I want a NEW Joy Division Material!!!

I am aware that Joy Division will release a re-masters version of their old album/s in around 2 months. For me, it’s the same thing. They may add demo and/or live songs, but let’s face it, there are hundreds of JD bootlegs out there. I’m not saying that I prefer the bootleg, but what I’m saying is, it’s the same thing.

The last official JD releases are all live albums or sessions that are old material. Re-fractured Box, Fractured Box, and the Complete BBC Recordings are all recycled materials plus bonus tracks. And I’m not sure if Les bains douches and Preston live albums were released as bootlegs before their official release, nevertheless, their live material is almost the same thing from one venue to another.

So what do I mean by a new JD material? Obviously, the band is dead. What I mean by new material is, I want a JD album full of 12" versions of their songs. Yes! Just like the New Order Substance 1987 album. At least 5 to 10 minutes of their songs, on an average of 6 to 7 minutes long.

So what are the tracks to be included here? Something like the 2 7-minute versions of Love Will Tear Us Apart (that I really like), the Trouser Enthusiasts Remix (7:03) and the Literal Mix (6:55) that appeared in the 1998 DJ Remix bootleg album in the US titled "Ultra Hot Art Disc 2." Also, These Days is a good track to mix on, also Isolation, Transmission, Digital, She’s Lost Control (can be the original or US 12” Mix), and even album tracks like Insight, Dead Souls, Leaders of Men, etc.

I don’t think that non-electronic songs are hard to remix. In fact, during the new wave era, a lot of non-electronic songs have extended versions. There are lots of them, but two classic examples that I really really love is the Mustapha Dance (Rock the Casbah) by the Clash and A Way by the Bolshoi (that has lots of remix versions).

So who will mix it? I’m sure that there are hundreds, or even thousands of DJs out there who would love to volunteer and mix a JD track or two and make a name for themselves. Just make sure they don’t change the song or beat entirely. I really prefer the Razormaid and Hot Tracks DJ subsciption services, for they don’t change the beat of the song.

I think it is just appropriate for Joy Division, the “mother group” of probably the artist with the most number of remixes/versions of their songs (I’m of course referring to New Order) to have their tracks remixed as well.

So what are your thoughts on this??

What you want is an after the fact house remix album. JD only really had one 12" single that was different ("She's Lost Control"). The Joy Division Substance WAS a singles compilation. There already has been a tribute album like in 1995. There have been unofficial remixes the last two decades.

Really, I see no need for this. It sounds like a Joy Division version of the The Rest of New Order, but without any ready material really, just throw some money at some producers type of idea and see what sticks.

With all the Joy Division hype there may be more tribute comps. and who knows they may re-release a single with remixes. But I would hardly get all that excited.

Last year they released an album which was full of remixes of every single JD track for which the original 24 track[1] tape still exists. Co produced by John cage it also featured the band's take on his classic "4 minutes and 33 seconds".

I was at a mate's house party a few weeks ago and this yank girl turned up wearing the UP t-shirt. I got nattering to her about JD and how seminal they were (Closer my favourite album of all time and all that) after about ten minutes of yabbering I noticed that she had absolutely no idea what the feck I was on about. So, I mentioned her t-shirt and how it was the cover for UP and she said she didn't even know it was a band tee- she just liked the pretty squiggles. I went off her a bit after that.

Like the idea of a JD shirt tally, though. I might start my own log down here in Brighton where every young trendy tosser in skinny jeans with Flock of seagulls haircuts seems to wear em.

To be honest, I was much happier when my JD horizons were limited to UP, Closer, Still & Substance... Now I find myself downloading alternate versions and live nonsense and it's just not the same... I don't really see why anyone needs anything more, when I could just sit and listen to side 1 of UP all afternoon...

Yeah, but don't you find yourself wishing that it had a title, like the sides of Unknown Pleasures? Fair ruins it for me, that does. Having to call 'em Side One and Side Two, it's just not the same.

Now, if only someone could kind of remix the labels to give each side a snappy title, like - say - Live Side and Dead Side or something, then we could all buy it again.

It would be interesting to hear a remix of "4 minutes and 33 seconds" - Orbital tried it with a mix of "Are We Here?", but somehow failed! :p
