New exhibition promises fresh insight into Joy Division singer

Manchester Evening News June 24, 2010

Unkown pleasures are guaranteed for Joy Division fans at a new exhibition offering fresh insight into the life of tragic singer Ian Curtis.

A unique collection of memorabilia – including previously unseen letters – will take centre stage in the frontman's home town of Macclesfield later this month.

Original record sleeves and set lists, collectable vinyl singles and albums, music business items, and letters from Tony Wilson and band members are among the other artefacts gathered together for the first time

Many have been donated by fans.

Among the many exclusives, devotees can read an unpublished, handwritten letter from the troubled singer describing second album 'Closer' as 'a disaster'.

The exhibition, entitled 'Unknown Pleasures', is part of a summer-long festival of the same name taking place across Macclesfield to mark the 30th anniversary of Curtis's death. The talented lyricist died at his Macclesfield home on May 18, 1980.

Curators are former Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris and music writer Jon Savage.

Jon said: “This exhibit brings together a wide range of material - posters, handbills, handwritten documents, and other memorabilia - for the first time. “Much of it comes from the fans - a testament to Joy Division's continued impact.”

The exhibition, at Macclesfield Heritage Centre on Roe Street, runs from July 29 to August 9. To find out more visit joydivisionexhibition.com.
