It's certainly not my favourite New Order song, but also not the worst by far.
Nowadays, I wonder if people really know how important Blue Monday was for the dance community besides the fact that it was the best selling 12 inch record of all time (think of the idea ... I love it!).
Blue Monday did more ... much more ... the melody is in several later dance-tracks. Funny thing is: Blue Monday exists because there was that Donna Summer beat-track (Our Love) from 1979 and there was that Kraftwerk track (Uranium) from 1976. Also there was Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley (who picked up where Giorgio left) and Sylvester.
Very smart song.
I like the dance barney did for it for the 02, 05, and 06 tours. Pure class, and lets not forget his awesome uncanny ability to sing the lines out of sync i.e. Hyde Park 2005.

me too, but it's in a sorry state, the ship that is, not blue monday, which is still pretty cool, but not NO at their best.

I can vouch for that - I've had 2 - really lovable but completely mad. Ace dogs
It's also the only New Order track to have an awesome volume drop mid song. Oh and this volume drop version most frquently appears on all the "best of's" excluding Best of '94 with the '88 version instead. Also a casualty of the horrible Orgy cover.

They all work well for their times; '83 was radical at the time, '88 was a good refreshing reminder to the new pretenders to the throne and '95 was kick ass.
Blue Monda was the first New Order song I had ever heard. I was 13 when I fisrt heard it and it really blew my mind. It sounded like the coolest piece of music I had ever heard in my life.
I know a lot of people on this board are sick of BM...
But BM truly was a grounbreaking song and its brilliant in every way. Its got a very powerful and memorable melody, awesome production, powerful but simply Hook bass lines, brilliant programming from Steve, some lovely keyboard lines from Gillian, and one of Bernard's best vocal performances...cold, chilly, steely, with just a hint of anger, the voice of a man who is turning his back on the person who has been using him. Great lyrics from Barney as well.
I love BM and never tire of listenting to it. I believe it to be one of New Order's greatest achievements, both in terms of songwriting, innovation, production, and just plain awesomeness.
I really enjoyed the live versions of BM on the 05/06 tours, with the Kylie amsples and the extended instrumental outro with Steve, Barney, and Phil all rocking out on thier synthesizers whle Hooky bashed his drum pads, Brilliant.

Doesn't the version on Retro come closest to being "correct?" There's no missing beats at the beginning, right?
It's the song that got me into them when i first heard it in 1993 aged 13!
It's a work of genius.
The way all the bits fit together and that wobbly synth coming back in at the end gives me goosebumps every time

here's my mixup of.. blue monday+beach,
i overlayed 'the beach' at a lower volume....near the same mix points, and samples/vocals of 'blue monday'..
i used the remastered 'blue monday' from 24hr pp, 'the beach' is from 'substance'..

wow, i forgot about that, that's very old... i remember it being mentioned on a different new order site, and a link to it from there..
was that on the ceremony mailing-list site? maybe that's where it was..
yeah, that mix is a lot easier to make, all they did was crossover at points to the beach, and the cross back over to blue monday, no real mixing done..and a sample thrown in from a live version..
but its easy with this song, since the bpms are exactly the same..
i'll try to do it with the 'perfect kiss' and see what happens..
