I realise this really is a 'newbie' question but i'm just wondering what the differences were between the initial Limited edition 5 disc release and the normal 4 disc one? Was it litereally just the extra cd that was inside it? As far as I can tell the packaging and even the barcodes etc are exactly the same? Was the extra disc just slipped into the packaging? wasnlt produced any differently or anything?

Its just I would like the 5 disc version but it is much more expensive to buy then the 4 disc version but I know a friend who I could get the extra disc from? If you had the 5 Disc version but lost the extra disc would there be any other way to tell that u originally had the 5 disc version? Yes I realise this is pedantic but would just like to know any differences. Thanks in advance!

Disc 5 is the only difference, it is a separate disc containing extra tracks. The other 4 are the same whether you buy the 4 disc or 5 disc version.

the only difference is the extra disc...

otherwise, they are exactly the same...

Actually, now that THAT has been brought up...

anyone know where I can pick that up? Particularly the 5-Disc version?

Its probably easier to buy the 4 disc version then on ebay u can ussually get the extra disc sepereately. is by far the cheapest way to do it.

To think I have 4 of those

2 UK and 2 US editions.. some still shrink wrapped! and all with bonus disc.

(Sorry, packing stuff, so I just noticed)

I just want the one! Really surprised there isn't more differences, if your gonna do a limited edition version would have thought they would ahve done more then just slip a cd into exactly the same box and set! oh well, looking forward to getting which ever.

The reason it's just an extra disc rather than a completely new packaging etc is that the extra disc came about from pressure from here, and was organised by the band and friends as a little bonus. It wasn't scheduled to be part of the release, but came about as a nice little unexpected touch.

actually i got the 5-disc edition... a fried of mine gave it to me as a birthday present... and i dont know where could he get it!!

and let me tell you something... you can see the value that the 5th disc has after you realise that it has the version of The Perfect Kiss played alive during video shot... essential!

Are you based in the UK? If so try your luck at HMV or Virgin as they still have a few floating around and I suppose it wouldn't hurt them to open one up to see if it's got the extra disc. If not ebay's your best bet. Hope this helps. Cheers!:thumb:

Despite the fact it looked and sounded like it was thrown together in about 2 minutes :nonono: After 20 years it was slightly disappointing Retro5 was the best they could muster in terms of a rarities release.

Temptation '98 and TPK Video Shoot were both welcome but the rest is a bit random and average (keeping in time with the box-set then) plus I don't think I've ever made it through the 18 minute version of Elegia in one sitting.

Got mine on E-Bay for about £20. Fifth disc I like because it's got the extended ELEGIA and the rather superb SUCH A GOOD THING. It's not a bad box set,it's tried to do everything, live stuff, remix stuff, but yeah I wished there were more rareties on there.PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE? SABOTAGE? TURN THE HEATER ON?

It's a piss poor excuse for a boxset IMO. Maybe good for new fans but how many new fans would bother shelling out £40-50 on boxsets? They're more likely to buy something like International or Singles.

Considering the target audience for a New Order boxset is - funnily enough - life long New Order fans then compiling Discs 1 and 2 with tracks already found on all the albums wasted half of it straight away. Disc 3 mopped up tracks for those who didn't bother with the single remixes but still, alot of people had these already. Finally, did Disc 4 really set anyone's world on fire? Let alone the hardcore gig archivers?

I think the problem with Retro was that the band themselves didn't give a toss about it and even admitted as much in interview at the time. As the band obviously couldn't be arsed the whole project floundered massively with nobody around to steer it (Gretton).

Getting their quasi-celeb-mates in to compile it was a crap idea too.

They should've gotten the record label to delay it until a time when they actually gave a toss

I can't even do the 5 minute version, or a live take! Bastards even used to open with it so we couldn't get the beer break in for fear of losing the good spot down the front!

Maybe true, but then wasn't it us (as fans) who kept asking for it to be released for god knows how long?? I don't know, you lot won't be happy, even if we get "The Happy One", "Perfect Kiss" (full 12" mix), and god knows what else everybody's been asking to be released!!! :p  :smoking:

Gretton's Recycle project would've been much better. Box-sets are primarily for hardcore fans and Retro's only redeeming features were the live disc and the bonus disc. That's two out of five - poor. Recycle would've been the quintessential box-set and really given something back to the fans. It would also have been in keeping with New Order's original ethos. Factory would've given the OK for Recycle; I guess that's the difference when you sign to London Records - or whoever they are. Also bloody lazy on the band's part. New Order don't look after the fans.

Considering the target audience for a New Order boxset is - funnily enough - life long New Order fans blah blah blah...

You have to remember people like me who had old vinyl and tapes and a few cds of New Order. I'd seriously lapsed my interest a while before Retro came out - I didn't even buy Get Ready. Retro reminded me of their depth and breadth and rekindled an interest in seeing them live. In particular, the live disk was the most-played in my car, closely followed by the Fan one. I started to fill the gaps in my collection and get back into the band.

So it worked for me

As I said, it was good for newer fans wanting a reasonable snapshot of the band or for twats like you wanting to catch up :p

But in the rarities stakes it sucked, no question

That's what boxsets are meant to be about, aren't they?

What's the point in putting tracks on it you can already find on albums in the shops?

Hey! if I can sit through the 5 minute Elegia and the 22 minute Vid 586, than there's more than enough reason for me to be able to sit through the full Elegia! :nono:

New order have always done things the way they want to, and for themselves not for us......... if you want to be "looked after" by your favourite band, you need to change band because NO won't cuddle you and keep you warm.

Wish there had been some more variety between the Discs of the Tracks chosen. Also that the Live Disc had been focused more on the Earlier years. Knowing that some of from this site were @at the shows is ace.
Enjoyed it, gave it a few weeks play then a Friend !took it.. as his decided early XMas prezzie :nonono:  that year. Temptation think Brixton '01 is good value.

The rarities disk could have been so much better (and how 'bout the caribinaire (or however the f*** you spell it) mix of WIM instead of the same 2 mixes that have been released _twice_ as singles already). But the first 3 disks weren't a _complete_ loss, they were noticably remastered (is it just my copy or does the cd edition of brotherhood sound _really_ weedy compared to the vinyl? Whatever possessed me to flog off all my NO Factory vinyl lps?)

I had been thinking about buying this for some time but I've seen it around and left it, simply because (agreeing with Ally) there doesn't seem to be much in the way of rarities. I've got an almost complete vinyl collection and have filled in gaps with remixes on CDs etc. I think it might have been better to put out a live anthology- say 5 complete concerts spanning their whole career... Or is that just me living in cloud cuckoo land:brow:

Ouch! I thought about selling all my stuff on eBay for a while but I like to have the odd sad night in alone playing all the vinyl A's and B's in order... I know, I need a life :dj:

I can't see the need to properly release live albums these days, it really limits what you can do plus the market is very limited, so it's hardly worth it.

What a lot of bands do is make available live shows on nicely packaged CD-R runs via mail order or as downloads, this can be done for a greater number of shows than if you went down the route of releasing a live album for the shops.

LTM was in talks to release one of the US 89 gigs. Seemed to basically depend on a yay or a nay from the Barnster. Think it's still on ongoing concern - last time I saw him he said it wasn't completely dead in the water, though was on its last legs.

Shame, would've probably been his biggest ever seller.

EDIT: Actually, thinking on, it's an absolute age since I last saw James so I guess it is dead in the water.

No doubt we'll get some crap ACR 83 China type release off of JN while BS chews it over, or better still a double cd of Section 25 last year:laugh:
