I've finally seen Control...

i saw it saturday here in NYC. wednesday is the last day they are showing it and i believe its the only place in NYC that has it (film forum) i thought it was good, obviously as a fan you always want to see more, but i think they put the most important parts in it. the rest of the band did come off a little school girlish, lol . i still think paddy consindine was a better gretton, but this guy was not bad at all.

Brillant movie... got a tear in my eye at the end, could have used a bit more background music in some scenes, but I'd live with it.

First time of my life I watch a black and while movie with subtitles in a theatre, I'll survive ;)

Brillant acting from Sam and Samantha... cracking jokes by Hooky and Gretton in the movie...

I enjoyed it a lot more than 24HPP, but it's obviously not the same type of movie.

Now I wish for many DVD extras.

Where did you see it Spotnick?

Saw it on opening night in Berkeley. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was for being a debut from Anton Corbijn. It wasn't Oscar material for the storytelling because it felt 'rushed', but maybe I feel that way because I was more aware of the more full story having read Deborah Curtis' book before. As it is, how much story can you squeeze into 2 hours anyway so the best that can be done is to put the highlights in. What also was revealing were personal letter(s) and situations between Annik and Ian that were shown.. as this was not documented in Deborah Curtis' book.

A few snickers were heard during Riley's "the thing" dance. I didn't think he nailed it, but it was not enough of a distraction for me to really care.

Gretton was shown as a loud obnoxious guy (seemingly very different from the glimpse of him in New Order story) and Barney seemed way more naive and glassy eyed than I'd been led to think he was.

I dug that Gilian was in the movie. :)

i think those were my thoughts too.

i gretton was more mellowed out by the time NO Story came out. he was a very volatile guy, i would think like in the movie or more so as in 24HRPP

Let's go together to Dallas. It's 3 hrs away from me. But like you I wish they released the movie on DVD already - they'll make more money out of it that way. I'm sure somewhere in Russia they already sell DVDs with the movie :)

i think you may be closer to dallas than i am.or same distance from dallas.they just show the movie for one night?

How long do you think it will be in theatres here? I can only go on weekends and I don't see the schedule for Saturday and Sunder for either Quartier Latin and AMC Forum 22. Hopefully, I'll be able to catch it before it disappears.

in NYC it ended yesterday so it was only in theaters for about 21 days, and they extended it a week so it was only supposed to be here about 2 weeks!

Forget DVD.. I'd love to have mine in High Def please.. blu-ray ftw.

It was a nice crowd in Seattle last Sunday afternoon for the 1:45 p.m. matinee. About 50 or 60 people, who laughed at the right bits and some of whom cried at the end.

I'd love to see Tom's documentary and "Control" packaged together on DVD.

I saw it last weekend in San Francisco (I was in town to attend a Jesus and Mary Chain gig). It was playing at the Clay Theatre, not the Landmark Lumiere as listed elsewhere.

I was pleased how well it was done as I'd have gone an seen it regardless. The only nagging thought I had was that the actor who portrayed Ian's friend, Nick, looked way more like a young Barney than either James Anthony Pearson or John Simm. Perhaps he didn't have the musical chops to go for the Sumner role.

Also, the theatre was selling the soundtrack ahead of the street date and although it won't count towards it's climb to the top of the charts, I couldn't resist grabbing a copy.

Die Geschichte: Ross, ein Chicagoer, der sich deutsch innerhalb eines Jahres im Selbststudium beigebracht hat (Respekt!), und der hier in Wien arbeitet, wurde von einem Freund zu diesem Film eingeladen, der Freund konnte nicht und schenkte ihm die beiden Tickets. Ross, noch nicht so lange hier, war kreativ und schenkte sie nicht irgendeinem, sondern suchte im www die groesste NEWorder Fansite (NOOL halt), meldete sich dort an, ging auf Suche, Oesterreich, und pickte mich als den Meistposter heraus, schrieb mir 'ne pm dort, und ich, zufaellig halt, schaute mal wieder dort rein, sah die pm, antwortete ihm, und so kam's. Dabei wollte ich unbedingt in den Film zur Viennale, war aber immer verhindert wegen Kartenkauf, ich wusste nicht, ob ich Zeit fand, und dann dieser Zufall. Echt Spitze! uuuffff --> die Finger gluehen....

Die Viennale fand in mehreren Kinos in Wien statt. Control habe ich im Gartenbaukino gesehen, wo auch die Hauptstation der Viennale war.

Saw it last night in DC-Landmark Cinema Got home at 2-up at 7 am. Worked from 8 am-5 pm. Very TIRED but oooh worth it!!

It was quite good. Really evolved at a leisurely pace. Jim Riley was great at Ian. The movie presented him as a complex person who seemed at odds with himself in all phases. No easy answers were here which I liked. I was held at a distance. It seemed real. Ian just imploded.

The black and white photography really made the depression of Manchester a character how I an said he wanted to get out of Manchester. Just an intense film. I was speechless at the end of the film. This is a band I love with a guy who died young and was watching his disintegration. Whatever helped Ian create is what killed him.

I respected Hooky, Steven and Bernard a lot more after seeing "Control."

Couple of questions I have after seeing it last night - sorry if these have been covered, I guess I should have watched the credits more closely.

Is the roadie with the Mohawk supposed to be Sarge? Is the girl with Steve at the end supposed to be Gillian?

Can't really fault the film at all, though I did find myself looking at the watch a few times. It's quite a haul.

I finally saw Control last night.

Excellent film. beautifully directed, well acted, and a very good character study of Ian Curtis.

It was long...but not long enough.

I enjoyed the way the other members of JD were portrayed. Bernard came off as the dorky, awkward, musical brains of the group, Hooky was gruff, witty, and hilarious. And Steve was...quiet but I enjoyed when he talked about his drum kit. Hah hah.

I also liked how Barney and Hooky were costumed very much as they dressed in the mid to late 80s in certain scenes (Barney is wearing cuffed jeans, jean jacket, and Fred Perry polo shirts in some scenes, while Hooky is seen in his leather biker gear). There were lots of little in jokes for the fans as well....Sumners Rudpoph Hess comment, Hooky talking about his love for a beautiful car, every scene with Rob Gretton.....and all of the concert scenes.

I also liked the second to last scene...starts with a medium close up of Barney....pulls back and you see him sitting at the center of a table, with Hooky and Gretton on his left and Steve and Gillian on his right. Corbijn lingers on the shot for a minute...and you realise that we are looking at New Order! Not only that, but the composition for the shot is inspired by the Last Supper by Da Vinci, with Barney in the Jesus spot, so thats funny as well. I thought it was a good way of showing how they would go on as New Order without actually saying it.

I cried at the end....and the use of New Order's "Get Out" was used in a very effective spot...

Its very much a fan film. With good music, great cinematography, great clothes, great haircuts. Very cool.

Just seen it for the 1st time today as well.

Sam Riley looks more like Steve than Ian, but Al J looks quite fetching in his mini toupe.

The end was superb- had me blubbing. The film gave a sharp insight as to why Ian killed himself, it genuinely portrayed how someone's life can be turned into chaos and the emotions were from the heart.

I finaly seen it too! It was playing at the cinema over the road from me!

In all I thought it was a good film....had to bite my cheek and look at my feet nearing the end though.

Also is/was Hooky really as crass at that really?!

I meant the very end bit with the crem chimney....I just didn't expect that.

I have to admit that the suicide scene was very well done. And the bit where Stephen and Gillian sit down with barney and hooky was a nice touch

I saw it some days ago. Awesome movie. Such movies work great in black and white. The actors were chosen very well (speaking of resemblance). Well you don't know how authentic this movie is. But it may have been this way. You dont have to have sympathy with Ian. This movie doesn't make a hero out of him (rather opposite way). Nice music (the cast could easily play as cover band), nice pictures, nice actors.

Waiting for the DVD :D .

Yeah that was a pretty sweet movie. First time you actually get to see Ian as a person, with actual emotions. Acting was superb.
