I have always took it that Barney was singing from the lady's perspective. So I would say no to your question is his character gay.

I took it as being from Jackie Kennedy's perspective. My understanding is that this song is about a (screwball IMO) theory that the bullet that killed JFK was in fact intended for Mrs. Kennedy so that JFK could marry Marylin Monroe.

The comments about 1963 and JFK was just Barney talking generally about the year 1963, and JFK, not the song. There was an online streamed interview at the time Get Ready was released (an interview from GetMusic. To hear the interview just follow this link http://www.getmusic.com/calendar/audiochats/neworder/index.html and click on Hear The Chat Now) and a fan emailed in the question about the lyrics to 1963, and Barney just said it's a song from the point of view of a wife, being shot by her partner Johnny, then him going on to get another wife. The interviewer was a complete twat. Barney explained "1963" lyrics, saying that is a fictitious story about a man who kills his wife and the guy went "It sounds like an Eminem track to me". Really embarrassing.

The description he gives in that book doesn't marry up with the lyrics, as that would mean JFK shooting his missus, then remarrying, wouldn't it?

Hope that clears it all up, once and for all - although I'm sure someone else will be posting this question again in the near future!

I think people can interpret the song anyway they want to. If one person thinks it's about a certain subject or a thing, but the artist says otherwise, stil, that fan has the right to believe in whatever they believe in. Many people might not agree with me regarding the "meaning" of the song, but why does every song have to have one meaning? Why can't it be acceptable for songs to have multiple possible meanings, with some fans believing in one, and some fans believing otherwise?

The lyrics say something about Johnny getting another wife, so at the very least the singer must be the first wife of Johnny, who was shot by him. I guess I thought it a little odd at first to a man to sing from a woman's perspective, but what the heck, it worked for White Town (Your Woman).

Perhaps S-H-O-T is analogous to J-E-T...

Anyway, the "another wife" line is what always explained it to me, too.

I've always thought the '94 version's pretty gay, though.

The rumors certainly aren't helped by the cover art for the single. It just screams "Erasure."

I liked the cover art for it, but Arthur Baker's remix and the video were crap. Anyways, who cares about what it might mean. We all have our own opinions as to what the song may be about.

You mean "androgynous"? A lot of their songs don't mention any gender at all, and songs can mean different things to different people, regardless of whatever gender or sexual orientation the actual singer may be.

The question itself is from the mouth of one of my mates (we were doing a bit of music, the shuffle on my iTunes came up with 1963, and as soon as it came up with the "he used to think of me" line he screamed "AAAAAAH HA HA HAAAAA! HOMOS!!!"). But it's interesting, the JFK connection never struck me, thanks all.

(a) all their songs are about gay sex, didn't you know? or (b) the lyrics are mostly just random nonsense that emerges from Barny's drug frazzled noddle, and trying to analyse them is the first sign of madness (The second sign is taking Paul Morley's writing seriously).
