I talked to Pete Wylie before the Bad Lieutenant-Gig in Liverpool. He said freebass would release a single this week.

And in other news

Peter Hook will be interviewed on Radio 6 Music tomorrow morning at 9.10am by Shaun Keaveney about the Unknown Pleasures tour and Freebass.

The interview will feature the first ever radio play of a track from the Freebass EP.

Looks like they're running into the same problems as to when I bought the Man Ray EP...

It'll be a digital download, but when you go to download it, there's an "Access Denied" message?

Wait for the e-mail with the link to the zip file to arrive... Click on that, and it'll be okay... Downloading now... :-)

I bought the complete EP and received a link to one long "continuous" 24 minute MP3 file rather than the four individual files I thought I'd be getting. Unfortunately it makes listening to individual songs a real hassle as you constantly have to fast forward through the file to the point you want.

Also, it's a small point but for 99p per track and in this day and age we should really be getting 320 bit-rate files, not 192. Preferably though I'd rather just pay a little more for an actual CD  will the Freebass stuff be getting a physical format release?

Musically it obviously sounds much more polished than the demos we heard a couple of years ago. Live Tomorrow You Go Down (I think?) caught my attention pretty much immediately as it's the electro-ey one. The first three are guitar driven numbers... I'll have it on heavy rotation for the next few days before forming any opinions. Milky Way sound does sound pretty good though.

I guess it's the trend to release singles digitally nowadays. It would be good if the upcoming album had a physical format release, by the way.

PS- I saw this on the news section of the site about the EP- "The EP is available as a one track continuous download and as a four track download with two bonus tracks. The four tracks are also available as individual downloads."

Typical, so I bought the wrong download???

Seriously, though, it would help if the descriptions as to what you're actually buying were a lot better - i.e. what the package included (CD, MP3, individual tracks, etc)??? If the album's going to be released as both a physical and a virtual product, then how will we know the difference?????????????

I didn't check their News section regarding the file types available I just went directly to the "Shop" to purchase. Unfortunately it didn't warn me on the EP page it's just one long file otherwise I would have bought them individually.

I went on past experience from iTunes/Amazon that when you buy an EP or Single, you're buying 3-4 individual tracks. Not one long audio file  I don't believe the Manray EP was one continuous file either, it was four individual files.

Nick's absolutely right though, there could be a wee bit more info on the product pages.

The only difference I can see between the two is right at the bottom where it says 'Continuous Digital Download' on one and '6 track ep' on the other.

Without being aware that there are 2 different ones who would think to check for that?

Ah well it's a lesson in paying attention to detail for me.

Hi

Hooky wanted the EP up as a continuous piece and there was a short period where the 6 track wasn't available. Apologies for any confusion.

If anyone would prefer the 6 track to the one piece, please contact the site on

http://mail@fac51thehacienda.com and we'll sort it out.

Cheers Chad

Thanks for the info Chad - that's pretty good service from a music provider for once and I'm sure many will appreciate the help.

The six tracks are really good. Nice that there's some variety in this release and that the whole thing is likely to live up to everyone's expectations.

Certainly well worth it in my view.

Looking forward to the album now!

Thanks Dennis R

While you're at it Chad, you need to display more information about the music formats that people are purchasing. There was no upfront indication whether the Man Ray tracks were downloads, vinyl or what. It couldn't be assumed they were all downloads as you had CDs on the same page.

Dennis, I was able to bypass the UK-only roadblock by just entering a UK shire and postcode at the end of an Aussie address. Not pretty but it worked.

Can anyone advise whether "Two Worlds Collide" will be available on CD/vinyl at any point?

:\pimp3:

Damn good question - as has been stated previously, 192Kbps for an MP3 is pretty poor nowadays, so I'd rather have a physical format (of some description) for the album...

I'm somewhat interested in the track that involves Tim Burgess (unfortunately, the only track I'm interested in from the EP), but I'd be happier if the EP (and the individual songs) were available on iTunes. (Last time I checked, Bad Lieutenant's songs were available on iTunes.)

I don't have a credit card (I'm a student) but I can buy an Itunes gift card thingy if I really wanted a track or two (or more), so the fact that the EP seems to be available only through the site is preventing me from buying that one track.

(If you were to ask me, "Then how do you buy your CDs and DVDs off amazon?" well, I use either cash on delivery, or I pay at the convenience store[you can do that here].)

But if offering the EP through the site was a decision on part of the band, then I respect that.

Hi

We had a few technical problems yesterday, we are working to resolve these this morning.

Would anyone unable to download the ep from the site contact us on:

http://mail@fac51thehacienda.com

Similarly for anyone who has downloaded the continuous ep and would prefer the 6 track, we will replace. Just get in touch.

We are considering a physical release for those that want it.

Hooky wanted this track on the site only so no iTunes for the moment

We are really sorry that you've had problems. Stick with us, we'll sort them out.

Mail link: mail@fac51thehacienda.com

For those that have already bought the track, but have not yet received an e-mail, try this (I don't have anything to do with the site, btw):

  • In the top right-hand corner (once you've logged in), you should see the following details:

{Your username} | "Log Out"

You can actually click on {Your username} which should (really) have something saying "My profile" or "My account" - it took me a while to realise that you could actually click on it... :p

This brings you to a screen saying "My Account".

Click on "Files" - hopefully there will be a link to the files you can download...

Of course, that assumes that the purchase was successful... :)

That same site said that the EP will be available from the 29th of March. If that is the case, then maybe that's why people who ordered aren't getting their downloads yet. In any case, I think FAC51 needs to be more specific on the site (format, release date, whether there are conditions for purchasing).

An instrumental of Dark Starr is a must....Marks' rant gets a bit irritating after three or four times.

Noticed the 6 track 192k version has gone now and is replaced by the continuous version (who actually wants that?) and 4 separate 320k versions......why wasnt the 6 track version at 320k?

Will there be .FLAC versions by the end of the week?

I may be a cynic but there will be no double dipping from me unless a CD is made available.

well i've always thought it was a little bit different, a bit more experimental.

have you actually heard the pete wylie or the howard, i think dull or underwhelming is one of the epithets that seriously could not be levied at them.

the tim is quite a straight track in an no / jd way. Which is pretty obvious.

Just keep it clean btw.

Chad has been very eager to work out people's problems so he deserves respect there. Maybe the Shop itself could have undergone a few more stress tests before going public but on the plus side, fans voiced concerns about 192 quality and they listened upgrading to 320 pretty quickly so can't say fairer than that.

As for the EP itself I'm really enjoying the first half. The Burgess track is great and Hooky's bass nicely pays homage to Ceremony eventually seguing into a trademark new melody towards the end. The Milky Way with Wylie is probably my favourite of the lot, just a great tune with a strong vocal. Dark Starr I suspect is the one people will either love or hate and confess I did find 7 minutes of Marks a bit grating; obviously the more leftfield/experimental one.

Live Tomorrow You Go Down reminds me a bit of See-Saw from Monaco's second album which must admit was never really a favourite... might grow on me. Electro bordering on disco-tastic it's a change of pace from the rest of the guitar driven tracks.

Overall and based on one weekend's listen I'd give the EP 7 or 8 out of 10. A mixed bag depending on your tastes but the first two tracks are very strong and heighten expectation for the album. Although they have their own sound, You Don't Know is clearly the most New Order-y of the lot and should be a popular one round these parts.

I just want to voice my support of Chad, who has been responsive and helpful through the whole process. He's a nice bloke who really cares and listens to everyone's concerns. Certainly despite the hiccups, this is better than dealing with a record label.

Very interested in the album now, thats for sure!

Thanks to everyone for their support. I've just read these. I'm choked.

You guys are right its been a really difficult launch. We take most of the criticism on the chin. We should have put 192kbs up and we should have launched with more testing and we are learning as we go, its a bit like the blue paint on the opening night, but after all this time Hooky wanted it released and we stand by that.

We are not yet doing physical but its under consideration.

We hope everyone has their purchase and we hope you love it, like we do.

Please get in touch if anyone has further issues.

Physical release would be nice and 192 bits is still a bit minimal; I think it should be closer to 320 if there's no physical release.
