Bad Lieutenant is the new band of Bernard Sumner (New Order, Joy Division). The band - named after the notorious gangster movie with Harvey Keitel - are in addition to Sumner from unknown young guitarists Jake Evans and Phil Cunningham and has prominent guest performances by Alex James (Blur) and Stephen Morris. The pleasant listening Never Cry Another Tear is probably the most poppy album Sumner's career has become. A debut that is most reminiscent of his work with Johnny Marr in Electronic and sometimes to by New Order influenced Cut Copy. The song material is characterized by a light-footed and sparse guitar-oriented sound with electronics only used to colour some things. The prominent use of acoustic guitars provides the songs of a sparklefresh sound. That Sumner is convinced of the qualities of his new colleagues shows that even some of his vocals has contracted to Jake Evans. Bad Lieutenant thus presents itself as a strong band audible pleasure in what she does. And unfortunately we could not say that of New Order in the last years. Rating: 8,0
