With the chances of seeing New Order back on stage or in the studio again in near future turning to zero (if i follow the reads, shouts, comments and talks of the hookster, sumner and others lately) i have been thinking of NO live a lot the last few days.

They where/are a great band live who had their moments but alos manage to fuck up on stage pretty good..

So let's go down memory lane: my question for you boys and girl around here is what is/was in ur memory the best live-version song/moment on stage for NO (u know the score, the band in form and some songs really stand out then) and what was their biggest live fuck-up in a song?

I remember having a tape a live-gig in Dublin or Glasgow in 85 or 86 and haearing a storming version of Blue Monday..blew me socks off...

Let's hear it:clap:

Great topic!

As the glass is half empty at the minute I'll start with the fuck ups:

Chosen Time at Atlanta 1985, Gillian in wrong key on keyboards, both Hooky and Barney tried to adjust their parts accordingly but failed spectacularly

LWTUA at Birmingham 1983 - the song's NO debut, and it seems that nobody had taught Gillian the keyboard line

Leave Me Alone at Gloucester 1984 - it took Hooky nearly a minute into the song before he remembered the bassline - we all thought it was another new one before he finally remembered it with a big grin

Guilty Partner at one of the 1998 shows - it collapsed around them after only 30 seconds

Hurt at one of the 1982 Belgian/Dutch shows, the sequencer keeps stopping every minute or so and they kept trying to restart it, it got out of time and the whole thing was a right mess

And the sublime moments when they really were the best band in the world:

Decades at Royal Festival Hall 1984 - I still get goosebumps to this day hearing the drum pattern start up

Perfect Kiss at Athens 2006 - totally unexpected return to the set after 13 years out. It wasn't the full version, but all the same it was the most fantastic moment.

Love Vigilantes at Old Trafford 2002 - they played it for us, very unexpected and very welcome

Sister Ray at Malvern 1986 - with the entire Happy Mondays on stage as well!

Having only seen them live two times I'd have to base my picks on bootleg/live recordings, but I have two.

The Chapter III bootleg (Pier 84, New York, August 25, 1987 - my 17th birthday) was mastered from cassette just a tad too fast, putting everything in a higher key and adding a real sense of urgency. As such, the versions of Bizarre Love Triangle, Everything's Gone Green, and The Perfect Kiss remain my favorite live recordings (despite the poor audio quality). In fact, this bootleg was the first time I'd heard New Order live.

At some gig in 1983 (which I have a bootleg of but can't recall the title) the band took the piss out of Divine/Bobby O. by singing Love Reaction over Blue Monday. I thought that was funny.

Hearing Joy Division classics at Reading 98 was a big highlight, as was TEMPTATION taking us into 1999 at the Ally Pally. First gigs are always ace, and seeing them play 1963 at the NEC always stands out.

Guilty Partner at the MENA in 98 was funny as they fcuked it at the first attempt.

Would love to have been old enough for the Byron Bay shouting version of WEIRDO. And I wish I had enough money to have heard the SHOUTY take of Krafty in Portugal the night after we were in Barca.

Two gigs (of many) I wish I could have been at were Reading 89 and Finsbury 87. Collecting bootlegs from the age of 13 and hearing the banter, usually from Barney, was always a highlight an all.

Also being lucky enough to have been at the HALL OF FAME night with several of the other VIKINGS. Cheers Nicos  Oh, and the PEEL TRIBUTE

I could go on, but I cannae be arsed......I think I am tuRnIng IntO RocKET MiCk.

Hooky's dedication of Ceremony to Phil Grubb at the Manc Apollo takes some beating. He worded it absolutely perfectly, and even included Welshcake in his words as well. Makes me well-up just thinking about it.

Darren and Phil's Mum also passed away from cancer one month later and they played 'Ceremony' at her funeral for her as well.

The Tourette Mix of Krafty that Shug mentions was one almighty fcuk-up, worth it just for the looks on Hooky and Phil's faces. I honestly thought the gig was gonna capitulate there and then, but Barney brought himself back from the brink soon after. Funny as fcuk at the time though.

The atmosphere at the World Cafe gig (channel4 thing), even though we knew we weren't getting anymore was great:thumb:

I did something for the very first time in the TOTP studio before they performed Fine Time  and that was a great moment for me at the time.

I think it was guilty partner they screwed up at glagow secctsay gig in 88, although it might have been dream attack at that time- same reaction though BS- "sorry that was piss"

My first ever N.O. gig at the Hac' in Dec' 85 & getting a new, unheard song ( for me anyway ),as my live introduction, the song being AIIWIW,& watching in open-mouthed awe & admiration ( well,as much as I could in what was total fookin' carnage near the front ),as Hookys' six-string took me to another place.I've never heard it better live.Ahhh,heaven....

The worst & most embarrassing is definately Guilty Partner at the M.E.N. in '98,mentioned a few times already.Funny, but a shambles:laugh: :thumb:

Greatest moment...

Futurama Four at Deeside (which is NOT in Scotland as the Concert Browser states) - first gig, right at the front, Ultraviolence booming out around the icerink!

Fuck Ups...

many, varied and all part of the joy! Sequencer failures at the start of Sooner Than You Think, Hull City Hall springs to mind though.

And didn't they fuck up the start of Regret that night and had to start again. Couldn't believe they came on so early that night.

My greatest memories of seeing New Order live are:

  1. Decades - Royal Festival Hall 1984. Those who were there will know exactly what I mean ...

  2. Everything's Gone Green - Brussels 1981. The first time they had played it, and the true New Order sound was born. The experienced was enhanced by an ongoing 'encounter' during the gig with local girl 'Annie' ...

Those were the days.

Fuck Ups

  1. Too many to mention, including the usual: Gillian in the wrong key, and forgetting what to play - Bernard in the wrong key, and forgetting what to play, and Hooky in the wrong key, and forgetting what to play. Sequencers, sequencing incorrectly ...

"At some gig in 1983 (which I have a bootleg of but can't recall the title) the band took the piss out of Divine/Bobby O. by singing Love Reaction over Blue Monday."

This was the AWFUL Brixton Academy gig. The one which was most memorable due to the journalist's moped incident.

What am I saying! Too OLD, and Too MANY gigs! The moped incident was of course at the Tolworth gig, which took place the day after the magnificent Brixton Ace date.

If my memory serves me correctly it was the 'An History of Joy Division' author Mark Johnson?

Best night of my life

New Order were on form that night like never before

oh, and Hyde Park 04 was pretty shocking IMO

The moped was Tolworth, nine months earlier than Brixton Academy! Brixton Ace had been the night before Tolworth.

Best moment - the aforementioned gig at Tolworth and the looks on the bands (and roadies) faces when they realised they'd have to play at least one more song, and me thinking I'd still manage the last bus home - 152 from outside the Red Lion.

Biggest fuck up? 'Jetstream' on 'Tonight With Jonathan Woss' - New Order MIGHT have got away with it, but put Ana Matronic into the equation and no record label would ever touch them again.

Oh yeah, anyone know what happened to the 'Scissor Sisters'? ;)

My first gig, worth waiting 20+ years for too. And my all time personal favourite moment was that night too. When Barney started fumbling around with the chords from TPK over Blue Monday, I actually cried (I was physically destroyed by that point, but I don't think that mattered a fuck).

There are too many great moments, and too many fuckups, so what about those that are both...... The Blue Monday from Barrowlands 85(6?) mentioned by the original poster is BREATHTAKING, all the more so cos it fucked up and fell over first, so a double score there. Somewhere in 85/6 (perhaps Hull perhaps not), the drum machine (which drives the 2 synth parts too) won't play nice on Temptation, constantly stopping and resetting after a couple of bars. Steve and Hooky play on together while Gillian (and maybe Bernard) take a cricket bat to the fucker. When it's sorted, the sequenced parts just drop in SEAMLESSLY with Steve and Hooky, instantly proving not only their unfuckingbelievable timing, but also Gillan's unholy trigger finger (if you've never had to drop a machine in to something that's already playing, by hand, you won't appreciate this, but I bet at least a dozen NOOLer's read that and contemplate it with awe, for they too have faced that bastard of a task).

The aforementioned guity partner, like the Glassgow BM, once restarted, is blissful. Hooky plays like a man possessed, and the whole groove is much better than the studio recording (are there demos or sessions of this track out there?).

On the tech fuckup department, there has to be the sound cretin at Glasto 81 who, upon seeing Hooky knocking FUCK out of some cymbals during IALP, neglected to spot him picking up his bass half way through. The result turns what should be the definitive recording of that piece, into a fucking joke, with a teeny bit of bass being heard though leakage into the drum mics.

Runner up would be Mr Philip Cunningham Esq, earning a whole new world of respect from me by actually breaking a Roland keyboard without using a tactical missile. I got a nice view of Mr Lyons blankly astonished gob as he realised the thing was in fact dead, and saw it turn to....."hmmmmm where the fuck IS the backup". the just gave up on the bugger. That was Bournemouth 06.

Fucked up gig award has to go to the Swedish debacle from 01 or o2, falling over, tuneless basses, pure alzheimer's all round.

Greatest moment for me ever was hearing the PFD version of BM at a church disco, it sounded fabulous......well the first half of it did

Apart from that I am at a loss for a greatest moment (apart from what I said about tpk/BM at the Apollo avoce), it's ALL so bloody good.

Greatest Moments

Manchester Apollo 14th November 2005 Not loved by everyone but a favourite of mine as for me personally I thought they were totally pumped up for that gig! And some Warsaw too boot!:thumb:

Wembley 27th October 2006 An excellent set that night from the lads who looked like they were enjoying themselves - surprising given the impending implosion of NO we didn't see coming a few months later.

Fine Time on TOTP October/November 1988 Barney off his face and NO's take on what was being played in the Hac on prime time telly. Nice one!:smoking:

NOOL Blue Saturday 28th October 2006 2 A great night to round off the Wembley gig and got to meet many a VIKING that night - not sure if I'm still the same after that LOL!:abovelol:

F*** Up's

Liverpool 8th July 2006 I've mentioned this one before so won't dwell on it too much lets say the bouncers - not NO, did their best to f*** this up!

Cheers!:thumb:

This one is so fucking ACE...i got this gig on tape a from a guy from Belgium who was feeding me with NO tapes aorund that time. The quality from that tape was so good (well if you are 15 years old with only one tapedeck in the house everything sounds great) it really, really hit me...this has to be the greatest band on earth i thought...

Amazing stuff...

Futurama deeside was my first NO gig. I cried with joy when they came on. Ultraviolence was awesome. I rember the Wake beforehand and was impressed by the Icicle Works but I can't remember anythign else. It was also where I bought my first bootleg - Birmingham Tower Ballroom I think from a few weeks before.

RITZ81, everythings gone green at the end, the orders first big gig in manchester and barney was off his tits.

HAUS NIED, FRANKFURT 84, 2 coach loads went over to see our heroes and promised 1/2 of frankfurt that they would be on the guest list if they entered by gate c. SKULLCRUSHER was given its live debut , a great moment. FUTURAMA 82. 586, has never sounded better,

FINSBURY PARK they played digital,, nuff said.

WOOLICH CORNET 87 , played atmospher,, bloody marvelous birthday pressie. WEMBERLY87, ceremony never sounded so good.

HAC ,JAN 83, blue monday , bloody hell, that sounded good!

IN BETWEEN,, barney going off on one at salford 85 and smashing his guitar.

WORST?

BLACKPOOL 82 sequencers went off too fast in hurt, they took it in there stride though. MERSEA ISLAND 85. were they ever gonna come on ? t.f.i. friday. 98, barneys fluffed intro to regret and forgetting the words to isolation. ROCHDALE 80, A BAD NIGHT ALL ROUND

ive watched your face for along time.

I totally agree with the Apollo gig Nov 05.

It was the first time I'd seen them in doors for ages and they were stunning.

ACR were ok but New Order were the best I'd seen them for a decade.

Two personal favourites for me :-

In a lonely Place - Glastonbury 81

Temptation - Tower Ballroom 83

Biggest fuck up and waste of time - everytime they drag Blue Monday out :confused2:

Recently- Greatest - hearing Shadowplay and Warsaw at the Peel Gig Biggest f**k up - Hooky going on myspace!

Seeing em in the flesh for the very first time at Birmingham Tower Ballroom October 86 and then being caught up in the mayhem when Sooner Than You Think started up.

Sheffield Roxy gig , June 87

Reading 98

The biggest fuck up?? Unfortunatley they've not done many fuck ups when i've seen them live:\ohwell: There was the fluffed intro to Guilty Partner at MEN Arena Dec 98 but that seemed slightly intentional to me.... missed out on the glory years of them genuinely fcuking up

edit : i guess you could say Hyde Park was a big fcuk up , the whole gig.Didn't seem like it at the time , having the crac in the moshpit .Listening back to the bootleg it IS messy

Has anyone mentioned "I've got a Cock Like The M1" at RFH? Ok, I wasnt even one, but surely the ultimate New Order moment?

For something I've been at, Ceremony and Turn at Brixton in 05. I still think the Brixton gig was superior to the Manc one.

As for biggest fuck up. Ok, the security in Scouse was bad, but lets face it, the band werent especially good either.
