar Trainspotting and Lost In Translation) I regularly come back to, and it's not for Brutal. That soundtrack introduced me to UNKLE (Lonely Soul), cemented my interest in Underworld (8 Ball), Moby (Porcelain) and the opening Leftfield "Snakeblood" was one of the best tracks I'd heard in years. Fucking cool electronica, no question. The atmosphere Leftfield achieved on that track is nothing short of amazingly nervous and urgent; great club track. I bought the O.S.T. for Brutal, but ironically it ended up being one of the least listened to tracks. Dario G's contribution was also a nice ambient/world music melody, cool track. I still think Brutal sounds kinda tepid Alt. Rock compared to the other Beach tracks which sound genuinely... erm, good!
Just my two cents of course, but The Beach is one of the best soundtracks out there.

Do you and brade27 mean the BBC Radio One demo? It's a low quality version that is faster. I think I have it somewhere.

Johnny is alright but the Smiths put me to bed. 
It's a good song, but they should re-record it with Phil, the version they play live with his guitar is so better...

There was, however, an official Warners CDR that came with a different version of Brutal (which has other songs on it, so it isn't the same as the 'Brutal' CDR) - dunno whether it's the same version as the BBC Radio One demo, or not?
At some point, I'll have to check the differences between the one on the CDR and the soundtrack, but first of all, I've got to find the CDR! :D

The version I have isn't very good. It's not comparable to the Let's Go demo, but it is noticeably lower in terms of a bitrate, even though on Lame it's set at 128. I thought I recall getting this version awhile back on Dreams Never End site. I could look for it among all my cds and rip it if you like.

tis exactly the same as the uk promo but with israeli sticker on it,would be very surprised if someone traded a copy of brutal for it!

Unfortunately, I tried ripping the track off one of my cd-r's that I burned from a different, older computer and it won't read it! 
But, it play fine in a walkman. 
What I will do later this week is attempt to rip it at work and see if I can garner any success.
I remember hearing it for the first time on a listening post in HMV Shibuya, Tokyo sometime in early 2001 and being mega dissapointed. It inspired my one and only ever post on what I assume must have been the "Ceremony" noticeboard where I gave it both barells and suggested they call it quits and split for good! The more things change.....
Great soundtrack album, and I thought Brutal was a fine song on it. Came as a bit of a relief because I didn't think much of Republic at all.
Can't see the Electronic link to be honest - don't think it sounds like TT at all. It's a lot sparser
