My fave so far would probably be Area One in Mountain View last July...it was such a lovely vacation, and to see them for my first time in 8 years, hey...it was almost special!!!
Favorite (and only) - Area:One The Gorge, Washington
Meeting Allen and Johnny and Paula etc...was the perfect compliment to a beautiful day. Spent the previous day with magic mushrooms roaming the plateaus and valleys of the Columbia River Gorge. A rainbow appeared during NewOrder's set and the sun fell over the gorge while the band played on. Of course there were the fucked up lyrics, the "it's great to be here" bullshit, and a less than inspired BlueMonday but it was magical. I didn't stop talking about the show or feeling the emotional high for 3 months (you can only hear "shut up about that damn show" so many times) I still don't have a copy of that gig on disc. I've got the day before and the day after but not that day. Any help guys?

Jeff is referring to the gig at Sanfrancisco (mountain view) i think, unless it was LA. Actually i think the SF gig was Shoreline and LA was Mountain View. I was referring to the "Seattle" show. The set was the same for every date on the Area:One tour except for Vancouver (missed True Faith) I think. Allen and Johnny were at every show so they know for sure. Check the Tours and Concerts page here to see for yourself. Different shows but still amazing to see NewOrder after waiting so many years.
Okay...let's see...Mountain View is the city that Shoreline Amphitheater is in...sorry to cause such confusion!!!!!
And Mountain View is a city between San Francisco and San Jose...right on San Francisco Bay...
Jeff's right, it's fooking confusing. From what I recall, the Area:One tour was....
San Francisco (Mountain View)- Shoreline Ampitheatre Vancouver - Thunderbird Stadium Seattle - Gorge Ampitheatre LA - Glen Helen Ampitheatre, Devore
These gigs were advertised as per the major cities above but in reality they are,like, 3 small country's away. The Seattle gig....3 hour drive out of town!!, LA...a good 60 miles of gridlocked freeway east of downtown & $180 cab ride with a driver who was falling asleep at the wheel.
Have to say that Mountain View & Gorge are 2 of my fave NO shows of all time, as Brian described...incredible settings, great climate & a skinful of American beer to help 'get in the zone' ;)
At the same time Vancouver is about my worst. Cold, wet & a dry venue!, what the fucks all that about?
So Paul, you experienced Macc LC? my debut NO gig & for that reason alone will stick in my mind. Remember the Mondays from that show? hilarious. Then GMEX '88 was a good'n too. Hmmm, can't decide. Still it's a good feeling trying to figure it out.
Mine would be at the Hordern Pavillion, Sydney 23/1/02 because it's the only one I've been too. But I must say it rocked. My highlights would have to be Temptation and Blue Monday.

the Metro, Melbourne, 2002. Why, the best gig i saw out of the only 2 times i had seen them live, and a longer show than the Big Day Out gig 2 days earlier.
Has to be Birmingham NEC 26-03-89 (Easter Sunday) My first ever gig! Can't remember much about Happy Mondays except they were all stoned / pissed - just a pity I wasn't into them at the time

As fer New Order - what a gig;) Almost all of Technique was played (I think) and to my delight they also played 1963. I also remember Hooky was sat on top of an amp for a few songs - poor lad must have been tired
Absolutely brilliant concert and I think they closed with The Perfect Kiss - cos I can't remember them playing Blue Monday (could be wrong) left the concert and spent fuck knows how much on memorabilia (badges, t-shirts and a poster of Technique which was about 6ft high) First Concert has to be my fave fer purely sentimental reasons
I've got a recording from Birmingham but it's listed as the 24th and not the 26th. 57mins Sound board recording (but not great) good show. You lucky dog. A friend of mine had that huge Technique poster mounted and hung in his front room years ago...how i wish i had that monster now. bummer about the finger prints though.

I liked most of the obvious ones: G-Mex 88, Brixton 87, Finsbury Park 87, just cos each and every one of them was absolute BEDLAM! The only way to enjoy the Order was when you were in fear of getting your leg broken down the front! Brixton 87 will always stay with me cos they did Ceremony as the 4th song, so you're then waiting for the infamous New Order slow section to kick in ... but then they did Dreams Never End(!) and kept it kicking after that. Only 18 at the time but, fcuk me, I thought me lungs were gonna burst.
The pick of last year's gigs, for me, were probably Liverpool (for the obvious reasons), first Paris gig (fantastic crowd - mostly Brits, mind!) and LA (rendezvousing with the Mackem / Slough posse again!)..
Glastonbury 87, was a cracker, with em finishing with Sister Ray and Barney trowing stuff into Gillians keyboards.
Also Woolwich Coronet, with Do The Ostrich , whatever happened to em experimenting with new tracks live with lyrics totaly different to what appeared on albums.
Different sets each night in the good old days. Now theyve turned into Elton John same set. Heck I will still be at the gigs though.
Finsbury Park 87 - New Order, ACR, Happy Mondays and The Railway Children. Couldn't have asked for a better line up if I'd tried.
Birmingham 89 - As Shug says, a classic.
My best gig ever, though, was REM at Portsmouth Guildhall in 88, but that's a topic for a different board.

i was at malvern the famous winter gardens...it was like an old village hall...the encore i do remember was pretty crazy about 20 mins worth....i was near the front and managed to get gobbed on by bez...nice lad.we went to the gig on the train but fucked up on the connections back home and slept the night on the station...but it was worth it

talking about songs rolling into each other i remember sheffield university they kicked off with (not sure about order)..ceremony,age of consentand dreams never end with no break inbetween songs...as you say a bit hard on the legs you need a 15 minute version of 586 to refuel yourself
Mine would also be Birmingham Tower Ballroom 1986, 16 years old, first NO gig. Got absolutely battererd at the front but it was worth it. Great quality bootleg of the gig too so the memory never fades. Reading 1989 was also great - House of Love, Sugarcubes and then New Order - f*cking knackering! Had to sleep at Reading Station too!

Only got into the Order in '94 unfortunately - mainly due to the fact the rest of my family/ mates generally have shite taste in music..

Mark Smith - Birmingham 86 - Gillian's fave ever concert I have that tape as well - brilliant.
Can't remeber who mentioned Finsbury 87 - that was me uncle John's first concert - and he got the tape a couple of weeks later - love it!! same with Reading 89!! I'd love to have been at both!

sound quality was utter shite - however the experiance of seeing Barney, Johnny and PSB all up on stage together literally playing the whole first album was sublime to say the least ;)

I will cast the 3rd vote for Brum Tower Ballroom. Was my first time as well and I can still remember the palm trees on the dancefloor.
Brixton'87 was great as well...I lost a shoe that night and ended up walking round Picadilly Circus in the rain and sleeping at Paddington.
Finsbury '87 was memorable not only for the crush but it was the first time I saw ACR.
My first trip abroad to see them in Dusseldorf is near the top just because it was such a great adventure, especially when you're only 18/19. When we got there we were surprised to see so many Brits had also made the journey.
After Gmex'88 we managed to get a coach back to the Midlands at about 4 in the morning and after being at a rather dodgy curry house.
At the NEC gig in '89 the Mondays were standing right behind us. Though I was absolutely cream crackered as 5 of us had slept in a car at a service station the night before on the way back from Glasgow.
I really enjoyed Liverpool last year as well because it was the 1st time i'd seen them since '93. This time though my girlfriend and I stayed at the Adelphi - no sleeping in cars or at train stations once you hit your 30's.

Not alone in being misty eyed at the thought of the fake plastic trees at the Tower Ballroom ! How those palm trees have lived with me..... That could be as near to perfect a venue for New Order - played there three times so far (live in hope).
The 83 gig started so good it was just untrue with LWTUA. 85 was a slow burner that maybe would have benefitted from not starting with 6 new songs !! (note to Steve - give us a fucking break mate !), and the 86 show was just out of this world, a tremendous set well played and a great atmosphere. It's me that features on the audience tape of that show, having seen the set-list !!
Tiffanys in 85 - used to be my regular nightclub haunt !!!! (pete stringfellow ran it the 60's) - Cattle market type club with a massive tree in the middle of it.....its the words of Jarvis Do you remember the first time

It is true that it is not exactly in LA, actually it was about an hour or so from downtown in the damn mountains. It was beautiful though. Jeff you should have went to LA instead of SF, I heard it was a better show. And Gillian was there :)
I loved the concert because I was so close and because it was NewOrder. It was the first and only time I saw them but I was upset that the whole concert wasn't them.
Now that they decided not to come to the US :( I guess I will have to HOPE they will someday again!

I don't think it would have made much difference! I have a tape of the 94 Powerhouse gig when Hooky offered out the DJ, anyone on the board at that gig?

Barrowlands - 8-10-01 only my second NO gig (being a spritely youngster!) the last was in reading in 92 or 93 but i was 15 and didn't fully appreciate it - also there's the thing with the dedication to my hubby at the glasgow gig totally unforgettable
Best gig for me has to be Woolwich Corenet '87. Excellent set and because it was only advertised in the Standard on the day, the crowd was made up of proper NO fans.
I think "The Wonder Stuff" supported which was good as it was befroe they got that horrid violin

Think it must've been advertised in the Standard before the day, as I went and lived in Colchester at the time. Admittedly, it was a late call, though I do think it was in the NME, or Sounds, or whatever.
All I can remember is the Wonder Stuff getting bottled, and my then girlfriend screaming for people to stop throwing things.. .

Besides...I couldn't get my boss to let me off that late...I was originally planning on doing both Mountain View and LA...but the rat bastards claimed they needed me TOO much (so where is my fooking raise then???)...oh, and LA doesn't have Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge!!!!
