Sydney New Order Week part 2

Well just when I thought my self-titled 'Sydney New Order Week' couldn't get much better after part one (last Wednesday night's concert at the Pavlova), I was joyously proven wrong. It didn't look that way at first, as I approached Hum Records at Newtown, only to find a queue of several hundred punters snaking it's way out the door and around the corner, clutching one form or another of NO or JD memoribilia. I was pleasantly surprised how many people came to meet the lads, so I didn't mind the 45 minute wait. At least it wasn't like the in-store appearance scene in Spinal Tap, where Artie Fufkin demanded that his ass be kicked to the living bejesus. Anyway, I finally arrived at the check-in counter where the three wise men of music sat signing their lives away. It seemed so surreal to be that close to my long-admired heroes. You envisage yourself having a quick chat with them and everything, but you swiftly realise that after an hour's solid signing, they've just about had enough and you're ushered through without so much as a "Done any sailing on the harbour yet, Barney?". I'd be jack of it by then as well, I guess, so I was happy to get a couple of scribbles, most notably on the CD sleeve of Substance, which I intend to get framed. Local radio station Nova 96.9 was doing their arvo show live from the store and were keen to interview the lads after all the punters had departed, however their knowledge of the Order was sadly inept, it seemed. At this stage, I was still hanging around at the front like Hooky in the World film-clip waiting for something to happen when one of the producers of the show approached me and a few others, asking us to provide some questions. I started babbling on about this, that and the other, so she decided that rather than them asking the questions, they should get three fans to ask one each, live on air. "Would you like to come back inside and ask the band a question?"....would I what!!!! Being live on radio didn't bother me, as I've worked in many different fields of media, however putting it straight to my idols was something else. I was first cab off the rank and fired away with a query relating to the song that each of them is most proud of. In my delivery, I mentioned how they had been making brilliant music for 25 years since the days of Warsaw and Stiff Kittens and I think they respected my knowledge of their deepest past. I knew that Bernard would reply with Temptation, but I couldn't decipher the rest of their replies because I didn't have headphones on (like the band and announcer) and consequently, was getting confusing return audio. I'm going to try to get an audio file off the station, so I can find out what their bloody answers are! There might even be some pics on the Nova web-site, which I'll check out if I ever finish writing this novella. Being interviewers in the Michael Parkinson mould has it's privileges of course and it enabled me to get the thing I really wanted the most- a photo with the boys. It was all a bit chaotic, however I'm optimistic that something decent will come out of the roll taken, along with the shots taken at the concerts and I'll also pinch some off my fellow interviewer Tan, who reeled off several shots with her digital. So instead of just getting a quick autograph, I ended up being arm in arm with Barney and Hooky and Steve for a few precious seconds that I'll never forget. Sorry to make all you other Sydney fans jealous, but I was just in the right place at the right time. Besides, I figured it was a fair reward for fifteen years of patience and passion. And didn't that just elevate me into another stratosphere for Saturday's Big Day Out...(to be continued) DR p.s Oh and there was another bonus on my way back to the car, when I souvenired the official tour poster (for the separate Sydney and Melbourne gigs), which I noticed in a shop window. Alas, it was too late to get signed, but better than not getting it at all.

Heh-heh.....I've got my souvenired poster of the above-mentioned type, signed....by Hooky only though...

I've got tons of other posters too of 60m.a.h.....I was the bloke hanging around Newtown & Camperdown with my razor blade in hand, slashing those posters off the telegraph posts...

Anyone want those? How about a trade....
