NOOLs with bands

I don't know if this should be at the Behind Closed Doors forum, but I'll post here first.

How many of you out there currently have a band or were once in a band and have been able to make use of the JD/NO influence without feeling too sheepish? I front one currently and I know there are a fair number of musicians on these forums so I'd like to know how their own music is going.

Post myspace pages or other stuff in your replies if you so desire. I think enough members here have an open mind and obviously no one has to comment on the quality of the music if they feel wary about doing so.

Bands? Old hat.

i play bass in my band, one song has a high bassline.

Why should you be Jack. I tend to think of it as a whole style or genre of playing. It's up to the likes of you to carry it on (since I've had my chance and I'm too old).

I'm a total one-man party band.

sometimes I feel like a walking FAC if that's any indication of the sort of high brow influence I blame on the bands.

I try to sneak them into everything.

Sorry mate, my browsers being random about sound, can;t hear your tunes. Will make a point of listening on different browser later. Stage setup looks very slick tho, nice. You don't half look like a record company exec mate.

I suppose I should make some efffort to annswer the question.

Me and my mate Rich Hayes are the SlightlyNarrow SoundSystem. Rich likes NO but isn't as demented about them as me...it shows in the music :D

We don;t do live any more (which breaks my heart I love it) because ever since we moved to PC from atari, we've not trusted any rig we've built. Well we did knock up a bulletproof setup AND set list a coupla years ago...but then the guy who was organising the gig...forgot to organize the gig....big factory influence there. Now we just feck around, mainl seperately because we've each evloved such different ways of working on PC;s that we can't do the 2 guys on poor atari thing we used to. we will get round to attaching my cubase to his ableton and buzz one day. As it is, I make "steve tunes" until 75% done, then let Rich do housey things to them, and he makes "rich tunes" that I make sound like someone other than Rich mixed them (he's as good a drum programmer as steve Morris, but his brain just lets go when it comes to any and all production aspects....very common to receive tunes from him that start on the 3rd semiquaver of the bar). And often we do totally our own tracks. We still jam once in a while too which is always awesome....I really love improving with machines......and a JV90, mogue Rogue and me bass make for good options. My "lead instrument" is the mixer tho, I'm fixated on making music by feeding effects and stuff back into themselves and using timed delays to do cut-ups.

It is true, I dont look like a record company guy, but that is in fact what I am.

I am actually something of a celebrity in Ohio, especially in Columbus, which is the 13th largest city in the US.

My band usually plays big shows, and I am quite well known as a photographer, I show and sell my work in many different art galleries. I am also the resident DJ at one of the biggest, most popular clubs in the city (I always play NO in ym sets) AND I am a double major at OSU (Fine Art Photography and Creative Writing).

I come from a poor, working class family, and when I was 14, listening to New Order, PIL, the Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, they made me realise that I could live out my dreams, that I could become an artist.

Possibly the earliest thing i remember hearing NO say (or first to wedge in my brain forever) was Hooky about the pistols at the lesser free trade hall "we thought if they can do it, we can fookin well do it too". Soon as I heard it I thought...."if a bunch of mental cases like NO can create such passionate beautiful music, I've gotta be able to manage something that at least doesn't suck ass". I'd already been at the shit for a while, but that gave me a real warm glowy feeling :D

Oddly enough i listen to my own stuff all the time, 2nd only to NO....if I didn't LIKE the racket I made there would be no point making it. Not saying I've ever got past the "artiste" problem of tearing my soul out over such and such a clever so and so on such and such a track...and when I tell anyone wassup they just stare at me like "huh? the Wha? it's great"...but only I can hear what it was MEANT to be in my head.

EDIT:....loving the fast 16th pulsey thing and the big ass phasey string and most of this first tune. I was about to say something totally unkind about the drumloop on it, until I heard the wee Art of Noise..sort of White noise against drums thing. Total sucker for that. Proper NO ending too...pile everything in at once, add some more. then stop the thing more or less.

2nd track's got a bit of a Donna summer thing with the bass and a bit of an enola gay thing with the strings. Like that. nice accousticy kit against the electronics. not bad. (take it from the name it's meant to have vocals?)

Congrats, you're the first person to get more than "I suppose it doesn't suck" as a review from me here ever....aprt from some of the community stuff. Speaking of which get your cover version party dress on and enter something for community 2. Probably best if you get a haircut tho :D

I totally understand. I acutally had an upbringing pretty similar to New Order's. I grew up in a poor depressed inner city neighborhood where it rains a lot....went to crappy public schools.

Listening to NO made me think I could make music too.

Desperately trying to work out where you got such an accent...it's entirely UnGerman, and fits no precise part of the English speaking world (not a kick in the arse off the way people from Northern ireland sing actually, but not quite). I think it could be quite a distinctive voice actually, tho I'm sure it'll be a love hate thing.

See your drummer BTW? next time you're recording, send the fucker out for coffee. While he's out, tighten down all the cymbals, and if needed, add felts. When he comes back, get his shitfaced so he just thinks it's his ears. It's either that or explaining too him, that nobody else on EARTH, not even other drummers (well maybe) care that he has some hand crafted Turkish crash that costs 8,000 Euros, and that he needs to grow the fuck up before he turns into a little black box (unless the painkillers are doing my head in and it WAS a little black box...in which case...new cymbal samples :) ).

Minor nit-pick just...mainly caused by a pet hate....mainly brought on by 2 drummers I used to work with who were just unco-operative plebs, but I digress.

Top tunes...reckon this lot will hate them, too "Proggy" but I'll cope with anything up to and including the dafter fringes of j**z.

Nice read! Well... i'm a lot, but definitely not "prog"... that's the last thing (style) i'm really listening to. my drummer is, well, was... i'm working with a new one at the moment, who is more... well "straight forward", more like the stuff I'M listening to like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Guided By Voices, Ride, Blur, Therapy? and of course NewOrder and affiliates.

And thank God my accent sounds sounds a bit "out of place" and un-german. Have you ever heard a german speaking "proper" germanenglish? Scary, very scary CHEERS!

I'm so used to hearing Michael Schumacher speak that I thought the word "honestly" was just the sound of a German inhaling :D

I meant prog as in measuring from New Order down.... not as in measure agains Yes or Genesis (before they stank of shit)

Loved the drum production particularly on the first track...very Hannet, very unknown pleasures.

Vocal needs a little more dynamic taken out of it FOR MY EAR...employ dafter compressor setting or tape singer and mike stand together to stop moving around.

I came close a few years ago with joining a band called echo brain. but i wasn't confident enough in my bass playing to join. they broke up like 2 months later for unknown reasons. i would like to form a band called anisette, like a duo with another female musician. i also play viola and keyboards. most likely it will be folk rock.

I played bass and guitar in a band for a while a few years back, and we did an album which featured quite a bit of my Hooky-esque basswork (or rather, my poor imitation of the master's basswork ;) )

Personally I think "San Ysidro" is one of the best things I've ever written, but what do I know ;)

Have been in a few bands (as guitarist/bassist/keyboardist/tone-deaf 'oozin arghhs' backing voaclist) in my mis-spent late teens/mid twenties, but none of which amounted to much - covers mostly (of the Sugar/Husker Du/Weezer variety), with variable original content. All have since disbanded (and in one spectacularly inspired instance, reformed shortly therafter without me!).

I was often the source of some antagonism within my bands, as I was relentless in trying to get NO/JD tracks played...on a few occasions I succeeded in getting them to agree to Regret or LWTUA, but funnily enough tensions arose when I told the drummer or bass player they were getting it wrong....

So just a 'solo' hobbiest at the moment - mucking around with sequencing on the home PC and integrating guitar, bass and keyboard. I find it hard to get the time to complete much though, as the LadyBear, work and my PhD take up nearly all my time CTB

Working on a solo album at the moment. All instruments being played by me. Twelve tracks in various stages of completion, will devote some serious time to it in the new year.

I was in the Army medic band for a year or so...

Sadly it was many a year before that JD/NO orchestral cover version album...

I have several projects going on, each of them a variation of industrial and noise. The main influences are Throbbing Gristle/Coil/Psychic TV, Cabaret Voltaire, SPK, NON/Boyd Rice, that sort of thing.

Then there's Power Through Will, which is more on the darkambient side of things. The most recent project is Noir Magnetik, which is mainly for noise experiments, soundtracks etc. Both of those are in their infancy so there's no web presence yet, although I slapped the NM name on a score I composed for a modern dance company.

I'm thinking of doing a power electronics style cover of "Isolation."

been in bands since 1987... influenced by Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Echo & The Bunnymen, New Order, and Happy Mondays type stuff...

Half done track syndrome, a real shitter. Mate of mie has 15 albums worth of killer tracks on his HD he's never done anything with other than loop 4 bars over....and use them to make sure his system is working. OR he did have til his HD dumped and he lost the lot! finish your tunes people :)

been in bands since the late 90's... doing various things. never had much of a new order influence, because i never played bass in any of the bands and we also rarely used keyboards back then. i've been recording with my roomate for the last year, but we are putting together an r&b ep (me writing, him playing/producing) and a folk ep (him writing/playing, me producing). also, i've been working on an album that should be split between improvised guitar stuff (just looped guitar, but nothing that sounds like guitar...) and drum stuff (just a drum machine, but really all about noise...). it's actually just a project so that i can learn how to produce a little better... hrm...

r+b ..not my thing folk...not my thing

Can't wait to hear the "frippertronics" stuff tho :D
