Okay, Ive just been paid and am thinking about buying one the the three re-issues. Ive got all the original albums at least twice, so I'd be buying it for the live disc. The question is which is the best and most worthy of purchase ??
Any opinions ???
GOOD question.Although i usually get EVERYTHING i could not be
motivated enough to buy ANY of these whilst in HMV in MANCHESTER the other week.I think the problem for me is LIVE recordings of JOY DIVISION are VERY HARD to listen to a lot of the time.Maybe it is too many dodgy sounding bootlegs that have tainted my view.When seen in the studio on TV in the 70's
i was always transfixed by them.But i think that if i bought these now i would never listen to them.Maybe i am more aware of how traumatic it is when you have to MOVE your collection from one home to another.So i await with bated breath to hear your lots take on this.

I don't know but i was watching some of Here Are The Young Men again last night.Early 80s VHS .Reminded me of watching all those early 80s Zombie films .Here Are The Young Men has a similar atmosphere to all those VHS Zombie flicks
None of them.
That's my policy, anyway. Already bought the original CDs and the boxed set. I don't see much need in getting a 3rd copy of each album. As for the live sets, until now they were available for cheap/free from tape traders and such. Don't see much point in spending big bucks for them now.
But hey, it's your money.
ULU's the best gig of the three, but High Wycombe and the Factory both have really good sound. You've already got the Factory one if you have the Heart And Soul box set though!

Yes, the gig is short but sweet, and the soundcheck is just that, six part songs they did while sorting out the levels. Interesting versions of Ice Age and The Eternal but that's about it.
I was having the same "which one" dilemma and ended up buying closer because it's my favourite album (ever)... So I wanted to hear it in a newer "clearer" form (not sure I could hear much difference actually- but then my ears have been battered by too loud music monitoring synths on headphones). And I didn't have the ULU gig...
So, I'd have to say Closer...

But first listens to remasters can be deceptive - after all, you're listening for differences, rather than simply noticing them. At some point I'll dig out the H&S and original Factory versions for a proper comparison.

Yeah, I take your point there about aural deception. I did compare the original CD release (I know- I need a real life) with the new one and it certainly sounds louder. I guess I'll just have to wait for the sound of the new one to "bed in"
I'd prefer getting all three, but it will depend more on hopes that they may have big meaty booklets crammed with information accompanying them. Those can, on occasion, be as interesting as the additional tracks. My collection of live Joy Division is scant and limited to what everyone has heard on Still and Heart & Soul. Although I'm anxious to hear more JD live, I've a slight preference for out-takes and alternate versions, or even early development versions and rehearsals of material.
But, back to the questions... yes, I'd get all three. But I defer to Oldmonkey's indications about which is the "one" to buy when buying only one.
I have a few JD bootlegs, and have never listened to any more than once. Im always dissapointed after playing them - poor sound quality, same old songs. So I wont be buying any of the 3 re-issues. Im still recovering after buying the box set!
I put on Preston yesterday for the first time in two years. Didn't actually sound as crap as I remembered it. The energy is great after a PiLesque Heart & Soul. But back to the reissues (sort of)...
Does Hooky have a few tapes from '78, or do they not exist? I feel like the Unknown Pleasures live disc should have been more of a chronicle than a complete gig, since the Factory gig's already been released.
Also, did Something Must Break ever get a live airing?

Preston's great. The band were really fucked off that night, the beer pump was interfering with the sound system in the venue and it was making everything go wrong on what was already a bad night. The promoter and Rob had negotiated what was a pretty shit deal for the band, and the on-stage meltdown didn't help matters, so they availed themselves of the frozen turkeys in the venue fridge apparently!
Hooky said he's not got anything from 78, just that one Warsaw 77 tape from Middlesbrough and the Electric Circus tape.
The problem with which gig to accompany Unknown Pleasures was that the Factory was by far the best sounding of them all, and sound quality is a very big factor. I'd have gone for Futurama or the YMCA personally, but the band thought that the Factory Club was the best sound and closest to how the songs were at the time Unknown Pleasures was recorded.
Something Must Break was played live once, at Canterbury Odeon in June 1979.
i still havent gottten the boxset yet. but i will eventually. and maybe the new reissued still and thas it.
Now that Preston's been mentioned, is there anyone who can't snigger at the 'BUS FOR BURY LEAVES IN 5 MINUTES' segment during Heart and Soul?
I have a question. Is the Hessian sleeve reissue of Sill the standard version, or was I just very lucky? I now have all three vinyls, which I'm keeping minty mint and am still waiting on the CDs.
For some reason the three LPs cost me $76, (roughly $70 US, £30) which is less than Still costs on its own. Even after deducting the deposit I was expecting to have to pay $110. I love it when something like this happens. :)
OK prompted by the limited edition sticker on my Still, I did some research. I think I found what I was looking for.

From what I was able to find out, the limited Box Set albums sleeves are totally devoid of any writing, so it is only a must if you are a total completist. Apparently all you get is a unique box and three plain albums. Even in my book that isn't necessary. The individual reissue albums IMHO are far nicer as they look just like the original thing.
Check the customer feedback.
Any confirmation or otherwise of the above would be greatly appreciated.
If you can afford it buy them all. Print off one of the HMV £5 off vouchers if you spend £50 (or something like that) that crop up on the net. The more the reissues sell the more likely that someone will bang some heads together to get NO reissues out next year?

Got all the CDs, including the shitty LWTUA CD-single, wich has the Don Gehman radio mix f***ed up at its very end, like it was poorly compressed or something. My advice is: stay away from that one if you care about your money.
The albums seem to be ok, although I don´t have any equipment to enjoy the benefits of "remastering"... wich I strangely did when Heart & Soul came out ten years ago. 
The lettering on the Closer booklet is really tiny; be sure to have your glasses on when reading it.
does anyone know if the lps and lwtua are the only re-issues that are going to happen?
a remastered 12 of atmosphere would end things nicely!

Wasn't going to bother, then someone bought me Still for my birthday and it's been great listening as I don't get the old vinyl out as much as I should. The Birmingham set sounds more powerful than I remembered, and High Wycombe is SUCH a great and interesting gig. Very good sleevenotes too. So, for no good reason, I have Closer as well now! I think I'll give UP a miss though - there's just no reason to get it given that the live set is mostly on Heart & Soul.

I kept mine sealed, as soon as someone on here said that they were plain white sleeves... Keeping it minty mint! :)
So, yup, a box set that doesn't have any of the original artwork, despite being advertised as such...
