I read today that it's 15 years to the day that World In Motion was at number one in the UK singles charts (and our hearts) - which is timed neatly as a german national side are crowned champions of europe again. this allows me to expound a theory/correllation... everytime the official england single has reached number one the squad has been put out of the competition by the same nation: 'back home' 1970 - england 2 w germany 3 'world in motion' 1990 - england lose on penalties to w germany 'three lions' 1996 - england lose on penalties to germany (have I missed anything to disprove this link or is it ironclad?)

I'd just like to remember the time that WIM came out and those halcyon days of italia90 blasting the track repeatedly out of my bedroom window to all the victory pissed passers-by (pre-semifinal). A moment when all seemed right in the world - football and the order collided and finally they would be recognised as the creators of the greatest record in the world. And it was the first rap worth learning!

(of course, as football songs go the Del Amitri track is a close runner up. a single left on the dining table of every football widow in scotland : "I'm just off to france to get pissed - I won't be long love")

here's to no more number ones...

Are these the best opening lines of any song?

Three Lions: I think it's bad news for the English game We're not creative enough, and we're not positive enough
