Fats Domino and "Blue Monday"... ?

This was in the paper today, a syndicated "light" news item.

New Order frontman Peter Hook was reading about Fats Domino while writing this song. "He had a song called Blue Monday," Hook said, "and it was a Monday and we were all miserable, so I thought, 'Oh, that's quite apt.' Blue Monday is credited -- for better or worse -- with starting the synth-pop wave in America during the early '80s."

Well, at least New Order got a mention in an American paper.

Well, at least New Order got a mention in an American paper.

Even though New Order may be defunct at right now, they still released material throughout the 90s and 2000s and had hits as well. Here in Japan, they performed at the Fuji Rock Festival (major Japanese music festival featuring lots of big name foreign bands) in 2001 and 2005 although I didn't have the chance to see them play live. It's sad that in America they tend to be regarded as an '80s band' or something of the sort.

Here in the US New Order is regarded as a pretty important, pioneering alternative indie electro band, one of the godfathers. They are definately not thought of as only an 80s band......leave that to the Thomspon Twins.

I know that in 2001 and 2005 here in Columbus Ohio, Crysta, GIAUE and Jetstream were pretty popular in nightclubs, I heard them played frequently.

I mean.....to the average person on the street who doesnt know much about music, they might seem just an 80s band.......but most people I encounter in general generally have a lot of respect for New Order.
