Hooky's Bass Rivals

Senor Hook has in my opinion been the no.1 bass player in terms of sound, melodies, style and posturing for the last 20 years (taking the no.1 spot from JJ Burnel of the Stranglers), but having seen the Air bass player at Glastonbury, Hooky may have a strong challenger for his no.1 spot...any similar thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the monsieur who plays bass for Air, but Hooky is pearless, mate!

The Cure's Simon Gallup is also a good bassplayer, but has often been accused of being a Hooky rip-off.

This guy does rip off Hooky, as he even bought the same bass, a semi-acoustic Eccleshall 335! Frankly, that's not just a coincidence.

Simon Gallup plays a Dick Knight custom modeled after a Gibson EB-2 bass, and he started playing in before Hookey played one... Sorry.

I think Hooky has told how he once got a tener from Gallup as royalties for the latter's shameless ripping off of his style.

So Gallup himself acknowledged it...sorry

I can't believe no-one has mentioned the Crown Prince of all bass-meisters....Mark King of Level 42.

FLEA from the Red Hot Chili Peppers !!!

I saw a live performance on German TV yesterday where they performed their new single "By the way". And FLEA had a Joy Division "Unknown Pleasures" sticker on his bass.

I read somewhere on the net, I think it was NME.com, there was an old article mentioning that John (however you spell his last name) and Flea had formed a Joy Division cover band in their free time. John also mentioned that Bernard Sumner was his favorite gutarist! I find that a bit hard to believe though.

Must be a thing with the Chilis in general... This appeared in an article about one time RHCP guitarist Dave Navarro in Total Guitar's Aug. 2001 issue (not mine, incidentally). All this RHCP talk just reminded me of it...

Talking about Joy Division as an influence on him...

I'm the one who's ripping Hook off since 20 years. I don't think to state that Gallup is a Hook Rip-Off is fair in any way. I never cared much for the Cure after Pornography. But Gallup had a style of his own very early and technically he might be the better player, although this might not count. I guess simply the way New Order were going was influencing the Cure, but they did it their own way. As a bassplayer with a sequencer-bass in your back, you could only shut your mouth or be melodic in a way and that's what Gallup did sometimes. Hookys Mother is responsible for this thread against Gallup. She was calling her son after listening to one of those Cure songs on the radio IIRC. Dirk

Yes, and there's an interview with John Fruiscante in the current issue of german Visions-Magazine where he says that his main influences are New Order and Depeche Mode. Strange choice for a guitarist isn't it...

Hooky is the best bassist, in my opinion. Other notable outstanding bassists I can think of are Mani (Gary Mounfield) from the Stone Roses...although he clearly followed Hooky's style and looked up to him.

Another great bassist (and singer) is Steve Kilbey from The Church. I think he's a bit underrated.

yeah....I know he plays a 4 string...but I could have sworn reading or hearing somewhere that he held the top string, thus only playing on 3 strings...as a matter of fact...I think it was Dave Kendall on 120 minutes pointing this out in one of their vids...I'm thinking it was the Just Like Heaven vid...now I'm thinking way too hard about a band I don't really care for any longer...oh well!!!

In your humble dC's opinion, The Church are probably the best Australian band ever. They're still kicking BTW, their form's fluctuated over recent years but they still have the ability to enchant and reward the patient listener.

Yep The Go-Betweens are certainly up there, along with The Saints- a vastly underrated and seminal punk outfit, predating the likes of the Sex Pistols. We truly aren't all overproduced soap star pop idols and redneck rockers. Mostly.

Absolutely right about The Go-Betweens.....but dunno about Go-Betweens Mk.2 though,Depthy...I know Lennon & McCartney is back in there but I still misses Lindy & Amanda's contribution to the group... I gotta tell u about copy of 16 Lovers Lane LP signed by the 6 of them in the band with added remarks about my chicken pox...( I couldnt make it to the gig but my then girlfriend made sure my LP made it thru the backstage... she's now my wife....)

Also, to The Church fans...I recently saw the lot of early albums up to 'HeyDay' in 2-CD remastered format in the shops....wow!!!! .....uh-huh, there goes my wallet....

That makes us three, I have often praised The Church here. Gorgeous songs and even better shirts. Steve Kilbey´s soloefforts are excellent too.

have just heared "automatic" by echoboy on john peel's show. the bassist sounds so much like hooky that it's probably a sample. (i should really find these things out before i post on the 'we all know loads about NO and flo doesn't' forum)
