Bollocks.
I hate it when these people compare newer, crappier bands to bands that are clearly better than them.
besides newOrder, UW are my 2nd musical obsession. i know Big Screen Satellites posts here every once in a while and he's the UW number 1 sooperfan! (hey matt!)
the UW/New Order connection also struck me when listening to Dubno for the first time. In my mind, UW is an extension of the newOrder forumula, slanted towards dance but still incorporating rock elements, like guitar and lyrics. Dubno is one of my fav. albums of all time and actually, the new RiverRun projects they've released have been excellent chilling music during the heat of the summer.
UW have a huge set of remixes about to come out with some top names like Robag Whrume, Pete Heller, Pig & Dan, Martinez and more providing the backdrop to Karls ramblings.
Both Karl and Bernard have meaningless lyrics, but at least 1 of the 2 can justify the randomness and WTFness.

I quite like 'em,got Second Toughest In The Infants and Hundred Days Off on CD and EVERYTHING EVERYTHING on DVD,which broke me into them more than Born Slippy ever did.Top concert.CD's are not always that consistent though. Also got to see them perform on the same billing as NO at Manchester Evening News arena one December.

Underworld, in my opinion, are a cracking dance band and clearly quite different from New Order. The article was merely pointing out that both bands have found themselves in similar positions regarding their relative influence on a specific musical genre. Anyone who says that Underworld haven't had similar levels of influence on the dance genre just as New Order have, are talking crap. They are quite clearly BOTH legendary influences in the dance music world and just because your Barney fixation won't let you see anything beyond that doesn't mean it's untrue...
If you're going to have a go at the article willy nilly at least make accurate criticisms eh?

Is that a fact? I've never seen that anywhere. Even their site dirty.org doesn't refer to a breakup.
Ah Underworld. I remember when I first bought 'Underneath the Radar". Lost "Dark & Long" a few times, though. Really slippery cd, and always found its way in my friends stack of stuff.
The true test of a good sound, in my opinion. If it's not getting stolen by friends, it must suck. 
They've been quietly releasing new material via underworldlive.com since last year. That's the RiverRun project mentioned above and it's a lot more reminiscent of Dubno than more recent stuff. Extensive live dates in mainland Europe in autumn as well so they still seem to be a going concern.
I think they're ace. NO and Underworld are both at the top of their respective leagues and I wouldn't ever choose. The Everything Everything DVD is the envy of all my mates as it's now deleted.
I thought Pizza For Eggs and Lovely Broken Things were frankly Gash. Gave them a few listens just to make sure I hadn't approached them in the wrong mood and then deleted them.

Are you sure? 
They played a number of gigs last year in Europe, they've got a soundtrack coming out shortly, and the airm was to play some UK dates shortly...
They've also got some gigs lined up in October, which is not bad for a band who are no longer together as a group, including some dates in South America in November! :p

I'd never think to try and compare them, but Underworld were a perfect transition between new order and laurent garnier at Temptation 98'
That's the only time I've seen em. They really impressed me live, especially KH.

Well i saw Barney at an Underworld gig at The Acedemy in Manchester around 1996 so there must be a comparison somewhere i just cant think of one..... ahh yes, drugs!
I think 2 of them are the originals,but Darren Emerson buggered off before the Hundred Days Off album.

i think before making comments, know the facts... the Underworld crew has been around almost as long as New Order has been New Ordering! maybe no comparison to NO but they do administer top quality sounds and beats!
but, that's IMO.
No point in comparing of course, but UW certainly helped me through a very tough time when NO were not releasing new music ('94-'00), and dubnobasswithmyheadman is still one of my all time fave albums!!

I love underworld...they've had some amazing moments...YOU GUYS....play the original version of Cowgirl really really loud, or get your local dj to play it on the club system....it is so freakin amazing!!!!!!!!!!
since then, they always came up with these wonderful long (and dark) dance tracks, and each one has that magic moment akin to a climax....electronic hooks that are way unique and often adreniline inducing.
I mourn thier demise....as I recall, Darren Emerson left and is solo and the other guy (I forget his name) is still recording as underworld, and another group name as well...I forget all the details

The original members, Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Price, are still together as Underworld, recording and performing to this day - they have *NOT* split up!
Darren Emerson did leave (just after the release of "Everything Everything" (the live album) - if memory serves me correctly) to start the "Underwater" record label. He still DJ's to this day and releases stuff both by him and other artists on the Underwater label.
And, yes, Underworld are *NOT* a new band - they've been going (as Underworld) since 1986 and, before that, recorded as "Freur".
So, now, you know! 
I don't like comparing different bands to each other as every credible (not manufactured or in it for the money) band always has a sound or something about them which makes the listener like them or hate them.
For me personally Underworld are along with New Order one of my favourite bands but I like them both for totally different reasons. Underworld defined a moment in British/European Dance music within which you could experiment with ideas and create music which was against the music industry establishment's expected norms of Dance music pre-1988 (i.e. not a dodgy session singer singing over dodgy Hi NRG soul or even worse Stock, Aitken & Waterman (sic) etc. tosh!) Everyone's different (some of you will like bands I absolutely detest!) but if you like the dancier stuff New Order have done I defy you to listen to say Rez, Cowgirl, Dark & Long (Dark Train), Skyscraper I Love You, Dirty Vegas, King Of Snake, Pearls Girls, and even though it was done to death with Trainspotting Born Slippy without at least admitting that they along with Orbital RIP, Leftfield RIP, Chemical Brothers, Faithless, etc. have at least made people sit up and take notice of quality Dance music and steer the agenda away from record company fat cats who pimp every innovative genre of music from Jazz to Rock to Hip Hop to Electro to Rave to Dance over the years.
Unfortunately I haven't downloaded the Lovely Broken Thing or Pizza For Eggs stuff Underworld have done so can't comment on that (hope to do so soon) and look forward to hearing their contribution to the soundtrack of the forthcoming Breaking And Entering film. Cheers!

100% agreed... underworld deserves much respect. i know this is a new order board, but really, many of you have got to start considering other points of view and histories of music. it reminds me of someone else's thread recently bemoaning about how new order is not his rock & roll history text book. believe it or not, there's other great music out there besides new order, whether in the history books, underground or wherever.
for me, underworld were also there at that pivotal point when new order and side bands weren't there, just like a previous post said. they truly pushed electronic music and are so influential. i still shudder everytime i hear the opening chords to Rowla. it's fucking fantastic.
Dubnobass ,Second Toughest and Beacoup Fish are top albums.Underworld were probably my favourite band in the mid to late 90s in the absence of New Order.Saw them at the 'Temptation' New Order gig at Manchester Evening News Arena Dec 98.
They ,like the Chems, wouldn't have existed if not for New Order.Well they may have but would have sounded very different.
Lost track of them the last few years though and didnt even buy Hundred Days Off.
