Ok I just have to see if anyone else feels the same way as I do about this song.

I love it, I literally played it like 7 times in a row, it's so depressingly beautiful in it's gutiar riffs and low lyrics.

Does anyone else absolutely adore this song also, and do NO play it in concert, as if it's missing, I'll be a bit dissapointed frankly. :(

Yes, they played it nearly on every set of their Grrready tour...

Thus, you should hear it in Australia too!

Which version? The original 7" is my favourite NO song ever, the re-recorded 12" version (included on Substance) is very poor in comparison.

The current live version is the same as all live versions have been (bar that famous Kilkenny version) since the year dot. A cross between the two recorded sizes.

To be blunt, my favourite New Order song EVER. Sooperb song, and absolutely brilliant live with everyone going mental to it. Huge crowd pleaser. We hassled Barney to no end in America asking him to play said song, even to the point where we got bought a Union Jack and scribed CEREMONY across it to hold up at gigs. Thankfully, it's back in the set now. Beggars belief as why they left it out in the first instance. Barney asked us in the States, "Well what can we drop to include it?" to which I answered "ANYTHING!" then re-thought and added, "except Temptation".

The original version is my favourite too. The greatest song in the history of the world, ever! :smoking:

Being able to hear the original on your CD has certainly raised my estimation of the song, Muffster.

There is only one real version, the original and always the best. That bassline, that opening riff, the power surge when the barre chord opens......

The original version is absolute quality...nearly brings a tear to my eye every time.

When I bought my first record player with my own dosh, this was the 1st tune that rocked our suburban neighbourhood.

I like both versions (original and substance) but the drums on the Substance version sound better to me.

We must be alone on this as I prefer the Substance version as well. Better guitars and a bit rockier. The original is still cracking though. Fantastic live as well.

Well...not sure if Ceremony has overtaken Temptation or the perfect kiss as either of my two favorite songs...but it is getting very heavy rotation around my place...the original is loads better (in my opinion)

On headphones, Hannet's production on the drums really shines (substance version).

 me and my ears agree!!!

Yea agree this song is scandalously good!

apart from being a great song throughout the ending is just so awesomely powerful.

The ending lines "Watching forever..." with that melancholy guitar are just far far far to good :)

Certainly is one of their best ever! The original, of course. Makes me remember i was driving in my car once , in the middle of the night, on a long straight narrow road. There were trees at both sides of the road, a dense fog and asll i could think of was; avenues all lined with trees... Brilliant moment, although i nearly crashed.:D: But YES: the best ever!

The original Ceremony - would definately be in my Top 10 - that's how good it is;)

The original is simply awesome!!! Thank God the neighbors next door aren't home cause the song is now shaking the floors and walls (along with my spine).

I love the JD version on Still overall, but all three rank quite highly. I must say, however, because of its rough soudn the original NO take sounds like a demo while the 12 inch on subs sounds much more complete, I guess Gillian brought a little more guitar to it so Barney could focus on singing (He seems to lose the melody at a few points on the original)

I love Ceremony. Second only to We All Stand in my favourites. It's spiritual.

Yep , me too in fervent support of the first (gold-sleeve seven inch, green-sleeve twelve) version of this magnificent song. Great guitar sound especially.

Magnificent song.

There are later pressings existing of the green sleeve that are the re-recorded version and pressings of the blue & white sleeve that are the original version, just to confuse it even more. But these are less common. Plus there's a 12" pressing with a gold sleeve (IT) ala the UK 7" which may have either version.

The groove notations on the inner vinyl indicate the version.. eg It says "Watching love grow forever" or "This is why events unnerve me", etc.

I'd better go before I disappear up my own ass.

"Heaven knows its got to be this time"

Did I quote that right?

Wow, nice to see I'm not alone on this one, and FANTASTIC news that they should play it in Australia.

This looks like it's going to be the best concert this world has ever seen! ;)

Don't kill me, but i prefer the remixed substance version. I can't help it, this was the first version i heard and therefore in my mind its the original. Does anyone understand? no? ok.

This may come as a surprise Major, but I know what you mean mate, that was the first version I heard of it as well, but after hearing the original my mind was changed instantly;) Temptation is my fave song ever - and I still cannot decide which version I prefer - the original 12" or the Substance mix!!!!

Once again, i prefer the substance mix. The version i hear first is usually the one i love.

I just listened to the original version of ceremony (the green 12" with the gold writing), the problem i have with it is the echo on the vocal and the "lets put 90% of the guitar in the left speaker" production.

You should also check out Ian McCulloch guesting on Ceremony at G Mex 1987. Awesome.

I thought McCulloch ruined it, it was embarrassing ! He played it live at some of his solo shows as well, his interpretation was "interesting" to say the least.

I was at that gig too! Mind you, being once a huge Bunnymen fan as well, I kind of didn't let it bother me that much instead of screaming "Sacrilege!" and bottling him off stage which I'm sure some Orderphiles would have done given half the chance! Good old Mac the Mouth - where's he gone to these days? He's had more comebacks than I care to remember.....

Glad to see another Bunnymen fan. Pity they reformed really, it hasn't been the same despite a half decent comebcak album in Evergreen. They have some gigs coming up in February I think, which will be worth seeing just for nostalgia value. They were unbeatable around 84 IMHO.

Anyone know where I can download NO's original version? Coz the version on Substance don't do the music justice.

The original version is the finest piece of music ever laid down by the band. They never again matched the intensity of beauty and emotion that is present on that record.

How well do you think it cuts it live ?

especially lately, as it was included on the playlist for the Grrrready tour...
