I only know the exact date because the first Peel session was broadcast on Valentine's Day 1979!
Sometime around the broadcast of the first Joy Division Peel session. 1978 I guess or thereabouts. I am one of the old farts in the age/sex poll.:\ohwell:
if its to the day then the september 79 airing of "something" else ,,, took my breath away,,, saw them live for the first time the next month at manchester appolo.
that said sister janet had bought unknown pleasures and transmission before me and ihadt heard them!!!

There used to be a good radio show in Dallas that played "alternative" stuff as it was called at the time. I remember hearing Joy Division in late 1979. This led to me begging my mom to take me to Dallas to my fave import record store to buy a copy of Unknown Pleasures. Was quite sad when the DJ announced Ian's suicide. I thought, well, there's a band I'll never get to see. I was pleased to read about New Order's start, but, other than Blue Monday, I didn't get more seriously into them until Low Life.
1983...i was in LA, when i was in a bus and i heard Blue Monday. Never i won't forget that day!!

Since my freshman year in college. Why, oh why does the college have smashing music that small town America hides from me?
Around July '87 - time flies yearly 20 years now, when I saw the promo video for True Faith. Don't think it was shown on TOTP however and the whole imagery, music, subject matter of that song was new, fresh and totally against the plastic SAW/Rick Astley etc. Top 40 of the time IMO! Cheers!

Yes!! Did you listen to George too? Funnily enough, after I moved to Dallas and started managing a cool record store, I got to know George and found out what an unpleasant fellow he really is....unless you have something he wants.

I was a fan of True Faith in 1987, but became a fan of the band in 1991 approx.
Those were the days, discovering so much music in so few time...
I was a fan ever since I first heard True Faith in 1987.
Although I didn't notice, my life changed that day.
1995, a bit of an odd time to discover them as they didn't release anything new then. Had heard True Faith the previous year when it was reissued and liked it. It was JD that I discovered first though when Permanent came out - hearing Transmission for the first time did the old shiver-up-the-spine thing just as well as it does now.
Then it was off to the ? best of - the contrast between WIM and Permanent I thought quite funny at the time and still do actually.

1983, aged nine years.
Heard BM and was transfixed. I didn't know until True Faith that they were actually from Manc. I always thought they were American because of the videos, particularly BLT and Confusion. But when I did find out it made it all the more special because it coincided with acid house, clubbing, Madchester and me being old enough to enjoy it. Some people talk about the swinging sixties, for me life was perfection between 1989 and 1991.
1980 someone painted "Joy Division" in huge white letters on a wall at high school when I had just started. Then when me mam let me go to footy with me mates and you get in with the naughty boys it sort of fell together that following rovers home n away and listening to new order went hand in hand for some strange reason.
Probably the aggresion on Brotherhood and LowLife albums helped to increase that bond, and attending gigs with your mates there was always the threat of violence.
FIrst record was BM 12" purchased from Marys Music in Accrington centre. It was scratched to buggery so took it back for replacement. Funny thing was as a 12 year old kid i felt a bit ripped off when i played t'other side and it was the same song without words! Lazeeeeeee buggers!

Yep, I swear she must've listented to Blue Monday more than enough times.
After a while [er, most if not all of my life] I really got into the music, and what brought me full tilt was WFTSC. Afterwards I bought Substance [both NO and JD], and became thoroughly addicted, for a lack of better words.
Early last year I bought Substance [JD edition] and got addicted quickly. Then came Permanent, then Closer, and UP, and Still, and CBBCS [Complete BBC Sessions]...
So it took me over 23 years to become a fully converted JD fan, and that very lifetime to develop my full-swing love for NO.
[Though I'll humbly admit, I recall the first time I saw the video for TF. I was only a kid at the time, and when I saw Steve on the drums, I pointed at the t.v. all cutesy and giggles and actually asked Dad, 'Daddy, who is he? He is very cute. Does he go to my school?'

v impressed at all these people who have been a fan of New Order since a few years before they started.... 
- Saw the video for Run on MTV and that was it. Probably the only time in the history of mankind when MTV has ever been on the right side.
Quite liked a few tracks off MOVEMENT when Radio 1 class DJ John Peel played them for the first time,but thought it was a bit doomy to go out and buy.Silly sod,love that album now.
But it was 1982 TEMPTATION which got me into them.1st album of theirs I bought was LOW-LIFE,on Factory cassette in its white library-style box.Played it to death.

I've been a fan for a fairly short time - since 2005, when my mom bought New Order Collection when I was 15. The moment I saw/heard True Faith I became instantly hooked. :) I really wish I was exposed to NO earlier, it's so much better than all the 'music' you hear on the radio...

1982 - after reading an interview in smashHits with Gillian - didn't get to hear a song till BM in 1983 - but i was already hooked
good to see so many post-2000 votes - there's life in the ol'dogs yet!
Too long to remember, but I became a Peel devotee in 1979 when I got a little clock radio. Really remember the Festive 50 in 1980 when JD took over and I still have a scratchy old mono recording of the F50 in 1981 where NO made their first appearance. Still can't believe Procession didn't do better than 48th though!

25 years...since 1983, when i heard blue monday for the first time. I was 9...oh god...i'm getting older 
Since I got agift certificate for Christmas and bought the Singles collection because the art work was cool..
Then I bought Movement (big mistake),Substance (WIN), PCL ( )and Low life (Goodgood!) and the rest sort of fell into place

1985, brother brought home pirate versions of Lowlife and pc&l. I was only 12 and been obsessed since. They were the 1st band along with Jesus and mary chain i got really into. And although I love and still love the Mary Chain New order changed my life and broadended my musical tastes, started my love of dance music, especially detroit techno.
87 when I stole my sister's NO Substance tape... I think it was the frogs on it that did me in (I was 12)
Bought JD Substance, but didn't likeit so it sat for years. Permanent came out and jump started my interest in them.... JD's Substance really isn't a good starting point I learn later on:\ohwell:
- i was about 12 years old when i first saw the video for 'true faith' (surprise, surprise), and i was fascinated. i bought substance and realized i knew some of the other songs on it, as well.
I don't know if fan would be the right word. I do know New Order and or factions thereof opened and closed the decade with its 2 finest songs (more or less) - Love Will Tear Us Apart and Getting Away With It. Days, weeks, months were awash in drugs, debauchery, taking the piss out of everyone, getting lucky more than twice, and taking the decade in the this aftermath of underachieving to level their entry into mid life crisis.
As the lady said, "they couldn't care more, they couldn't care less". I concur. PC&L and Technique will always be my fondest music to memories of good times.
Since I first heard their 1st John PEEL session in early '79. I was stunned by the performance ! Been ever since. Really got them when 'Unknown Pleasures' came out, 'cos here,pre-June '79,it was near impossible to get their 3 only releases at the time ('An Ideal for Living' 7"+E.P. and FAC2-'Sampler'). I believe I became a true fan in 1983, so it has been 25 years for me. I was 18 years old. They became my favorite group after hearing The Perfect Kiss and seeing the video. For some reason I was just mesmerized by that video back then! That has remained my favorite song since then. I think it will always be. :)
It was 1994 for me, with the death of grunge here in the States, New Order's "Best Of" shone a light through the dark tunnel of the music scene for me then, not unlike their own journey out of their own darkness. The music just felt right for me at the time. This is for years having heard New Order's music without knowing who they actually were too. Finally finding their place in the history of music with that album, combined with the fact that they were Joy Division (who coincidentally I started discovering around the same time) opened up a whole new world for me and I've been a fan every since.
