I know that Barney was on hard shit like Acid and Coke and had a drinking problem around Technique era. Did the other band member's endulged a little in their hay day? Have they stopped?
Barney says he got help from the drinking but when i see him drinking wine on Canal, I wonder if he is still battling a drinking problem.
Nick you should add this question on FAQ "What were NO's drugs of choice?", I am sure people frequently wondered this.

If you develop addictions (chemical, social or psychological), especially more than one, they can end up being a permanent feature of your life. Barney would have to be careful with the drink for the rest of his life, as theres always the risk of relapse...
Hooky is apparently an alcoholic and no longer drnks, but that doesn't mean he doesn't do anything else 
Gill has probably given up now due to the sick child, steve probably needs something to keep the energy levels up during the gigs, barney

I've got an interview with Steve and Hooky from the TV when they played Big Day Out in Auckland in 2002. Steve and Hooky were both drinking wine and Steve said he now only has the occasional glass as he is "full up".
I heard one theory that Blue Monday is about cocaine. I don't see much of that other than the line (no pun intented) "I still find it so hard to say what I need to say, but I'm quite sure that you'll tell me just how I should feel today"

Uh? He's the one who posted about this on here.. I don't see why I would not mention it? I can probably find the thread he talked about the 80's and the backstage world...

Let's face it, we all know they probably weren't doing a few lines of sherbert dip. New Order are a band renowned for being drugs monsters at one stage or another in their career, I doubt this will shock anyone. Barney's always spoken frequently about his usage and opinions re: Drugs.
Having said I've often wondered where Jonathan S. is these days, he was kind enough to put me up for a night during the Glasgow 2001 gigs and the last time I spoke to him was around about then. He seems to have vanished off all radars which is especially strange as we've just had a big influx of new New Order activity 
would be good to catch up with him at some point.
JS is on my ICQ list... he's still alive... ;)
I talked to him just before T In The Park, he told me he had a discussion with Andy Robinson back then.

I read somewhere that Barney (said from him) wasn't able to be in studio without the colombian substance in his nose... this up to the second Electronic album..

I also think the use of Ecstasy...up until the Electronic recording sessions...Read an article once where Barney recalls himself and the engineer were tripping balls of X during that time and Barney felt his heart palpatating!

I saw it on an electronic website. Cant spot it now! I think Shuggy has something to do with the site.
it was either Echo and the Bunnymen or Pixies or someother band New Order toured the states with in the late 80's who said they had never seen any band do as much cocaine as New Order.

Aye, Barney was featured on a programme called "Compass" back in 1996. It followed a couple of artistes who were prescribed the drug, I think there was a writer and an artist also featured and all given about 15 minutes airtime.
Funnily enough Prozac is just about the only drug I've not had a go of
As for the quote about The Greatful Dead, that was courtesy of Johnny Rotten himself (from when PIL were on tour with New Order & The Sugarcubes in 89)
Best ever story from the heavy days - was when they were doing acid during the recording of PCL, Barney would wear a white coat and carry a whip around in the studio.
I think the story came from an in depth interview in Uncut back in 98. I can't be arsed digging ma cuttings out!!!

Bernard seems very uncomfortable being in spotlight as a "rock star", I don't think it is any surprise that he gets fucked up to go on stage
New Order didnt start to see much money until reportedly about 1987, maybe then they could start to afford cocaine
most drugs do not make you very productive, and certainly the post 1988 Technique to 1995 Raise the Pressure period is not exactly Barney's best and most productive period

Yup! They got very little done in the Balearics apparently, just a couple of drum tracks. They were out partying a lot and very little got recorded. Fine Time was written as a sort-of tribute to the nuts Ibizan club scene filtered through The Hac etc. You have to remember that Technique was part of the last hurrah at Factory - although no-one really knew it at the time.
Incidentally the Mondays went to Nassau in the Bahamas (I think) to record their album whilst they were 'distressed' with drug use i.e Ryder was in rehab after using large amounts of heroin previously and apparently dropped a bottle of metadone going through Ringway airport on the way there! They (mistakenly) believed Shaun, Bez et al would be safer from drugs there but the place was crack cocaine central. There's the infamous story of Wilson getting a call to get his arse out there because Ryder was trying to sell the studio furniture for crack! Because both their album and Republic were so slow in coming together, it affected the viability of Factory ultimately and the label collapsed partly because the albums were so far behind schedule.
Steve was a big-time user and I think they all enjoyed various substances even during the Joy Divison days. Steve was expelled from school several times because of his fondness for cough medicine and glue.
Eventually it takes it toll. It's sad that Hooky now has a drink problem but then so did had ex-wife...

Uhm, can be true, but we should not say this in a general way. This could discourage people who should take it for therapy. Prozac has been a major progress in the cure of many mental diseases. The medicines which were given before were much more dangerous. Actually one of the major mistakes for problems of anxiety etc. is to give only a tranquilizer like Tavor (Lorazepam) and this has depressive effects. Calms you down, but too down, you know what I mean? A good doctor will balance the effects of the tranquilizer with the positive effect of Fluoxetine (Prozac). Fluoxetine is also the main remedy to balance Serotonine which is a natural substance in our brain which decodes the way we feel, also at body level (you'll start to feel pains you actually haven't, up to a panic attack when you think you're gonna die). When you get some kind of trauma or a big deal of stress Serotonine can go out of balance, at that stage your feelings will already be messed up. Fluoxetine, in the right dose, will slowly bring Serotonine to a normal level and bring you back to the normal feelings. Of course if you just use Prozac on your own as a fun drug it can have the wrong effects, but it's usually the best thing you can take when you need something and a doctor follows you.
About the subject, Joy Division and early New Order did a lot of amphetamines. Apparently Ian suffered from the abuse of this drug on his already unstable mind, combined with the prescribed drugs which were also more dangerous than todays medicines. Bernard claimed to have discovered sobriety in 1996 after quitting Prozac. He said riding bycicle was his new drug. Actually when I saw him in 1998 he looked rather sober, apart from the usual glass of wine at the aftershow. But really in 2001 and 2002 it looked like he got back to something a bit stronger. I think he has taken something on this tour, otherwise we wouldn't have had already legendary moments like the Lisbon Krafty and the Ring My Bell SLC in Sweden... you got performances like that in the 80s, but not since they reformed...
