ERR no.

I once sent a letter to factory inquiring about revenge and electronic. It was tagged as fan mail and forwarded to the offical fan mail resonse service...at that time Steve and Gillian(according to Steve in NME all the mail went to them). My letter was returned to me, with sarcastic comments (mainly abusive of Hooky, Bernard and Wilson) scrawled on it and a picture of one of the chicks from the Round and Round Video with the words "Peter in one of his quiter moods" written on the back ("Peter?" must have been steve, he's the only one I ever heard call Hooky by his name (in sincerity anyway)).
Only one page of the letter remains, the other and the pic having been destroyed by a vengeful female.
If you REALLY want them to know something REALLY badly...shout REALLY loudly on here, someone vaguely involved with management or whatever might be reading, it does happen now and then.

Welcome PATRICK.![]()
I wrote to them a few times at Palatine Road in the eighties and Hooky usually replied. If you sent an SAE with it, it nearly always came back. I asked him about Procession and a few other songs and he told me what he remembered. They were very anti the idea of 'fans' at the time as they were against the idea of being lauded as gods etc and hero worship. It's the same idea that never saw them want a fan or info club formed.
Fair play to them though: rather than have your honest questions and wishes ignored or dealt with by some faceless underling, they took time to do it themselves.
Punk rock!!

Which branch would that be then Mike?
Heh, I live in the USA (yeah, I know, it sucks :p) and I don't know any NO/JD fans. I don't even know anyone who has heard of them...
I'm not sure how I would even go about sending a letter to another country. I don't send letters very often. :p
welcome to the board, Patrick. :)
Sending mail elsewhere is just about the same as the US, just lots more postage. :D
(but not so bad if you just go to the post office and mail from there.)
i sent a letter way back enquiring as had been told the standing room at the front of the nec for the 89 gig was fan club only.
came back with what looked like peters scrawl on it.
Welcome to the nuthouse Patrick!![]()

Fook aff what would I say to the old boy anyway? "errrrr you rule" "sell me a clone theory" "can that son of yours play for shit or what" :D
anyway, I sent you the revised "16 yrold who's got chicks and bass and all sorts of nefarious activities we wont discuss here to take care of that he'd much rather be getting on with and anyway those cunts at school want me to read shit too" version. Worry when "my" Barney's Angels start sending....
"Dear Jack, please can you ask your dad to steal 17 pairs of Bernards boxer shorts. thanks"
BTW see how none of us instantly, in response to the orinal question, yelled "uhuhuhuh Jack's dad's..."
What a nice lot.

Hey! I don't need Jack to put his neck on the line asking for boxers.. I mean, we don't want to send his dear dad to the floor in such a fit of laughter to rival that of the 'Times Change' "hidden laugh track" ![]()

That's fine, as long as good Jack makes sure his dad sees our pictures, and passes that on as well. I wouldn't want Bernard to sit there thinking he's got an ugly mob of boxer-knicking fans. :D
We're the classiest broads out there, don'cha know. ![]()
sadly it's more likely you'll be played as a bunch of insane toothless harpies.....bigger laugh that way. :)
Hmmmmm handing him a loaded gun really aren't we :)
I think everyone's just programmed to think
"hit single=you are J-lo"
NO's constant lack of pretention in that direction has lead to me really hating most other bands :)

Course now he knows we're mental but harmless(mostly), and that he'll never have to buy a drink in his life (whatya mean again?...he's underage! (and a bassplayer :D :D :D ))

i can see this thread on a rehearsal room wall if you keep this up. You should ask Our Jemma to let you see the little rewrite of love Vigilantes I did for her :D
So...you don't sleep either? You seem to have been online since I got up ( maybe not)

"up yer hole ya old bugger I get peronalizd insanity in me inbox once in a while"
:D I HAD totally forgotten the aversion chaps of his age have to anything longer than a movie tagline tho ;)
I mean you can see the problem....Guy who has some insane teacher yelling at him to read 1800 pages of some apalling wank (why is it the year above you and the year below you always seem to get books you think wouldn' suck all that bad), and then fill another 1800 writing his opinions on it, as long as they are the accepted opinions not his actual own ones[1]....sits down at his PC and gets mail from guy asking tricky quesions about a gig 4 months away in his trademark screeds of nonsense.
Not happening is it....brain fart on my part.
I wonder how long before the big man's yelling up the stairs "stop hanging out with those fookin nutters and do your homework"
:)

I hope they do. *dares*
I don't sleep much. All my work is on the computer so pretty much I stayed glued to it for too many hours a day. Those around me try to curb my schedule to fit the normal working world's, but that just means I get another pot of coffee down my gullet so I can stay awake further.
Nah, won't ruin his life, he'll just write a song about it. I expect namedropping, sir!

But I must ask Jem if it's OK to post "booze vigilantes" here (feels right to ask I did write it for her....it's not a love song, note the title, calm down)
This, ladies and gentleman, WAS a thread about a seemingly innocent question about fanmail for the band.
It has been slightly overthrown.
We do apologize, and will return you shortly to your regularly scheduled programming.
Right after me and Steve stop snorting in laughter.
why do I always attract female partners in crime. it's scarey. Yet i couldn't pull a pint at a lock-in.
I always wind up with male partners in crime, because most chicks won't be caught dead speaking their right mind. Suppose that's why I like the girls around here, they remind me of me enough to feel comfortable.
:)
Odd aint it. Not as odd as the fact that I've cracked the 150 post mark in a single 24 hours period I think I should declare and retire.
Is that a new record then? I think I vaguely remember 106 from a bit ago. I'm shocked I've had so much to quip about. Watch me go silent tomorrow.

Wrote the boys and Factory on Palatine Road back in '83 even with an International reply coupon...nothing back..period..
Only way I knew anything new was coming out of Factory was my lurking around Northern Lights Records or OarFolkJokeOpus Records. No advertising. Way I found the other Facotry bands like Section 25, Crispy Ambulance, and ACR was the apparent gaps in the FAC catalog system and seeing this other strange stuff with FAC numbers on them.
Factory could never market to save its life.:\ohwell: :\ohwell:

I'm trying to find an avatar that gets rid of all these pesky hotties and leaves me with just one (you of course).
I think that's actually the worst picture in existence of me :)
Ladies and gents...some NO lyrics rewritten by me, for a "special chick" (or was it "special needs chick" I can't remember)
Booze vigilantes
for jem
Oh i've just come from that sodding forum
From a thread that we have nicked with the greatest skill
We are so getting banned, our accounts getting canned
And we'll be lucky if they don't call our isp's
chorus
..
Let's drink some booze and get on some tunes
My Missy jem let's shatter the blues
we've got to hang out, drink dance and shout
Cos you're just the coolest loon
..
well you just can't believe the joy I do receive
each time I click refresh and see the posts you leave
My gob it just can't lie, it breaks into a smile
And I know I'll be just fine for another while
repeat Chorus
Jem you mental bitch I think it's time we ditched
all pretense that you've not charmed me up a fookin treat
though you're only “mostly single”, my nerves you do so tingle
And I do so wish that Bolton was not so far
Chorus to fade with increasingly loud bass and cries of “Jemma you're foooooookin great”
I received a reply from John Peel when I wrote to him in late April 1980. I'd asked if there was any chance of another Joy Division session. The great man, in his vertical, rigid writing replied, 'Not much chance I'm afraid, Ian Curtis died yesterday'. I received the reply on 21st May 1980... :(
As for fan mail - I've always thought it would be a bit sad to send it. I thought about it. But no. Just couldn't put myself through the embarrassment of writing, waiting for the postman and receiveing nothing. Sort of wish I had now...
Ah! Those lyrics! ![]()

I wrote to 'em back in 81 when i was 11, in my neatest joined up handwriting: enquiring about 'a fan club'. Got the same bit of paper back with "there aint one- P Hook" scrawled in pencil.
Nice to hear that NO dodged that hokey tie-and-cardigan official band fanclub, YMCA boys brigade-whatnot business where everyone looked like an extra from a Jam video. (Edit: Though NOOL as a fanclub is great, true punk rock DIY!)
What I wouldn't have given to be on the Factory mailing list though
.
I wrote to Factory in the late 80s enquiring about New Order info. I got a friendly, handwritten response from Tony Wilson.

The one thing Hooky forgot to say on Lovelines was that someone will eventually come to look for you in a darkened room - and having your kit down getting rigorous with ones self is highly conducive to getting laughed at or scarring someone for life.
Or perhaps the man intended that. ![]()

Not amazin? have you SEEN slightlynarrow.co.uk ? it's a fookin black page with my gob on it :D (sort of started doing SOMEthing about that yestersday actually....but I'm into steam powered html editting so it's never gonna be as cool as yours) Suppose I better read it now, see what ballix yer talking :)
Jack's site wins, it's more informative than mine ever has been! Steve's wins because he's at least got music on his!
Me pimping resourceful HMTL editor/FTP prog
Feck...it... I'm going to have to do something about my site now.
Love that bass, Jack. *reads more*
Melly, you can code PHP with me anytime!
(None of that loser-ass ASP crap like some websites.)
If you'd post "Being Cute" as your avatar we'd all certainly be blinded by your radiance.
Haha, you sure I'm the one that talks bollocks??![]()
Reading some of your past posts, I was under the impression it was you ![]()
The music's a secret tho Melly, it's not linked off the "main page". will be soon if I can leave this bleedin website long enough to do some stuff. Strictly a Quanta+ boy for editing. You just type away and when you get stuck it has all the tags there for you :)
Jack that bass gallery is PORN mate. that see-thru perspex job....hmmmmmmmm
what's with the hairy blue one but?
have you seen these.....

REALLY want one, disgracefully cheap too..grrrrr wish I was back at work.
MUST find you a pic of my mate's bass...you'll shit yerself.

If you use that as your avatar you'll gather men faster than I seem to gather women round here. And I'd dribble on my keyboard
(what cnut said "mor than usual?" ?)
BTW those Aria's are knock off yamaha's I THINK.
Oh man! My buddy in high school took apart his mail-order bass from JC Penney and hand-made a Gene Simmons "Axe Bass" body out of a piece of wood, then painted it black and silver. Now that's pathetic.
But then again, I was his best friend in high school, so I guess that makes me sub-pathetic.
I know they're not cool anymore but I really wish I had a Steinberger headless.
Or just some head.

Pathetic by association! ![]()
I was in a Heart coverband. It could be worse.
I used to nick a hohner copy for the studio sometimes. Not quite as punchy when funked as the real deal. But really nice bass, and still on my "if I see one cheap when I'm in shoppin mode" list. Only things I could never cope with but were the odd balance on a strap ( not wrong, just odd) and my hand flying right off the end of the fucker when I went for the 1st fret :D
As promised...... French Tony's bass
his aint actually there as it's a custom 6 string job, but you get the picture.
Not a terrible fan of uprights, put off by trying to get an audible note out of a 3/4 scale in school I think.
And yes...they are for fucking j**z cunts.

I got sent a link to something reminscent of that bass. Tempting, tempting.
Yeah, but most slackhead's have their ego so far up their corned hole that they can't even see for their own BS they pipe out hourly on their message groups.
Nothing like a good old fashioned nix penis debate of elitism. ![]()
Off the side, looking at Jack's site he's got a picture of Boosty Collins and I'm thinking - that guy's been taught right. All hail anyone under the age of 20 who even knows of Bootsy, let alone pimps them proudly!
I saw one of those Zon basses the other day when out shopiing (because I always make a point to go to a music store as my final wind down), and it caused a pull in a nether region. Salesguy wouldn't let be bring it down, because it was on reserve for another customer, but he played me a track of his that he did as a demo for the product and I felt very warm and wiggly like I was sinking to the floor.
I dunno if any or all of these are still made at louden's plant down the road from me, but they were protoyped there. as a publicicty thing they brought a 4 and a 5 string over to college....u know, pics of tutor and adoring students with shiny new locally built megabass. Tutor grabed the 5 string and i just stood and gaped at him like, you KNOW I'm the only other bassplayer in the room, give me the other one (yes, they'd got a tutor there, but not the bass class, apart from 7-9 on wednesdays was me...being the only fulltimer music student in it). So he took pity and let me have it.
bout 4 seconds after i'd hung it on me and plugged up I was glaring at him with a look that just said "you fucker".
he'd always banged on and on about how the bass itself is only 10% of the sound and rest's in your fingers. LYING TWAT! It may be true if you're choosing between two expensive kick ass basses. But if you set down an aria proII SLB-II[1] that you love with all your heart, and pick up a £3000 or something Goodfellow. Now way. My finger blasted up and down the thing like Victor feckin Wooten..and the tone....good lord the tone...it was blissful. One day I WILL buy a nice bass promise...but every time I start thinking about it I feel SO sorry for the Aria, that I start to think about having it rebuilt properly by a bass guru...then I get confused and buy something stupid instead.
Two Q's Melly....you have msn (or somthing...I think Gaim can do the lot)? cos my next line of questioning is much too sick and perverse for the ears here gathered...you should be able to guess by it being the only bit of your post I didn't reply to.
Jack....what's the score with the neck pickup in Hot and/or Hot1...I swear on some recent videos it looks like either the neck pickup's been yanked out and the gape taped over....OR there's tape over the pickup to stop strings whacking poles. Or am I seeing things? (I refer you to my previous avatar for all enquiries about my sight)
[1] sort of a cover version of the series Jack's bass belongs to. Passive and with cheaper electronics. and made of russian ply. I assume the Yamaha's are actual solids.

Pretty spiff site, Jack. If the band thing doesnt work out, look into web design.
By the way, I agree with you about 'Land Down Under' being a song of grace and pure class.

I only found out about it when i walked into my form room and my history teacher was playing it respectably loud through the dvd player in the classroo. he's a cool guy.![]()
I'm pretty bored at the moment, just playing along to Jeremy by Pearl Jam on my bass, its such an amazing song i love it!! ![]()
Hope you had a good Saturday bumbag. Missed crazy one here :D
Whoever said about webdesign had a point y'know. If you did code that yourself that is. Step away from the bass an get a proper job :D ( I suppose you're the one guy who can't really get THAT speech).
Suppose I'll go back to "modernizing" my site.

What's your favourite New Order song Jack? and do you play along to any? Good luck with the Band mate..maybe we'll get 2 Hookys banging out great tunes eh![]()
My fave song by NO? now that's well hard for me to say cos i like so many, but I think im gonna go for....love vigilantes. love the lyrics and the melodica and the bass n guitar riffs, and barney's little solo bit is the best bit for me.
I can play loooooaaads of NO songs, the only ones i can't play are the ones that have like little or no bass in, like world or ruined in a day etc... but I can play all the others really.
Awwww man my dad is so cool he said my band can start using our basement which is like done up and nice as a practise place!! woohoo! That's gonna be well good. Well as soon as we get a first gig opportunity I'll post it on here, hope to see you all there. Even you Campbell. ![]()
What he meant to ask was, what are your top 3 Black Sabbath tunes?
I'm going to start an all-bass all-the-time thread on BCD so we can tackle the big issues facing humanity. C'mon over bassheads.

You've never had a northern irish heckler then? We're very very good. Still best to start with a real challenge, in terms of kicking the legs out from under hecklers you've a tougher act to follow than even bassmanship. Tell you what mate, a comfortable rehearsal space makes all the difference, doubly so if it happens to have a wee vocal PA for the singer. Beats the crap out of a bedroom/living room no matter how well specced :)
Well you know you've got ONE gig open to you...NOOLday. But I can see a gobby wee bugger having no bass in the PA at his current rate of gobshitery :D:D
(Jack's sitting there thinking, "no worries, I think I know where I can put my hands on a bass amp that will lay waste to your PA paddy!")
Of course...someone Good might come along betwen now and then, and I can just get on with seeing how much trouble me and Jemma can cause ;)
PS: your selection of NO tracks you can play...LOL you , me, and every other bass player on this site :) (and yer also right about LV being a really classy bit of Barney) EDIT: BTW I don't mean "ah you're shite, we can all play those" I mean, no one else bothers with Hookyless tracks either :D
i gotta say i do like world though, and ruined in a day is brilliant when you're feeling down or just generally in a mood.
i am playing along to metallica at the moment, thats a bit off topic, but hey there u go. love metallica.
jack, off topic's a relative term round here.
i sinned regarding metalica, I let my personal feelings about them put me off their music. Not to say I don't still drag old "pullin teeth" out now and then to marvel at the late great Cliff.
And yeah those NO tunes are good, excellent, but just no point in learning them :)
Actually, the tune of their's I play around with most is either DNE or The Happy One, which is actually quite tricky with chords and stuff......love it but....especially seeing the old boy doing it on Tony's show, just him, the machines and his bass. Do remember muttering something about "how come nothing blew up, went out of tune or other wise sucked? this may be the key to good NO gigs, send Hooky on his own"
If you aint seen it, lemme know I'll webserve it for ya (quality is ugly)
come back and tell us that when your post count's in 3 figures.
You'll think we're all perfectly OK by then.
"ONE OF US ONE OF US ONE OF US"
Cliff Burton was amazing. Pulling Teeth is just too good to talk about on here, the guy was a legend.
Metallica are one of my fave bands for sure, definitely in my top 5 bands anyway, i can play a lot of their stuff, my band do a great cover of For Whom The Bell Tolls, check it out if you haven't heard it man
it rocks especially the high bass intro.

You ever listen to Primus? Very silly, and some truly odd bass styles like basically treating it like a big banjo, among ither daftnesses. Not all their music is great tho. get's a bit like J**z, just showing off. Some of it's awesome tho. I know the track yer talkin bout BTW, but will need to relisten cos it's been a long time.
Only 3 MB....very good.
Ahhh, there's that show! I used to have it on my computer, and somehow it went missing.
Files like to skitter away from me.
Primus, RHCP, me putting on Clapton and zoning out during school (when they didn't mind a Walkman brought into class). I've fallen more and more into funk lately just trying to absorb all of the fat, chunky and melodic tones that so many people were experimenting with.
I'm having a slow Sunday. My brain hasn't cranked to full speed yet. *Model T windup brain engine*
Yo Melly. That email addy in your post actually work? I have something to show you, it's big and pink and you'll like it (chorus of OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH from surrounding pervs)
Jack, old chap, Melly and the ahem "ladies" and I would like to know how errrr "Mrs Jack" feels about Barney...I'm sort of assuming her hormones haven't gone totally wrong yet unlike this lot, so she'll probably shriek and smack you when you ask.
Jack....bassplayer thread on Behind Closed Doors mate....vote for the sins you've committed...i'm boned big time according to the list! :)
Before you head over there I'd like to tell you it's quite safe, that no one bites and no one is quite as insane as they appear. Sadly I am not that good a liar.
May the force be with you and all that!
BUT...the question is do I want to go behind closed doors with you? ![]()
What are you talking about "Mrs Jack" and Barney? Have missed something?![]()
It's not me you need to worry about, it's yer man Gnu Odor (no, actually, most people go nuts over there) :)
We were just wondering if Mrs Jack (ie your GF) would like to be one of Barney's Angels?
Hmmmmm, I don't think Barney is really her type, I know she likes Johnny Depp and the singer out of a band called The Used who is called Bert, but who knows, maybe she is a closet barney's angel ![]()
aww this bass is sweet, the BB1200S man it's so good to play

That's just a deliberate wind-up ya bugger :) EDIT... actually the coolest bass owned by anyone on here is Samantha Chapman's :)
And as for the mrs, that's Ok, we had to check (but I'd worry about any woman who fancies a guy called Bert)
certainly takes some doing.....espially if he's using heavy strings.
