Well, I think I'll have to find more things than Shiver and Yellow which are the only 2 songs I know from Coldplay....!

Well, its a very pleasant yet somewhat boring album. Just about every song is quite good, but nothing really grabs you and makes you want to keep listening. That's my opinion anyway. Bernard liking them is a bad sign, but anyone who's heard Get Ready already knows why.
Coldplay is good pop music. Yellow, Trouble, Clocks, and the Scientist are all top tracks from them. Chris has a good voice, and their songs just simply work. Do they make memorable awe-inspiring music, nope, but it's good radio music.

Now why on earth did I go and buy their first cd?!?!?! 
All I had to do was download the songs I liked...
But then again from what I read here I assume Barney likes them...?

Let's get real: Barney is old, we cant consider what he's saying anymore. That's the reason why anyone shouldn't expect too much from the next album. We'll all buy in the end because it's New Order and not because it's good.

From what I can gather from previous comments in this thread Barney has said that he likes Coldplay? That's fair enough, everybody's entitled to their opinion (blahblahblah - had to get that decleration out of the way :D) BUT "Oldplay" are really very dull and pretty much 2000s answer to Dire Straits. Melody and lyrics aside, absolutely none of the songs keep me interested beyond ten seconds (if that) however I thought "Clocks" until the vocals kicked in was quite good, but I haven't listened to it in over a year. The rest of the songs do tend to be pretty soppy, heart on your sleeve guitar/piano nonsense i.e. "Oh, I've made so many bad mistakes about you girl" a bit like the nauseating, wobbly-headed David Gray.
Like Gray, Coldplay will musically end up running out of steam very soon if they haven't already. I reckon they'll do another album or two then the music press (even Q) will turn against them. Oldplay's albums won't be remembered in 20-30 years as milestones in British rock, whereas alot of New Order's work definitely will. The other thing that irked me about frontman Chris Martin is for a period of about 2 years, if you opened up any music mag it would have his gormless mug at some awards ceremony snuggling up to The Hedge from U2 or somebody similar i.e. Here's my new best mate! Martin is like the kid at school that wants everyone to love him, and while he may be a nice guy, he and his band are just too "safe" to ever be relevant or memorable. To their credit, they probably soundtrack boring twentysomething relationships really well though.
I wouldn't worry too much about Barney expressing he likes them. He's either taking the piss or even if he's not I doubt they will ever have an influence on NO's work. The man who wrote such totally original songs like Everything's Gone Green, The Perfect Kiss, and even later experimental stuff like Make It Happen can't surely be getting songwriting tips off "The Geography teacher and his gawky bird" © Liam Gallagher 2002

The fact that Chris Martin has in the past "given props" to Justin Timberlake & Jamelia tells you all you need to know about the audience Coldplay try & cater to.
Plus what's with scrawling "Make Trade Fair" on his hand & piano every time he's on the telly? If I wanted some patronising arsehole guilt-tripping me into donating to charity, I'd rather it be Bob Geldof!

Yeah that's another thing about that permenantly stubbled twat that pisses me off. I, and I'm sure most of your average supermarket shoppers could not give a fuck where our bananas come from, so long as they're banana shaped, greenish-yellow and taste like bananas. He doesn't seem to realise how patronising it is for a minted muso like him to lecture the general public on stuff he's suddenly taken a passing interest in.

God, this thread has reminded me how really shit and MOR I consider Coldplay to be. I'd forgotten all about them until tonight

I've seen Coldplay a couple of times and they were quite good. Chris comes across as a wanker but they had improved as a band in the last couple of years. However I think their last album may have been a fluke and I'd like to see if they can follow it up. Not a patch on the Order though.

Try finding the b-side "crest of waves". much like new order, their b-sides often make superior listening.
I find them boring and bland. Their songs are all very plodding, but then having said that the recent one Chris Martin wrote for Embrace (Gravity) is actually a very good song. I like it anyway - which seems a bit paradoxical in light of what I just said.
Never heard 'em. Don't plan to either. I'm sure Barney listens to all kinds of ca-rap!!

Well, A Rush of Blood to the Head is a seriously good album, and "The Scientist" is probably in my top 20 songs of all time...
Clocks is quite similar to U2's music, which is not a problem for me, but it's a good track.
But I have to admit, compared to New Order, you have more than 1 or 2 "maybe it shouldn't be there" tracks on the album.
Let's face it though, in good old LP days, Run Wild and other cheesy songs wouldn't have been on Get Ready anyways ;)

Lol, I do totally respect you opinion Nic.. I myself even liked "The Scientist" for a while, until I realised it was just a massively self-indulgent, piano-ey ballad by an ex-History graduate who had trouble getting girlfriends :D From Coldplay interviews I read in the press at the time (not hard to miss, there were only about 123032942 of them) Chris Martin used to constantly remind us how he never had a girlfriend or was a virgin etc. Not that this was such a bad thing, but it instantly put any relationship songs he'd written with Coldplay into "fantasy land" and therefore utter tripe IMO. You could accuse me of taking it all too seriously, but as a New Order fan it's probably apparent I don't listen to just any old shite!
Also, I used to dislike Run Wild too for the "Cheese factor", lyrics about "Jesus etc.". But if you take it in context of someone close to you dying, or perhaps someone very ill (Steve & Gillian's child perhaps?) then you can immeadiately see how the whole meaning and impact of the song changes. Every time I hear that song now I take it in the aforementioned context and it's actually a fucking good song, especially as a dear friend of mine passed away quite recently. The notion of "if Jesus comes to take your hand" i.e. a person passing away, almost anyone close to them would instinctively say "I won't let go, I won't let go". The ending line of "Live til I die, live to get high" is simply moving on, wanting to enjoy life because we're all mortal and will all "go" some day...
Or at least that's my understanding of the song, one of the rare "human" moments on Get Ready I think, from an otherwise grinding album of "cheesy" rock some might say :)

Coldplay is complete shite and should be pulled from all internet and radio playlists. Can not stand them.
Coldplay are alright, my girlfriend has both of their albums and it doesn't bother me when she plays them, but i can't help feeling they are the offspring of Radiohead, and i don't think they are the only ones.
I really can't see what the big fuss over Coldplay was, personally. They completely bore me.
Cold play are really a kind of indie sound for the masses. I don't have any of their albums but I borrow my sisters from time to time. Coldplay is better than a lot of the other commercial stuff out there and it is easy to listen to.
I think the way I would describe is pop music made well which is also how I describe the Bee Gee's.
Coldplay are a load of crap, I wish they'd just split up and leave us all alone. They're the sort of whining softies that give us students a bad name.
