JJ72

Don't know if anyone's mentioned these fellas before, but I caught them on the ole Craig Kilborn show (Conan was a repeat), they're alright. The lead singer's voice is a little grating, but they've got a good sound. They also love JD, which is always a bonus. Anyways, there's a lot of hype around them in the indie circuit, which is why I decided to see. Should I believe the hype? comments, opinions welcome on this one

i saw them perform at the Robbie Williams concert in Cologne before NewOrder and Ash and i must say they really got on my nerves...the singer sounds a bit too much like a Thom Yorke sound-a-like...

i still prefer My Bloody Valentine...;)

Mmm...mmm.... My Bloody Valentine - great band but even greater when their original singer Dave Conway was with them - they were absolutely MENTAL then - especially Colm, the drummer, with his bowlhead haircut thrashing all over the place as he played.....hilarious to watch!!!!!

I'd never heard of them until i my mate dragged my to the tent they were playing in at Leeds 2000. Some people walked out complaining that the singer sounded like a girl. Me? I was speechless. What a performance.

Are JJ72 in the same league as the truly wretched Muse? Never heard JJ72 but I've heard - and seen - Muse at Glastonbury once - they were utterly hideous! Prog-rock gone operatic ballistic bananas!!

tabsy dear, thanks for giving me the chance to participate in one of my favourite activities; rubbishing shite bands. i can not resist this opportunity for they is indeed gubbins of the highest order. dont let yourself be reeled in by the hype surrounding these mouthy gets and the fit (my twins a model u know)bassist; for all their fighting talk this lot turned out to be so fucking run-of-the-mill its untrue. i`m always prepared to give fellow believers a chance so i listened intently to their album but its disappointing boring, studiously intense,turgid, earnest, angst rock. the no/jd fixation is their only redeeming feature (their debut lps cover is a homage to the no substance cover and they do warsaw in their (okish)live set); other than that they count nirvana, smashing pumpkins and msp as their influences; that tells u all u need to know about them really.

Well, I did say I wanted honesty....

I thought the song they performed was all right, I'd have to hear more before I decide.

They want to sound like their heroes, but take it just a bit too far. The singer needs an op to release his nads I think ! Don't believe the hype ! They are just another in the long list of NME-hyped bands that were ultimately shit. remember all the fuss about Gay Dad ? There's no originality there from what I've heard.

At any rate, I think bands that are usually touted as "the next big thing" last about an album or two, then fade away into one-hit wonder band. At least they like JD.

actually tabs i have a question for ya...concerning the blue oyster cult..i`ve come across some of their albums on special offer, but i dunno which ones to purchase..

You know, VG, it's been so long since I listened to the Cult (Blue oyster), that I don't know what to recommend......plus I've never been a fan of theirs, I was just f-ing around with that old signature of mine. Sorry to upset the Blue Oyster contingent of the board.

The vocalist reminds me of Brian Molko from Placebo, and while I agree that they are not all they're cracked up to be Tabsy, I would'nt go quite as far as VG and her stinging critisism. They're unoffensive, and definitely not groundbreaking, but the album is ok, if not stunning. If you're looking for something a little more interesting I suggest you get the Doves album, Lost Souls. Now that's what I call quite good!

The Doves album is not just quite good,it's f*****g brilliant! Did you know there are a couple of New Order connections with the Doves as well?

1:Doves used to be called Sub Sub in a previous life,and they were signed to Rob Gretton's record label,Rob's Records.

2:I'm not sure about this one but i think it's right that Doves did the Drums and Percussion on Electronic's Twisted Tenderness album.

By the way i haven't heard the Twisted Tenderness album yet,is it worth getting?

Doves are on tour in the UK around May / June time, to coincide with the second album. I'm prepared to be alone in liking JJ72, but each and every one of you should buy / steal / copy the Doves album if it's the last thing you ever do.

I wasn't overimpressed with it to be honest. Only heard it once though, so maybe repeat plays will make it happen.

Like i said earlier I have never heard any stuff by JJ72 properly to form an opinion of them but if they have been lumped in with bands as awful as Muse, Placebo and even the wretched Mansun (yeuch!), then to me that isn't much of a recommendation then, sorry. :D

Placebo - wow there's another truly dire piss poor excuse for a rock band. Brian Moloko - what a gobshite. Wonder where they are now? Hopefully down the dumper. Won't be holdin' my breath for their comeback.

Your not wrong there, i discovered Doves from a gig at the Southern in chorlton just after Rob Gretton died, they had projections of him at the side of the stage - really young pics of him. The gig was fantastic - badly drawn boy sang on the last two tracks, one of the best gigs i've been to. Lost Souls is an amazing album, one of those records that you never tire of. According to the various different sources the new album is gonna be one of the albums of the year(again!).

JJ72 are ok. Inoffensive enough, October Swimmer was a reasonable effort. There's a lot more offensive bands out there, such as the Manics for example.

I do admit I don't mind a couple of Placebos tunes either. BM is a twat though.

I thought the DOves were a little over rated to be honest. It'll be interesting to see what their new albums like now they've got a bit of fame. That track they did with Barney; "This time I'm not wrong" was class though.

bruise pristine & nancy boy were fine singles. the jj72 album is ok in my book too. but then so is the doves lost souls.

I have the Doves album, but I haven't listened to it much since I got it. I realize that smacks of blasphemy after the turn this thread has taken, but I don't plan on parting with it anytime soon, if only for Catch The Sun

I have got to agree with Marco on this one.:DSaw them to at the R.Williams one, my god ,they were absolute crap!! Nice that they are JD fans , but imo that is no guarantee to make good music yourself

yes they are crap..and hypocrites aswell.slagged off u2 over and over in the papers but jumped at the chance to support them at slane castle.doves on the pther hand are pretty damn good.seen them live a few times.their singer played bass on the last electronic lp i think

has anyone heard this new band called "haven"? i heard that johnny marr was producing their debut album.barney did a song called "this time i'm not wrong" with sub sub a few years ago,its a good rocky tune
