To mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Ian Curtis, I have published 3 interviews I conducted in 2007 with the surviving members of Joy Division. The interviews are over 15,000 words long and provide a profound commentary on Ian’s life and death. There's loads of stuff even a Joy Division geek like me didn't know. amazing how so many of you remember the 30th anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption, especially as it happened on the west coast of the US, pretty far from the UK....
The gig at the Factory last night was fabulous. Hooky sang every one like he meant it, there were moments of proper magic in his singing and the bass riffs were crisp and loud. Kudos to Jack too - he played a lot of these. It was great to hear and see Paul getting in around the most familiar drumlines with his usual combination of precision and chaos. It must be hard to gauge whether to try to copy the original and risk getting it wrong, or to do it your own way. Or maybe it's not hard, maybe you just turn up and batter the fuck out of the drums. I think Paul got it spot on, anyway.
Rowetta came on for a couple and did wonderfully. I'm always nervous of Rowetta as we all know she's capable of a very powerful sound that wouldn't have gone well here. But she got it just right, loads of energy but sensitive with it.
I wondered before the gig whether it would be a pure band effort or would have added electronica and effects like the album. Well the effects were there, and worked really well.
High point for me was Disorder, Hooky spat it out with such venom, a real moment.
There was minimal chat between songs, just a brief dedication to 'the man' at the start and that was about it.
The whole thing was up there with the NO/JD set at the John Peel Night for me and that's high praise.
Not feeling feeling feeling too special this morning though, mainly because I was trapped next to the bar for most of set and, it being quite warm in there, drank several cans of cold Red Stripe. Which was nice, but explains if none of this makes sense.
I wish I was going tonight, now. In fact, I might try to get a ticket. Anyone else going?

Whatever they've done to the acoustics in the Factory has worked a treat, that awful ringing has all gone but it was still nice and loud (even from the bar). The sound generally was brilliant, indeed several people went over to the sound desk to say so.

Did they play any other JD songs except the UP ones?

A film crew filmed the lot, probably gone straight to Hooky's vault!.
I think Simon Topping was the only person in there who didnt know the words to Transmission!
As for the rest of the gig I was very disappointed that Hooky barely played his bass and instead handled all the vocals.....I will leave it at that.

I wish Jack could sing 
As the day has worn on, and as I've sobered up and considered this, I've come to realise what a fabulous effort it must have taken for Hooky to step up and take this on. Learning all the words (no autocue) must have been a big enough task, having the bottle to stand up and run through the whole album like that, including all the difficult ones was very brave. Either that, or he's bloody daft.
Anyway, well done Hooky.
lots of people paying tribute at the stone yeterday theres a good piece in the mac express , Barton street could do with the road relaying , went to the exhibition, damm good .managed to see some of the soudcheck before being politley asked to leave ,had a few beers by piccadilly gardens with m8,,,im telling you its like your front room that factory, went to pub by the factory and saw q, bloody hell there not allgoing to get in,, more beer, into gig, £3 for a bottle of beer ,never in the hac m8,, as col said above storming set,, storming,, hooky did it well proud,, sound was ace and we all fitted in,,,,got some of the songs on me phone, but as i cant even work out how to upload photos , dont ask,,, and all this cos one young man had a weight on his shoulders, God bless you Ian.

Been up to the cemetery tonight, even at 6.40pm there were 4 17 year olds from Birmingham, who had been to the factory gig last night, paying their respects. There was also another lady there who simply stood quietly looking at the cards and poster that have been placed recently.
We got chatting and I talked about seeing JD twice in a week supporting Buzzcocks. One of the kids was in tears, talking about Control and wondering why he did what he did it's amazing that 30 years on, Ian has that impact on people.
Is it me or does it seen to really the 'foreign' new order etc... fans who are blabbering on about 30 yrs.. we know like last year..

I can't say much as I'm too young, so for me, I think Ian was a good lyricist, a unique singer and such. I like JD, but I don't feel a sentimentality towards JD because I wasn't even alive, and my parents were still teenagers 30 years ago.
However, it's amazing what he (+the other members) have achieved in such a short amount of time within JD.
That's all I have to say, although those who knew Ian personally, as well as fans who were alive then and could remember things might have a different perspective.

joy division in a lonely place "complete' version is on youtube, type, "joy division in a lonely place complete version' it is about 5 minites it is the heart and soul doubled up WITH A UNHEARD 30 SECOND CLIP WHERE IAN IS SINGING 'HANGMAN LOOKS ROUND AS HE WAITS, CORD STRETCHES TIGHT THEN IT BREAKS' ALSO SOME SAMPLED VOCALS OF IANS VOICE AND THUNDERCLAP EFFECTS, IT HAS BEEN REMASTERED AND SOUNDS RATHER BETTER, SO ALL IN ALL AN IMPERFECT BUT MUCH BETTER THAN THE HALF CLIP ON HEART AND SOUL, CLOSING THE GAP FOR THE DAY WHEN THE FULL REMASTERED VERSION COMES OUT.
