sounds interesting - will be keen to hear the content of those shows. it's rare to find myself making an appointment with the radio these days (even on 'listen again')
other note: does anybody else think the radio 2 website branding on the left of the page looks remarkably familiar...?

Do you think we can possibly expect insight into the development of BArneys obsession with indian esque foods? Perhaps, Gillian can discuss her fond memories in the bathtub with Tony. And if steve talks tanks, perhaps we'll find out some of Hannet's drum noises we're recorded in one.

listened on the web. pretty decent interview i guess. wished for more info about the new project. thought Maconie's way of asking about the "status" of new order was good. Sad really to hear those great songs and know they won't get aired live again, but hey, I thought that in 1994 when I was really getting into the band at the ripe old age of 16 and look what happened. Not that I expect a great reversal like we had in 1998 -- no Gretton to get that done, and something tells me Andy is not about to make it happen.
Anyways, nice to hear Barney. Nice to hear the re-mastered tracks on crappy internet feed.
I'm off to watch the season premiere of Chuck tonight. Cheers all!!

Ah well, no great surprise there, though I totally buy into the magic of The Secret, wishes coming true through positive thinking and all that... :D
It's like your parents getting divorced when you're grown- even though you want them back together, you just want them to be happy and take advantage of double birthdays and Christmas parties. Hopefully they'll both play sometime this summer, that'd be good enough for me!

Guys, get to the point. What really did Barnee, Steve and der Hook say about the new project and about New Order's possible further releases.
BS said it was very unlikely that we'll ever hear anything new from NO. He said him and his friend (a bottle of white wine) were working on lyrics for his new stuff. He wasn't sure whether it would come out at Bad Loo-tennant (which I will always associate with Neil Tennant in a lavvy thanks to BRF), Barney Sumner or another band name that I can't remember.

Barney actually sounded very nervous?
Steve (and Gillian) talked mostly about where records were recorded and when (i.e. LowLife began in Japan, etc), bringing in stories involving Rob Gretton, etc. They weren't asked anything about what they're currently doing, apart from a response about The Other Two (never say never, although he could have been joking)!
He sounded most ill-at-ease after listening to a track, he seemed genuinely surprised at how good it sounded and talked about how he never listens to albums once they've been released.
It occurred to me that it must be shit to be Barney Sumner. No matter how good the lyrics, the guitars, the drums of the programming, the New Order sound will always be primarily defined by the sound of Hooky's bass.
The best work he could possibly produce without Hooky will never stand up to anything New Order did. It was true of Electronic and it will be true of Bad Neiltennant.
I wonder whether he feels this loss when him and his mate are writing words for new stuff, or whether he's daft enough to think that his share of the sum of those parts can be divided into anything that means much to anyone.

Can't say I'll ever agree but it's all personal taste ditto for Hooky; a selection of tracks from Revenge and Monaco will always piss over certain New Order tracks.

..thought it was funny after Vanishing Point skipped - Maconie rather unconvincingly said that "of course the copies you buy in the shops will be pristine" (not sure about that Stuart!).
Also earlier Hooky said that the reason he wanted to do the remasters was that when he played the old CDs whilst DJing they weren't loud enough (so now we know).

Like a slowed-down Ceremony riff, then a load of noise.
This is a band I really want to like, as well.
I guess we'll just have to wait to see the finished waveforms.

we'll if you like technique, it's fine, all the tracks are clear, and well done.... so theres no problem with those..
now the bonus discs are obviously another story altogether..

Whilst the original tapes were used to remaster the albums, Hooky suggested that it wasn't possible to locate all the master tapes for the bonus discs.
Yes Hooky confirmed last night (what I had suspected all along) that with the bankcruptcy of Factory a lot of the masters have now gone missing. Hooky said that his 'expert' pal Claude Flowers had given him a list of the missing masters.
To me this is really sad how can the masters for a major band like New Order just go missing?
The singer was from a band from round these here parts called Haven.
It's always odd when bands don't appreciate their own material and you got that impression with all three interviews. But then I suppose Michelangelo was too busy getting the detail on that hand right to see the whole ceiling.
The fights over including Hooky's bass were difficult for us fans to grasp too. It's New Order's signature sound and it has consistently set them apart from other dated 80s synthesiser bands.
I don't know if it's the mastering but the tracks sounded bloody good as well.

I humbly beg to disagree.
Hooky's bass is an important component of New Orders sound, but to most, including myself, not the signature.
New Order's signature sound is a combination of Bernard Sumner's distinctive voice and songwriting abilities (it is Barney who writes a lot of the actual music), Steven Morris's distinctive motorik drumming and his ability to create complex programmed sequences that combine polyrythms and melody, Gillian Gilbert's highly melodic and consise keyboard melodies (as well as her impressive lead guitar work on Dream Attack and her rythm guitar work on other tracks) and Peter Hooks distinctive lead bass playing.
THAT is what makes New Order's sound significant, important, timeless, and so so influential. Not just Peter Hook alone.
The songwriting itself is important and that is mainly down to Bernard Sumner. Listen to Electronic's first album, truly great songwriting on many of those tracks, and the majority of that music was written by Sumner. While the four members of the band jamming is brilliant, all members of New Order have stated in interviews that it is often Sumner who arranges the music, as well as coming up with many of the basic song ideas.
Steve and Gillian played a massive role in shaping New Order's sound due to thier grasp of programming, sequencing, and pretty synth melodies. Listen to the very first Other Two record and you will hear New Order there.
Peter Hook often put down his lead bass lines after the majority of the song was already written, putting lead lines down on melodies that had already been written by Sumner, Morris, or Gilbert. There are exceptions to this (Hooky wrote the sequenced bass line that became Touched by the Hand of God) but they are few.
And to my mind, Electronic's first album and the first Other Two album are better than anything that Revenge or Monaco put out.
Yes....Peter Hook is a great guy and he has an exquisite ear for lovely, gorgeous melodies, which is what makes his bass lines so awesome and so important for New Order. He is one of the all time great bass players because he changed the way people hear, see, and use the bass guitar. Hooky is very important in this respect.
But to say that that is what makes New Order distinctive? No way. It is a sum of all the parts that every member brought to the band.
Everyone I know who is a casual New Order fan likes New Order for the music itself, not just Hooky's bass.
Look at what makes Age of Consent great.
Great, catchy lead bass from Peter Hook.
Tight, perfectly tempoed dancey drums from Steve Morris.
Great impassioned vocal performance with touching lyrics from Bernard Sumner, as well as some great guitar playing from Sumner.
Huge, uplifting, utterly breathtaking and beautiful wall synth lines and melodies from Gillian Gilbert.
It takes all of them.
If the interviews were anything to go by then I can see why Bernard's put on a few pounds in recent years. He's been feeding off the great, big, fat chip on Hooky's shoulder...
