1st time you heard a new order record.

well mine was in the summer of 1982 i taped the top 40 on radio 1,temptation was played;so i was hooked on them ever since.

To me it was the video True Faith played in the spring 1994 within the Great Hits section on MTV. It didn't get me hooked on them because the only reason I paid a closer attention to that particular video was that I recently found out back then that Joy Division in fact carried on as New Order. So I wanted to hear what they sounded and looked like.

To tell the truth after that video I thought of New Order as a kind of the Pet Shop Boys. Moreover, I was unable to believe for a while that band HAD BEEN Joy Divison. No hint whatsoever.

Threw on PCL in winter 2002. Had it on LP. Was big into Joy Division, and, coming from punk rock, was still rather wary of excessive synths. That musical prejudice sounds so silly now, although Depeche Mode are about the only other electro group I listen to, and they can be bit a much here and there.

Anyway, I heard 'Substance' a year later...went back to PCL, fell in love with their music. They are the most consistent group of the last twentyfive years. When I hear a weak NO track, I can forgive them, because they've so many songs that I can listen to almost anytime, no matter what kind of mood I'm in.

Age of Consent, Ceremony, EGG, and Temptation changed how I thought about music just as Transmission, Disorder, Isolation and TwentyFour Hours had.

1986--several girls did a dance routine to blue monday at our junior high school's talent show.

My NO cherry was popped in spring of 84. I went to a local record shop looking some NO. My friend's brother was a dj and had been playing Blue Monday. I went to exam thes guys further. I saw a brilliant album cover of flowers. I thought, let's give it a whirl. When it took it to the counter, the guy behind the counter asked if I had liked NO. I said that it was my first album. He told me to wait and then went back to the record isle. He came back with the Factus 8 ep and Closer from JD. He said, take these and then come back and I'll tell you all about them.

I went home and played all three over and over again. I remeber right off thinking, We All Stand, Leave Me Alone, Age of Consent, Your Silent Face, Mesh, Hurt, Heart and Soul, A Means To An End and Twenty Four Hours were such amazing tracks.

I went back and the guy told me the whole JD/NO story. From there, I bought everything JD and NO. I was 13 at the time, and that music just fit with everything going on around me and in my life. I do recall listening more to JD for the first 2-3 years. My first NO show was in 1986 at Irvine Meadows seeing them with The Fall and Durutti Column. I'm 34 and I'll always be dedicated to NO and JD.

you know i was just thinking about starting a thread like this becuase I'm trying to remember mine and I'm not sure I can. Its a bit like finding out about sex. I know there was a time when I didn't know, and then there was a time when I did but I can't actually remember finding out as such. Exactly the same goes for NO. Let me think about it for a bit.

oops right, just got distracted by those pictures of barney in shorts. okay so my first memeory is of hearing true faith and it the lines 'when i was a very small boy...they're afrraid of what they see' thinking woh is this guy disfigured or something?, and generally been impressed by how sad and moving those lines are(probabvly the first time i heard a non happy pop song) although i couldn't have put it into those words at the time. But this could be any time after it was released, not necessarily 1987. However, its definitely before WIM so I was aged between 6-9. i'm sure Freud would link these formative years to my love of barney's shorts but i disagree. probably.

Early spring '86. I was 14. At my friend Jeromy's house. He lived in the woods. He had just made a greenhouse out of plastic and recycled wood. We hiked out to a defunct quarry, got high, and watched (from afar) some older redneck kids drink beer and dive into the quarry. I remember there was a graffiti portrait of Jimi Hendrix about the size of a VW bug painted on the quarry wall. We went back to his house and he put on the Low Life LP. I was floored. When I heard those Perfect Kiss peeper frogs chirping away, I was forever sold. I had heard the JD/Ian story before hearing NO, but it wasn't until about a year later that I connected the dots between the two. I rode my bike about ten miles that afternoon to a mall record store, and bought the cassette version of LowLife from behind a sliding glass wall in the "import" section. I remember being scared to put it in my pocket, and rode home with the bag wrapped around my handle bars.

It's amazing how as I type this, more and more details of that day, physical and emotional, just keep getting stronger and stronger. The smells, the feel of early spring rotting leaves underfoot, how I had to sqint at the sun bouncing off the quarry wall, the posters of famous revolutionaries on Jeromy's wall, the anxiety from smoking weed, followed by the way those perfect kiss/peeper toad croaks comforted me, riding my bike on the side of a highway and passing a 9 hole golf couse where I was convinced they were aming at me, etc... I only wish I could remember yesterday as well.

not sure about 1st time.but,i already had ceremony and movement when i do remember hearing single 2 'procession' on the radio.i stood in the room open mouthed.i'd never heard.couldnt believe my ears.i'd never heard anything like it before.amazing

Well, I told quite all about it in a different thread but it was in the French forum I reckon...

Way back to late '78, where a now defunct Belgian Legendary broadcast called 'Radio-Cité', aired every week-end from 7.30 AM to 7.30 PM from 21 September'78 until the second week-end of '86 on the national radio,they were playing absolutely everything from the new scene of the time and so a lot of 'An Ideal for Living'EP and then, in '79, 'Unknown Pleasures'straight from its release and then on and on. Personaly, started with 'Unknown Pleasures' and never have stop since. What a souvenir and THRILL.

Third or Fourth Week 1981. It was Ceremony 7". I bought it at Dom van den Bergh in Venlo, Netherlands. I live in Germany near the dutch boarder. This was an advantage those days.

True faith video

The first time I heard New Order was when I lived in Iceland back in 1983. A friends father had gone to New York and taped some of the mix shows on the radio. There was this incredible song called "Confusion" that was mixed into I.O.U. by Freeez. I had that song already, and to hear it mixed with this other song was brilliant at the tender age of 14. I also remember seeing the video for Confusion but again, but still had no idea who the group was since the name wasnt shown. I played the mix tape for about 3 years then lost it. Then in '87 started to go to a "new wave" club, if you will, started to hear all of these songs that really got me dancing and were like nothing I had heard before. I asked a friend who they were and he told me New Order. Soon after that, I saw Substance. I pondered, I thought, I didnt buy. However later on I saw this really cool 12" with nothing more than a blue background and a single gold leaf. Thought it was the coolest thing. So I bought that. WOW! THATS the song that I love at the club! Rushed out, bought Substance. All the other songs on it are the ones I ask about at the club, including Cofunsion..I was hooked! When the family moved to Spain, I found all these 12" singles with different covers than the stateside releases, plus more releases other than Substances. I guess you can say I discovered them TWICE and havent lost them for 22 years!

True Faith, 1987. I was on holiday with my parents in the west of Ireland, listening to the charts on a little pocket radio whilst sitting on some rocks at the beach. Thought True Faith was sort of dense in that there were lots of lyrics and not much "space" in the song between verses.

yeah i bought the substance 2 cassette box in 1989 for 8.50p a lot of the tracks i never heard before either&and xmas 1989 i got the substance 1989 video .:)

ithink that song is like a story similar to close range hes thinking back when he was younger.

No, actually I meant that some old subjects seem to pop up in new threads regularly: "When was the first time you heard New Order", "what is 1963 about", "If Ian were alive..."

It's why I stay over at BCD mostly.

maya has a GI problem that is why she likes to discuss such things. And it is part of the reason she is so charming.

My first time i heard NO i was making out for the first time. To the lovely beats of 'Substance'

First time that I knew that I definately liked them was BM in 83, but when buying the back catalog realised I'd heard temptation and ceremony before but was too young and stupid to realise how good they were.

First time i heard them and heard of them was the TOTP performance of Blue Monday in March 83.

I never worked out though how Temptation had totally escaped my ears a year before.

BM in 83 on LIR and then bought PC&L only to learn they didn't put it on the LP. It was only available as a bonus on the cassette. Took me 20 years to locate the 12" due to laziness and other pursuits.

But I started buying all their records thinking it was on something else and low and behold a NO fan was born and somehow stumbled on the Temptation 7 inch and immediately knew it was the best song ever created and I was ecstatic that I had disovered something so brilliant and noone else knew about it until a guest UK DJ played it on K rock ( a very commercial rock station at the time in NYC).

I played the shit out of it. Ran out and bought as many versions of the damn song I could. Stumbling across other great songs in the process.

It was a great day!!!

Whenever Ceremony made it over here, probably April of 81. First brand new NO track that I heard on the radio was AOC, didn't know the new album was out yet in the US, got shivers listening to it, one of my fave moments of all time.

Used to listen to John Peel's show a lot,and before he got his fetish for African music,he once played a couple of songs off Movement when it came out.Can't remember what the other one was,but I taped "Denial" off the radio.First single I heard was Temptation,which I took into collage.My friends commented that they sound like Human League

The first NO record I bought in 1988 was Substance--well, it was actually a tape. The first record I owned was Michael Jackson Thriller but thats for another forum. I remember always seeing the video for True Faith on MTV. It was on an "alternative" show called "120 Minutes" that played videos from that genre--Cure, DM, The Smiths, etc... Everytime that video came on I was entranced. I couldn't quite figure out the whole bouncy people thing, but I just had to have more of their music! My friend owned the PC&L CD; Your Silent Face was another one of our favorites. And when Technique came out, Dream Attack was played heavily on the local alt rock radio station--i just couldn't get enough of that song. Ah, yes, my earliest memories of NO--not that any of you give a rats ass, but I digress...

A friend played me Movement back in 1982. I was 15 years old. I think his sister bought that LP when she was in London.

Loved them since then.

Almost exactly 22 years ago (oh my god, that makes me feel old). I had just started college and my dad was driving me there when it came on the radio, I remember the DJ remarking on how Blue Monday had been hanging around the charts for weeks and weeks, i'd never heard of it so i listened and i have to be honest i didn't think much of it mainly because i was realy into the Beatles at the time, but the fact that i do remember it shows that it must have made some impression on me, mild curiosity probably. It would be another year before i truly discovered NO.

Freshman year in high school...probably Oct'85 I swapped cassetes with my newly found pal Terrence. I gave him 'Some Great Reward' by DM and he gave me Low-life (taped from his Lp). I brought it home, listened to it and was really taken by the music, but wasn't sure if I had the right tape. I thought he had mislabled it or something because the names of the songs weren't being sung in the actual tracks!?!? Argh??! So I called him up and he said that NO were known to do that. That made me feel a whole lot better :) What do you expect? I was a dorky 14 year old! Anyway, now I could relax and really listen to the music. A week had passed and I was completely in love with this record. I loved the interaction between the synthesizers and the guitars. I loved the simplistic, yet earnest and thoughtful lyrics. I loved that melodic "lower" sounding guitar, which I later learned from the same friend, was a bass guitar. Within a few months, I had bought Unknown PLeasures, Closer, Still, Atmosphere, LWTUA, Temptation Ep, BM, TLU, Movement, Ceremony, TPK 12" and P,C&L. Yep, I pretty much blew all my $200 that I had saved up over the last year. Oh well, it was totally fucking worth it!!

I first heard world in motion way back when in 1990 but being only 8 at the time ddin't really take notice. Till a few years later when i was listening to the radio on my way into town and true faith came on, i thought this band are for me so first stop i bought best of new order, the rest is history

JOY DIVISION, and new order never appeared on togwt,however and this is where it gets interesting for me. the old grey ect did play an animated video for jds isolation,if this is indeed what you may be thinking about then you are the first person i have come across who remembers it,and thank god as i thought i was going mad. as for the first new order moment,"ceremony". quite simply amazing for the time,no one at the time thought in their wildest dreams theat new order could have even held a torch to the joy division ledgend. how wrong they all where(me included)i was blown away then and still am today.

It was a similar story to mine, the days when we used to tape the top 40 from the radio.

For me it was back in '84 and listening and recording songs on a station called 3XY, i can still remember some of the tracks that i taped which included Duran Duran - Union Of The Snake, Naked Eyes - Always Something there to remind me, Real Life - Catch Me I'm Falling and of course New Order - Blue Monday, and from day on i was hooked.

Sometime in 1985. A friend and I kicked out the rostered school radio crew (it went over the p a system). He put on a track from Low Life. Don't ask me which one.

It was True faith, but I only knew it for years later (I wasn't sure that was a N.O song because I couldn't find this one on the records I bought from them : PCL/Brotherhood then Technique)… when I finally found the song on Substance.

Sadly, it wasn't until 1987 that I discovered the Order. True Faith blared out of the jukebox in the 6th form common room and my musical tastes were changed forever...

WPIX in New York was a broadcast TV station (well, still is, but it's now part of the WB network) that showed all the Yankee baseball games (I'm a huge Yankee fan, btw, so just as an aside let's hope it wasn't Bernie's last game in the Stadium today!). At commercial breaks they would play a bit of songs I had never heard - in retrospect, someone there had awesome taste. Bits of Blue monday were their favorites to play leading into commericals and it must have been 1984, or 1985 I first really noticed. As soon as I learned that cool beat and bass was by a band called New Order, I was hooked....

Man, I'm going to sound like a complete noob around here when I start saying mine..

So anyway, mine's a bit weird, because the first time I heard New Order, I wasn't aware of them and didn't really know who they were. The first time I was really aware of them was in 2001, and I had started watching MTV2 quite a bit, was into pretty average fare MTV stuff (hey, I didn't know better). Saw Crystal's video. Liked the song, but just saw them as another band, but I was aware of them. Then 60MPH came around. Catchy, sublime, melodic indie track. I needed to get ahold of that track. I downloaded it, and happened to mention to someone that I was listening to it, and he recommended I check out the album (Get Ready). I borrowed it from my brother, who had started to get into them at around the time (but was well aware of their history) I really enjoyed the album, but I saw them as a bit of an indie band and didn't really know who they were.. I assumed they were the youthful blokes on the Crystal video! Not long after, there was a documentry where they chose their influences on the telly. Then I saw it. This song called True Faith.

Holy shit, I remember this video from when I was just a kid! The blue guys! Slapping each other! 1994! The USA World cup!

Yeah, that exact moment is when I fell in love with them. True Faith is still my favourite New Order song, too.

I don't remember BM being played though.

Then again I don't remember much from those years.

They were good back then, so it must have been a good thing. He had the first albums that SM made, and they are ace.

Fall of 1981, bought 7" Ceremony/In A Lonely Place at Northern Lights Records (gold/bronze sleeze)...followed by Movement LP....PCL cinced it for me!! (all the 60's types hated it around the house I lived in too)

...of course I bought "Closer" and "Unknown Pleasures" Fall of 1980 when I hear JD for first time

In Seattle in the early 80s there used to be a tiny record store downtown (it shared space with a skateboard shop) run by an English guy who also happened to have a weekly show called "Life Elsewhere" on a small community radio station, which I listened to quite a lot. So Norman (that was his name) hooked me up with the 7" of Ceremony, knowing that I had become quite rabid about Joy Division. At the time I was only vaguely aware that the former JD members had formed a "new" group. So it must've been spring of '81, when I brought that record home and first heard New Order in my bedroom, on my cheap stereo. I immediately loaned it to my fellow post-punk crazy friend at school, and he returned it to me with his fingerprints all over the gold cover!

If it weren't for Norm and his record store (which I had only stumbled on one day, as it was by my bus stop home to the 'burbs) who knows what sad turn my life may have taken.

I think I'll just go have my cocoa as well...
