1.WTF you done to the neck pickups in the Eccleshall basses and is it a defence measure against you twatting the E and A off the polepieces?
2.Can't you get someone to plane an inch off the back of the Shergold since you cannae stand up with it no more ;)
3. Even tho you don;t seem to use them any more, are you still engaged in your quest to own every Clone Theory every built, and if not....will u let me know when you're selling some on Ebay :D

The venue is near the river but it was not flooded. I know cause I was there that night. I blame it on the promoters though, they didn't sell enough so they thought it would be for the best if they lied to just everyone. Bollocks to them!

I know what gauges he uses on the 6, they are on Shergold's site. But I play a 4 string, and of a standard scale length so anything for a weirdscale 6 is no good. From pictures it looks like they come in somewhere between Godzilla's dental floss and battleship anchor chains. presumably played with a concrete slab.
I always play things that look like guitar strings with ideas above their station with a really soft pick, you can make some lovely melodic tones, but I doubt you could shake the room like I suddenly found out Hooky does in Nov :D

He uses 60,65,80,105 on his four string. Nice and tight!!
I don't think changing your pick is going to suddenly start shaking the room; I'd look elsewhere in your signal chain. But if you really want to get geeky, apparently in his Revenge days he sometimes used .96mm nylon Dunlops.
The gauges on the Shergold site don't match the gauges he gave in Bass Player, so either one of those sources is wrong or he's using heavier strings these days. 
The same article quotes him as using Elite Bass Sensors, which don't seem to exist.
I imagine he pays less attention to these things than we do.
#1 might be answered with another question - why did the Eccleshalls ever have a neck pickup in the first place? His other basses don't have one. (For that matter, why don't they just have a pickup in the sweetspot?)
I don't blame him for not wanting to drag the Shergold onstage, that thing's a beast. You'd have to shave an inch off the neck, too. Why not get someone to build a custom 6-string light enough to use live? A 6-string Eccleshall?
As for the Clone Theory, when did he stop using them?
Cheers fer gauges, last time I had somethng that thick was on a semi and I was bleeding from the first two fingers on both hands after 30 mins, stripped my callouses off and everything. Mind you it was 1cm action at the 12th fret, might have been more the cause.
And Chase, I kinda meant the strings would fatten the sound out on the higher notes more than anything, but I like it thin anyway. And yer not wrong bout the shergold, i played a 4 string modulator fretless once and it's a BRUTE. It's owner's band have banned it form gigs for being 6dB louder than his other basses too LOL.
Ah, well, he does claim that the reason he uses those heavy top strings is for the thicker low end, so you'd be right. I can't see going that heavy myself, either. I've heard he likes the action high, too - me, I want it fast and low.
It's just as well my Marathon 6 is a stay-at-home beast; they're so rare I wouldn't want to risk taking it out and having it lifted. Great tone on those things though.
One day i will get a decent Six. For now I am contenting myself to learn to play any 2 strings together sans pick, makes for some great dronestring lines. Been playing 21 years, 2/3 of my life, and still learngin. Bass is great.
EDIT: as for going heavy, dunno about you, but my Aria as a neck like paper, and I seriosly can't be arsed playing the truss rod game with it ever again, took ages to get it just right :D
And I dunno when the Clones went off the scene, probably about the time NO bootlegs stopped being accompanied by a spaceship interior effect between songs. whhhhrrrrrwwwwwrrrrrrrwrwwwrrrrrrwwwwrrrrrwwwwrrrrrwwwrrr.
Evil things, you can get an impressive noise by jammingthe function selector switch in the middle, turns it into something very like a ringmodulator. If I ever find the cnut who stole mine I'll snap his legs like twigs :D

I love my sixes, but my four plays like butter in comparison. Can't play without a pick at all.
My Starfire could probably take a slightly heavier G, and the Marathon has a neck like a tree trunk, but I'm afraid to try Hooky's gauges - a .050 tuned up to E has over 100 lbs of tension on it. Dunno how he does it. Wouldn't want to snap one of those!
Was your Clone the flange model? Mine has the edge switch, but I may try that trick anyway. Rotten luck yours getting stolen - maybe you should pay a visit to all the Nirvana cover bands in your neighborhood... :evil:

Aye, the one with the chorus/flage selector mounted between the countrols above the stomp pedal (it's been a while). It was actually nicked when I had this ultra clean bass amp, and never realised that the clone was what Hooky used, all I needed was a muckier amp.
And yeah the tension on the 6's neck must be something fierce. Never mind the damage to music history if you twatted it, I seriously doubt you'd survive :D

Hooky used to use a Drawmer noise gate with the Clone. All you need is an amp with a decent effects loop. I use a Peavey Pro Bass 500 and run the Clone through it's effects loop, nice and quite no hiss just that gorgeous chorus we all know and love. The .050 tuned to an E was a typo, it's a .040. You'll never get a .050 tuned to an E.

Well, I rather like, really really fresh strings, ultralight if possible, and a very thin pick, or fingerpicking, there's almost a natural chorus that way.
And the effects loop idea for the clone sounds about right, running a slightly preamped level through it would help the stardrive noise no end.
I rather like Victor Wooten's idea as well (and bassplayers, if you aint heard vic...hear vic! make it your mission), 2 basses, one in standard tune, the other tuned DGCF...which he rather idiotically calls his "tenor bass" DOH!
I have a new bass in my mind's eye, and my current aria is destined for de-fretting, and or the retuning to "tenor".
Surely, ask Chase, Doggy and HSTB would be more appropriate.
I've offered not a lot of sage advice by my usual high standards.
