Well I've just watched TOTP2 and seeing 'Transmission' again sent tingles down my spine. Brought back a lot of memories.

They played the Crystal recording till the end this time which was good. If anybody's wondering, the keyboard was a classic Juno 106 synth and there's no way you can get those piano sounds out of one of them - at least you couldn't out of the one I owned!

Good to see The Jam again too. And that D-Train track reminded me of my early nightclubbin' days.

It was a Roland Juno 60,as its got the plastic/wooden end cheeks.Juno 106 had a more blue facia with the sound buttons running underneath the sliders. Apologies if this sounds a bit wank but I've got one sitting behind me ,all midi'ed up and raring to glow.

LOL. The 106 had big, black clunky end pieces, never stayed in tune for long and I loved it. Great bass and string sounds. Sold it to upgrade my stuff to Cubase VST. I could've sworn that it was a 106 on TOTP but I'll take your word for it :)

I never had a 60 but was it midi originally?

In any case, there was no way they were getting those piano sounds out of a Juno!

The Juno 60 came with Roland's DCB interface,which was their own version of midi.Although you could only connect Roland gear to Roland gear.I got mine retrofitted . Ah, I didn't think the 60 was midi proper as that's why I got hold of the 106. Is that an SH 101 and an 09 I spy too? I never had a 101 but I did have an 09 - non midi, monophonic, analogue heaven! It looks like you've got a 909 too...

All I've got now is a JD800 an Akai S3000XL and tonnes of plug ins for the VST.

Fucking monotone piece of crap that was only good for a half decent bass sound that disappeared over night even thought the knobs were in the same place. Didn't know you were into music i.e. into making music. Synths/New Order/making music... delicious combination.

For what its worth - the first band I was in had an Amdrum i.e. a drum machine for an Amstrad computer, an SH101, a Casio CZ5000 and CZ101 and an Insta-piano. First song we did was Your Silent Face.

I've now got a small studio (just about all my money goes on music gear) - answer me this, if you can, and this isn't NO related but what the fuck. Trying to decide what to buy (after saving for about a decade) - Emu E4XT or Kurzweil latest synth - need a good piano sound. Tried the new Roland synth of the VS range - what a pile of shite, piano sounds were wank and the synth stuff was just as bad.

Yes, I've been into making music for as long as I can remember. I mucked about with tapes and stuff to begin with a la Cabaret Voltaire and then got hold of my first synth (SH 09) and never looked back! My first sequencer was an Alesis MMT8 (the grey thing with those weird rubber buttons). An absolute nightmare to program quickly and prone to crashing so I upgraded to Creator on the Atari. Now I'm using Cubase VST.

I'm not sure about up-to-date synths as I haven't bought Sound On Sound for ages. Maybe Chris can help? The JD800 has some nice piano sounds and the soundcard I've got (SW1000XG) has loads of nice ones too. I've just flogged an U220 which had a really dirty piano sound on it that was excellent for American style garage. Wasn't there a Yamaha (I think) box a few years back that had the usual duff sounds but had a piano sound to die for? If I remember correctly, you could get hold of one for about 60 quid. Might save yourself some dosh.

SH 101 - what colour did you have? My mate had one and insisted on buying the grip thing and pretending he was a modern day Jimmy Page. Knob.

I'd forgotten about the VL Tone! I had one too - that Trio track with the VL Tone drumbeats on it - what was it now...de da da da or something - what a pile...

I agree about Akai. The S3000XL has never once failed me. Neither did the S950 I had before it. There's some incredible software aroung these days - some of the soft synths are pretty good (the Prophet one springs to mind).

they had a larf at blue monday I had programmed into the seq. one of my mates even played a bit of hooky bass over the top, was a good weekend.. surprising how many non NO fans know NO tunes when they hear a few notes..

Haven't bought it, saw it at £1200 and now its £600... shall be buying that when its about £300 less than a year after its release. Fucking Cubase VST is a piece of magic, bought my dad the Cubasis (the lite version) for his Christmas present last year as I had an offer so I got it for about 20 sheets (incl. the box etc.) - unbelievable power on my dad's PC. I'm an Apple man myself but lets not start on that bastard.... well, no, I won't.

I've always wanted a JD800... did you know that was the keyboard used on Regret? - very noticeable on the New Order version on the cassette single release... check it out, lovely keyboards at the end of that bastard.

For my birthday my girlfriend Claire bought me an annual subscription to Sound on Sound... sex and my favourite magazine... you can't beat it.

That was the band,Trio.Couldn't remember it to save my life.Fucking corker of a track,in a kitch kinda way.I've also got the handle grip and strap for the SH101.First time I saw it used was on "Cheggers plays Pop".Vince Clarke used it when performing 'Only You' with Alyson Moyet when they were called Yazoo.I wasn't a big Depeche fan but loved Yazoo.His electronics,her voice.Heaven.Just like N.O. Chris... the bigger SOS gets the better. We are not alone (not wanting to alienate the rest of the gang) - Barney also reads such magazines. I saw an interview with him recently and the question was what do you read? - journo expects a cool answer and Barney says, nowt really, just synth magazines.

CZ101 - I could program a sound that said 'Guy' like a human voice through a vocoder and 'Yeeaahhh' - mind you, it did take me about 6 months. Shit bass sounds on it though - was like bashing a carrot on a tin.

Nicolas; the audio of 'Transmission' as repeated on TOTP2 (but actually from BBC2's 'Something Else' programme) is available on the JD BBC Sessions CD so no need to mp3 it. The video of it is on the Polygram 'Neworderstory' video which may or not be still available.

As for 'Crystal' on TOTP that was miming so all you really need it the video of it. I could have digitised it but my Mac with a video card in went bang so I can't.

For the life of me I can't remember the name of the 60 quid piano box. It wasn't rackable and was about the size of an MT 32 (now I'm sure NO have used a tweaked version of that spacey pad sound off that nifty bit of electronic jiggery pokery). I think Future Music did a piece on it a while back...

Cubase VST is awesome. My mate kept pestering me to upgrade and I finally went round his house to check VST out and was blown away. Masterly plug-in compression, fantastic eq, recordable slider levels....the list is endless.

I didn't know the JD was used on Regret. Great Synth - loads of sliders to twiddle with! - and theres quite a few sites on the net with downloadable patches. Heavy mother though and HUGE!

Huntsman and Andy, I've dug out all my old mags,no not 'those' ones,old copies of 'Electronics and Music Maker aka EMM,Sound on Sound,Future Music and The Mix. Andy - MT32 - me mate who sold his SH101 went on to buy an MT32 and fucking hell did we gather round when he brought that fucker home. You'd have to say it was the first time you could buy something from the shops, get it home and think - well there's the record right there. Orchestral blast was awesome. I got a Roland D10 at about the same time which was 8 part multi-timbral 'WITH' a separate drum machine belted on for good measure. Was well chuffed when the 'Fantasy' sound was used on Vanishing Point. I kid you not, the preset 'Fantasy' sound was off the D10 untouched from its original settings and used on that there song. (the bit where the music stops and that high pitched synth sound kicks in). Could never quite get the same bass drum, snare, hi-hat, bass sound, string sound, guitar sound or digital fx off the same machine... but boy that Fantasy patch was a dream.

I had a D110 for a while - wasn't that a D10 in a box? I always had trouble with the MT32 losing the sounds you programmed. There was a stupendous pad sound on it that was perfect for drum & bass stuff. Ah, happy days...

I don't suppose anybody wants to buy a Quadraverb and a Microverb II? £120 the lot...going, going...

i've got the future music with the interview with johnny marr on raise the pressure. interview was not as in depth as i wanted it to be. magazine also has a feature on omd if anyone cares.

Roland put that sound on all their gear then,most notably the D50, a classic synth of our time.It was one of the most used presets,and the Yamaha DX7 bass sound,as used on 'State of the Nation" also. If you watch the Academy video,most of the gear used is Yamaha ,synths,sequencers and drum machines. BTW,the drum macine used on Blue Monday was a Oberheim DMX,which went on to cult status along with the Roland TR-808.Both these machines did extensive service during the "electro" period circa- 1982 to 1987. Apparently N.O.'s DMX was given away in a competition in the NME,or Sounds.Wonder who'se got it now? Must be worth a bit.

That is fucking hilarious, Liv :) I think I just shat myself,otherwise known as doing a "Huntsman" BTW,you remind me of the girlfriends of the blokes who came in the music shop where I used to work.They were bored shitless and sat on the leather sofa while I demo'ed the gear to their nearest and dearest.

Andy - it was only a matter of time before somebody banged their gear up for sale. Fucking hilarious this website. From TOTP 2 to the sale of a Microverb and the mighty Quadreverb, a true classic. I've got a pal who runs a studio - I'll give him a bell today, he usually buys gear at that price and he'll be keen to add a couple of choice cuts to his rack - is the Quad a Quad+?

Cheers Huntsman. It's just a normal Quad. The Microverb II is the small thing (about the size of a car radio) not one of the rack mounty verbs. Real cheap and nasty verb - great stuff!
