Opinions on the WFTSC 3x7" mixes?

So what's the verdict then?

For me the mixes aren't fantastic nor are they completely dire. The Temptation one started out in a promising way until I discovered the remixers decided to pointlessly add their own vocals later on in the mix (??) the "let's mix 4 vocal tracks at the same time" idea just doesn't work and sounds massively out of tune for 90% of the mix. The EGG mix is again, a decent stab but the remixer seems to lose tempo between the synth and the vocal samples halfway through, it just doesn't sound right for about 30 seconds but I like the direction Cicada was going with that one.

Richard X's BLT is a good remix. Nothing orgasmic mind, I've never understood why people wet themselves so much over his mixes. This BLT is similar to what he did to Jetstream; standard club beat, nondescript blippy electronics and a reverbed-to-buggery atmosphere. It's a great club mix but pretty uninspired. However good enough to win best remix here for me. So far none of these mixes are remotely exciting as say, the Biff & Memphis TBTHOG or Perfecto's True Faith. There's nothing close to anything like that vibe here  The Jacknife Lee mix of WFTSC is so obviously a "I'll knock this mix out in my lunchbreak" type of effort. Take away the New Order elements and it's a fuzzy noise with a really simple drumbeat, London should ask for their money back.

The two WFTSC edits (Rich Costey and the Band mix) are simply edits so hard to get excited about, Costey's mix is a little different with less reverb than the band's.

Having said all that WFTSC (Album version) is definitely one of my top 10 favourite New Order tracks, I just wish London had treated it with a bit more respect when releasing it as a single. My overall rating for this single is 6/10, and one point is for the slipcase artwork :thumb:

Can anyone yousend the MP3's?? I hate to sound cheap but I havn't had a turntable in 12 years, The Songs are not available on Itunes-US and I am dying to hear them! lot's of thanks! martin

No MP3s available mate :(

I purchased the mixes off iTunes UK for just under a fiver altogether because I too don't have a turntable for the seven inches which are still making their way to me in the post. The M4P files are obviously protected and I'm not going to risk a digital watermark being in the sound too, sorry.

juno.co.uk are good if you want to order the seven inches, they ship abroad too :)

You need to hear his remix of Freeform Five - "No More Conversations" (easily the remix of the year for me) and his productions like M.I.A. - "10 Dollar" (whether you care for her or not, the music is astonishing) and Annie - "Chewing Gum" etc.

Temptation remix is horrible, others aren't bad

Temptation is too sparse for me - and agree about the "extra" vocal. EGG isn't too bad. BLT wins, but there doesn't seem to be much you can do to that song to ruin it. Unless your name is Armand Van Helden...

Release it 3 times , so the fans spend 3 times as much, Marketing Genius or what.

Is it just me or are the Rich Costey Edit and Band Mixes of the title track both identical? There is absolutely no difference between them - is this a pressing error or is it just another clever ruse by the record company to deceive us like with that notorious Sly n Robbie "(Completely) Ruined (In A Lunchtime)" Digi-pak edition. Jacknife Lee used to be in a shouty Irish punk band called Compulsion.....I wonder how many people know that?

Temptation was an odd one - I too noticed how Secret Machines added their own vocals to it - very strange. The Secret Machines album (Now Here is Nowhere) is absolutely mind blowing though. They're better off leaving other people's records alone.

EGG is pretty cruddy. But then these two remixes are not quite as bad as some of those desecrations on "The Rest Of" so count ourselves thankful for small mercies.

The best one by a mile is Richard X and his BLT - reshaped I suspect mainly from the original 12" of the single. But half decent nonetheless.

Nice artwork, but it seems that my slipcase isn't big enough? I think that the spine isn't thick enough, so the records don't go all the way to the edge, and end up with about 3 or 4mm out on the RHS. Or am I doing something wrong?

Try putting the 7" in the slipcase face down so the spine is on the right.

Listened to the mixes in a darkened toom through the headphones (just in case they sounded better...).

Quite like the EGG mix, although I agree with Alistair that Cicada got a bit loose with the vocal samples half way through.

Temptation sounds too muddy. Not much more than a reworking of the early Temptation sound it with superfluous vocals added on top. Bit of a disappointment.

BLT is ok mind, even if it is largely built around a single bass loop.

Overall, nice package, but in exchange for £££ for downloads, 7"s and an additional CD single I will probably return to the original and '98 mixes of Temptation, the 94 mix of BLT and the LP version of WFTSC... Still feels good to buy new NO products from the shops though. Roll on 'Singles'...

The individual cases are fine. It the special case that came through the post that's meant to hold the 7"s that's too small. It fits two quite nicely, but three is just too many for it.

if you take em out of the sleeves (just the black covers) they fit very neatly.. but I don't like having sleeves lying around!

Agree with most of the above. The Temptation mix starts well and it was almost like hearing the song for the first time all over again. But those added vocals halfway thru?!!.Horrible.And rearranging the lyrics was a bit crap too.

The EGG remix and BLT remix are ok ish.And there is a difference between the band edit and Rich Costey edit of WFTSC.It`s around the instrumental break in the last half of the song.Rich Costey has left the guitar in after the keyboard bit.

Yeah you`re right!.They do indeed fit perfectly like that.

What remixes of Temptation do we have to compare? The CJ Bolland one from 95 was simply a new composition with Barney whispering "Temptation" over the top. Obviously the word Temptation is not mentioned in the song lyrics so it must've been specially recorded or sampled.

Having heard the "5 Tracks" CDR with the 12" versions of these mixes it's safe to say the edits have butchered alot of them quite badly. The full 12" BLT is a great mix, it's growing on me. I like both EGG mixes but still can't abide Jacknife Lee's attempt at WFTSC. The Martin Butterich Remix of EGG is great but London probably thought it was too dark or introspective to get a place on the seven inches.

All in all I reckon "it could have been alot worse", you've got to give London some credit for deciding to hand over these earlier tracks for remix rather than tacking on another few useless Krafty/Jetstream ones. Still, I would much rather be discussing fresh bsides at the moment rather that more club mixes  But it's all worth it isn't it? Providing the band make good on their promise of a 2006 album :D (hopefully minus a winter 2006 release date)

to my ears, it sounds like EGG (Cicada Mix) is a different vocal take.

Pash Said: Quite like the EGG mix, although I agree with Alistair that Cicada got a bit loose with the vocal samples half way through.

Indeed, also in places EGG sounds very Blue Monday and the vocals were never quite going to work as they were sung to a different rhythm.

Pash also said: Temptation sounds too muddy. Not much more than a reworking of the early Temptation sound it with superfluous vocals added on top. Bit of a disappointment.

I will add my disappointment to Temptation, it started so promisingly in the style of the original 7" until it became a duet which simply doesn't work.

The 'Band Mix' of WFTSC is a direct edit of the album version - same levels, effects and mix, just edited down. It's probably edited straight from the final, 2 track master of the album version - just listen to that horrible, mid-word edit just before the 1st chorus, where a little bit of the first verse is removed, and the line "she is lost forever more" becomes "she is lost forever shore", which makes no sense. A well-dodgy edit.

I'm assuming after the 'Band Mix' was edited, they handed the multi-track parts to Rich Costley for a bit more post-production (and a better edit of verse 1, where you actually here the last word of the verse properly) and a beefier mix to create his radio edit. A much better version.

I was getting rather pissed off when it hadn't arrived on Tuesday. It came Wednesday but so late that I didn't have a chance to play it before I went into London & I was too pissed when I got home. I wish I'd just gone into Harrow or Watford & picked them up in person.

I hope they do a better job with Singles & the DVD set. I only ordered from HMV cos of the poster & box set exclusive of the DVD to ensure I got that.

I’m a little bit disapointed to band mix.WFTSC is perfect song and has beautiful melody, but the song still waiting for the sirens call. The arrangement is too monotonous. I waited some kind of growing pop symphony like The Perfect Kiss long version, Regret (New Order mix) or Crystal (6.52 min album version).I miss Gillian plying keyboards with harmonious chords, like sirens call.

Yep, me too, i really like them all sides.

I'd say the new mix of EGG is quite good. They've sampled Barney's original vocals from Temptation and actually rearranged the lyric! He also harmonises with himself too; he's singing a harmony alongside his original version at one point which makes me wonder if there was a vocal harmony on the original multitrack or not that wasn't used in the final mix.

The Rich Costey and band mixes are, as you say, straight edits of the album version and don't add anything really to the standard version. The Jacknife Lee mix takes a different take on WFTSC and one can see its appeal in the clubs but whether it does the Order's rep any good is a different matter.

Cheers to Chris for the vinyl and yes, I've recorded them to CD too!

I was pleasantly surprised - really enjoyed the 3 remixes of the older songs, wasnae keen on the WFTSC Jack-knife mix. The other two were just edits of the album were they not :uhoh:

The cover case is just fits the 3 singles in with the spines facing the right. (took me ages to figure that one out) my inner sleeves are a nice deep blue colour I think that the temptation mix is different but good, dont really like the EGG mix (never liked that song anyway), as for BLT that song has always seemed to me to be a track that any 2 bit DJ will try to do a remix of, just adding bits & bobs that dont really enhance the original mix. Bit dissapointed by the artwork for the singles CD - seems Peter Saville is charging money for old rope!

Are the versions on the 5 track CDR promo longer than the ones released on the 7" singles then?

horsepills wrote: Are the versions on the 5 track CDR promo longer than the ones released on the 7" singles then?

Yup, two of the mixes are full-length mixes (Richard X Remix of BLT and the Secret Machines Remix of Temptation), and you also get an exclusive remix of EGG by Martin Buttrich.

It's possible that the two full-length mixes might be included on the up & coming Japanese CD of "Singles" - due out 26th October.

After listening to and loving the new mixes of Temptation and BLT I put on my vinyl 'Rest of' and liked them twice as much. That version of Temptation is possibly the worst thing ever to have been associated with the name 'New Order'.

I don't know how they managed to screw "The Rest Of" up so badly, when there were a wealth of cracking remixes already available for most of the songs. Getting a load of remixers in to do them again was insane. :banghead:

I'd like to make a list of what my "alternative" Rest Of would look like it it were compiled today - but I really can't be arsed. I can't even decide what my all-time favourite New Order remix is.

Anyone heard the WFTSC-"Tribute"-Mix in full length (7:09)? I only listened to a version of bad sound quality but the remix is great. I Liked the way it played with the Bizarre-Drums. Just could use a little Re-editing. Who knows how to get this Mix on Vinyl or MP.3???

Yeah, too bad the Tribute Mix of WFTSC has such a bad sound quality and this awful hissing in the back. Still have no idea whether this was meant to be "official" nor who did it ????

In any case, I love all the new remixes beside Jacknife Mix of WFTSC... and still not sure about Cicada's version of EGG.

Why is nobody talking about Martin Buttrich's Remix of EGG by the way ??? Is it only available on the promo CD??? Because I think that's a very interesting remix!!!

Like the EGG mix quite a bit, like the BLT somewhat, the Temptation mix is rather unexciting.

Still waiting for a good remix (or cover version) of temptation. I once heard one in a dream, slowed down, with a sort of wind chime sound in place of the beeps on the sequencer line. Now that was an exclusive mix, only available in my dreams. I should have given it a FAC number.

I'd still like to hear a Sonic Youth style dischordant noise version.

Bizarre Love Triangle (Richard X Remix)

  • Very good remix! The full length version makes it even better. Definitely one of my favourite mix of that song, but I think Shep's mix is still the best one.

Everything's Gone Green (Martin Buttrich Remix) -I liked it very much, even more that the Cicada's. I think it sounds a little like an update to the original version without losing the original feel of the song.

Everything’s Gone Green (Cicada Remix) -EGG vs. Blue Monday. It's not that bad, but it's not that much creative... But compared to the other tracks, it is still a highlight.

Temptation (Secret Machines Remix) -Humm, strange this one. Maybe I'll get used to it... Too much different from the "original" for an extended version and too similar to the original for an updated remix (can someone understand what i mean?)

Waiting For The Sirens’ Call (Jacknife Lee Remix) One other that I have to get used to... I don't know so many mixes by this guy but he did a very good job with his "Jacknife Lee 12 Inch Remix" of U2's Vertigo. I was hoping something much better. I agree that London should ask they money back. :)

Waiting For The Sirens’ Call (Rich Costey Radio Edit)Waiting For The Sirens’ Call (Band Mix) They didn't add anything to the album version. Will we have any good remix for WFTSC? Maybe that Tribute Mix as finished/full sound quality? I have the 192kbps 7:09 file but it sounds a little unfinished for me. Thanks, robertoaf*gmail.com
