where were you the first time you heard a NO song?

i don't know if we've done this one before, but here goes:

i was in the audience of my middle school's end of the year talent show in 1986 when a group of girls did a dance routine to blue monday. i thought it was brilliant and had no idea who the song was by until i bought substance the following year and, behold!, there was the song i'd been searching for.

other stories?

that would have been in the senior high school "radio" (it played luchtimes via the intercom) room. i believe it was the subculture 12 inch and to me it was the coolest thing i'd ever heard.

As a very young child i remember my Dad playing NO songs. The first time i was aware whrn i was older is when i heard Age of Consent in a skate video

As far as I remember (and this is assuming that bad covers don't count *shame*), the first time I specifically remember hearing a NO song was watching Trainspotting a few years ago. I remembered the song that Dianne sang, but I didn't know what it was--then I got Substance about a year later and thought, Hey, "Temptation" sounds familiar!

That said, when I first listened to Substance, several songs ("TPK," "Subculture," "True Faith," etc.) seemed vaguely familiar, as if I must have heard them before as a wee kid growing up in the 80's. That's one of the reasons I love NO--that sort of familiarity/nostalgic quality some songs have.

The living room in our first house. All I can say is.. orange shag carpeting. Blue Monday. Me dancing. 1983. I wish they'd thought enough to get the Polaroid out to immortalize it.

student radio here in new zealand ,,,i had never heard new order ..its was crystal that got me hooked for life.i must had been about 17 im 20 now ,,,i remember hearing it and closing my eyes and merging with the beauti of the song..this is a good idea for a thread......hello im new here

In the 6th form common room at school, around March 1981, we had just had the school buy a turntable for us, bloke gets out this gold-sleeved 7", slaps in on and...wow...that was the moment the soundtrack to my 80's was defined.

The day that I bought the Ceremony 7in because I liked the cover.

1987/True Faith on Sky or whatever other channel it was, right here in this room, how boring. The circumstance not the song :\ohwell:

At home on a Sunday afternoon watching the now-defunct pop show Countdown in 1983. Saw a truncated version of BM and thought it was the most interesting record I'd ever heard in quite some time.

Knowingly: Blue Monday '83 Unknowingly: Temptation '82, Mike Sweeney's football show on Piccadilly Radio (still remember it!)

Obv knew of LWTUA but didnt know about the connection until got into NO in '83.

Technically, it was the True Faith video on MTV in the 1980's. However, I didn't know who the hell they were and didn't really get into them until nearly 10 years later. I think it was Blue Monday on the radio that time.

I used to tape the Top Forty on Radio 1 every now and again and back in 1982 there was a song called Temptation. Didn't take too much interest until I heard Blue Monday in '83 then everything clicked.

Not much in the US, sadly enough, but in other places, yes.

At home, first half of 81, whenever I managed to finally track down a copy of Ceremony, from the sadly defunct Earth River Record Store.

Probably in bed, listening to John Peel. I'd read that Ceremony was coming out, and that night he played it! Wondrous stuff.

i first heard NO back in 1988 or 1989 when i used to go to Shugzv's house quite a lot,Shugzv used to have his NO records on all the time,but i started to like NO when i heard the Technique album,and still me favorite album since..

At home one night in 1981 listening to the radio and their new single Ceremony was played. Been hooked ever since.

In my grandparents' house, where I was raised. Late summer 1981 (prob. September), I was listening to my favorite radio show in my bedroom. I don't remember which song it was, though...

my bedroom back in 81 , ceremony. i still recall the feeling of being blown away by the opening bass riff. thanks for rekindling the memory woodsy.:)

1981! Got to thank the late great John Peel for that. Used to listen to his show religiously about this time,and he played three songs of Movement album.Liked them,but not enough to buy them at the time......till I heard Temptation! Strange how tastes change. I listen to Movement cd the most regular!

1983, Melbourne.

Just received a new tape deck and was in my bedroom learning how to record tracks off the radio. 3XY - wonder if it still exists? Had the fingers on the buttons, heard the opening machine-gun beats and thought 'this sounds pretty ace'. Ripped it and played the bastard over and over and over and over again for weeks. Still remember my toddler sister bouncing on my bed to it, flying off and cracking her scone on the window sill.

No idea where; must have heard a track from Movement in 81 or 82. Still have clear memory of buying PC&L when it came out.

As silly as it sounds,a school disco-the first one id been to,first year of high school. It was probavly 82. I remember thinking my mates and me looked cool,which if im right we probably didnt,but it was usual mix of stuff (Adam & The Ants,Blondie etc).

The record was Everythings Gone Green,i must have froze on the spot cos it really stood out from the rest of the music (which i didnt know much about) .

I asked the man playing the music (i`d never heard of a DJ back then) what it was about 10 minutes after it finished he was quite good considering i was hassling him,he played about 3 records and let me listen through headphones till i heard the right one.

He wrote it down and i nagged my mum to buy it for me for about 2 weeks. We had no record shops where i grew up,so i had to wait till we went into town.

Still had the same copy until about five years ago,but sadly it disappeared. I was gutted cos it was the first record i ever owned and i`d looked after it for nearly 25 years.

Took me a long time to get into "Movement" too, thought Barney was doing a terrible job of vocals after Ian, but when "Temptation" (and the whole/rest of the "Mini-album") came out all was forgiven, totally blew me away, almost as much as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (almost).

I'm really not sure of the date or which song or anything, only that it would have been when I was young and either in my dad's car or in the living room..... Hmmm thinking back I don't think dad had a tape player in that old car so must have been in the living room of the house where i grew up.:)

Hmm.....must have been at Birmingham

It was an 18th birthday party in Wells, Somerset. The dj had been playing Adam and the Ants and The Beat, Martha and the Muffins, the usual party fare. Then he put on Ceremony, somebody came up to request it and then started moaning that he hadn't put the b-side on instead! Lots of 'wtf's' when it came on but once the drums started people just got on with it.... Didn't find out it was them till a couple of weeks later.

I heart 'Regret' on the radio back in 1993 and thought it was the greatest song I'd ever heard in my life (I still think so today) and went out and bought the cassingle (it was 1993). I then bought Republic shortly thereafter. The next year I bought their 'Best Of...' and put together that they were the same band who wrote BLT and True Faith. Best band ever.

In a airport in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil I was listening to my walkman(some local radio channel) it was 1988 and New Order were going to play in BraZil so they were playing BLT when I heard Bernard´s voice I melted...and still feel the same after all this years. I remember I record the song and heard that about 100 times...

You never heard "Still"? Fact 40 1/8/81 1st Track side 3. Sure I'd heard it elsewhere before that though, Peel possibly? Definitely wasn't in Birmingham, never been in the place (although that is were Still version was recorded). Was totally hooked on Joy Division from the moment I first heard them. Couldn't believe it when I heard about Ian Curtis's death. Bought Movement straight away, but for a while I never thought I'd ever like New Order as much as Joy Division; and to be truthful I probably don't, but their still the best extant band on the planet!

In a shitty bar in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria, one early afternoon in 1990. The MTV was on, I was sitting alone, drinking and watching the telly. Then all of a sudden, the Run video popped up. Halfway through the song they switched the channel - they always do, it's part of the conspiracy. Bit too late - I was converted already. This was the story of when and where I became a fan. I'd heard Blue Monday, LWTUA, True Faith, and maybe other stuff before that, but oddly enough, it was this particular occasion in 1990 that got me. Probably it just takes to be alone and bored and slightly tipsy for the magic to work, dunno.

just after leaving school 82, I was going out with a girl, Louise, her older brother, was at uni and left, in the family home, boxes of 7" singles, in here were some top tunes of that era including ceremony and temptation, played to death and never looked back....

Haven't you just answered yer own question there?!

You listened to Ceremony (by New Order) in January 1981, yet thought it wasn't a patch on Ceremony (by Joy Division) which was released on Still, as you've then rightly pointed out, much later in the year. Not convinced it was August, think it was even later than that.

Think Still was scheduled for August 81 but ended up coming out in the September of that year. There wasn't long between it and Movement, I do know that much.

I do know that the audience recording of the JD set at Birmingham High Hall didn't surface until after Still was released, possibly not until the start of 1982, so nobody had heard the full Ceremony from that gig.

I am prepared to wager that MIMX hadn't heard the JD version in January 1981!

I suppose that i was a child in 1989, it was RUN!

But In the 2000 I heard the song Brutal (Beach Movie Soundtrack) and since that single i lovethem!!

At a party, it was Blue Mnday, I'd heard it before on the radio, couldn't tell the difference between them, PSB or Noel....

The first time I heard Joy Division (knowingly, mind you) it was Transmission and it fuckin spooked me - I was actually afraid of that voice and that music. (I'm not a poof though. ) Unknowingly it was LWTUA and I really liked it - remember being surprised when I found out it was a JD track. Absolutely no idea where.

I'll take you up on that! What are you prepared to BET? Wager: ooh, la-di-da.:) OK, okay, you have me troubled: and I'll admit to being slightly disingenuous, "Ceremony" was the first New Order single I bought, on reflection I think "Dreams Never End" was the first song of theirs I'd heard, also in my bedroom; and definitely on Peel. I'd been a Joy Division fan for a few years beforehand and I'm still 90% certain I'd heard the original "Ceremony" before I heard the New Order "cover". I shall look into it (IE, where/when the hell did I first hear the Joy Division version) and get back to you on the subject. There is more at stake here than I'd care to admit to!

Probably listening to the radio in my bedroom as a 17 year old, when I heard True Faith sometime in August '87. I went out and bought Substance soon after.
