Heard on the grapevine... Brandon Flowers is to bow to some of his fans requests and announce that the regrouped KILLERS are to record four New Order songs to release as an EP in 2012.

For years now he has made no secret of the fact that he admires Hooky, Barney and co, citing them often in interviews as a huge influence on the formative years (and sound) of the Las Vegas synth pomp rockers, who are set to return to the UK for a big tour supporting the release of their next album RISING TIDE, the follow up to 2008's DAY AND AGE.

Having already covered a Joy Division song SHADOWPLAY for an I-Tunes compilation a few years back, they have decided to pay proper tribute to the legendary Mancunians in earnest.

One New Order song which Brandon absolutely adores and will be amongst the four covers is Regret, the song which of course all seasoned New Order watchers will immediately remember featured the band on the Baywatch set which was the first glimpse of New Order after a four year gap following the World Cup anthem of 1990.

Other songs that they are considering include Run, Age of Consent, Close Range and SubCulture.

Personally, I feel that they should either do a version of Temptation or Face Up. The latter would be most intriguing as it would then be a perfect vehicle to showcase Brandon freaking out and camping it up for the climactic choruses as he struts around the stage like the big cock of showbiz that he so clearly is.

Anyway, we await this project with barely concealed excitement - or trepidation (bearing in mind recent travesties by the likes of George Michael)

Absolutely adore all three of those, but can't figure out whether I want him to touch them or not... I mean, they are all perfect as they are.

2011 to 2012---years of the New Order covers? George Michael, Chris Lowe, and now The Killers?

I strongly believe it's a new New Order revival, like it was with Joy Division c. 2007. By the way, a proper feature movie about New Order still awaits its director.

as long as it not as bad as George Michael's cover of "True Faith" it should be fine...naaa who the fuck are we kidding here, this is going to be complete shit

That version of Shadowplay they did was utter shite. Im convinced it only got kudos because it brought a relatively unknown song to the masses.

They also did Mozzers Why Dont You Find Out For Yourself which was also shite.

Although some love the fact that one of the biggest bands on the planet (for now) like to big up New Order I wish they'd just fuck off.

I like many kinds of cover songs in many different genres. So I am not against the idea of covers. But I also seem to not really like very many JD/NO covers---maybe the original songs are too good. Re-Order does many good versions of New Order songs. Sugiurumn (Japanese DJ) did an interesting version of WIM. Razed In A New Division Of Agony did a version of Shadowplay, that was better than the Killers' version, IMO. Chris Lowe singing Subculture wasn't that bad either, IMO. So there are JD/NO covers I do like. But not very many.

We ARE talking about The Killers, after all.... so you know pretty much what to expect.

Bombastic bellowed histrionics, bad haircuts and waistcoats, making for some very entertaining showbiz cock craft.

The Killers should stick to what they are good at.

They don't possess the bass player to cover Regret, Age of Consent and Close Range.

Their drummer is good live though, but looks like he needs a bath.

Yeah, the drummer is a greasy old hairy tramp isn't he? I'm sure that every time he has finished playing the drums there is a pool of water around the kit some three inches deep.......

This is comical, and if this is a NO revival I'll stick with Hellbent and just pretend that the dead horse isn't being beaten still.

It won't happen.

Rising Tide is a song Killers performed at a warm up gig before they played Hyde Park last week....I guess there is a chance that eventually it may be the title of their new album but apparently they have only written four or five new songs.

Regret was three years after Word In Motion not four so that's also inaccurate.

I just don't see why they would do it either.....it's pointless. I think they are a great band (run'2 for cover) come on there's loads worse out there.

But all said if it is true it will be awful :D

Sorry but people do realise that this is total bollocks yes? Am getting worried from some of the replies that people are taking this with less than the lorryload of salt it deserves.

I fear Mr Eck's boredom/sheer hatred for Das Killers has made him create something which sounds a little too realistic. This thread has even become the top link on Google if you search for this subject.

No fan of Das Killers myself - they hit the "stadium rock" button as quickly as they could and Brandon Flowers is a total cock. There, I've said it.

You are correct. As i stated before he had THE KILLERS as the name of the BAYWATCH/Regret video band until i made this CRYSTAL clear that this was wrong. Also a quick Google and no mention elsewhere on the net.A nice touch on the copyright though, his real name is MARK!Fancy pretending:p  :D

Think this is a good idea as the Killers have a massive following, the benefit will be Killers fans seeking out NO music and therefore creating a potential additional audience if they ever do reform!

I saw them do shadowplay live in Newcastle a few years back and thought it was pretty good.

As anyone noticed that Flowers is rocking a mid 80's Barney cut? Look at that fade!

I like The Killers, I never understood why so many here hate them. They write some good songs, are fabulous live (seen them on the Hot Fuss and Day and Age tours and they were fantastic both times). They are clearly influenced by NO but are doing their own thing. I like his foghorn voice. Flowers can be a bit of a prat because he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, but The Killers are a good band, certainly better than a lot of other current groups. I will take the Killers over Arctic Monkeys and the Kaiser Chiefs any day.

I agree, that I would take the Killers over other dreck such as Arctic Flunkeys, Franz Fuckinand, Kuntsabian, and Kaiser Cheese anyday....only because they are entertaining for whatever odd sadomasochistic reason..... the way Flowers prances about the stage like he's some sort of Freddie Mercury in glitter showbiz lands.... there is summat rather enjoyable about watching them in action.... it brightens up my day make no mistake...but it's the fact that I cannot take them seriously that helps me 'enjoy' them in comparison to a lot of the other dross around.

This is why I like ridiculing them so much. I hope he (Flowers) too realises that he's doing it for entertainment value rather than artistic value because the lyrics on most of their songs are so risible they make Barney's sound like fucking Baudelaire or Keats by comparison!!

Examples: "I've Got Soul but I'm Not A Soldier" "Somebody Told Me, that you had a boyfriend, who looked like my girlfriend...."

MY life would definitely be duller without having the Killers to snigger at on TV.

Fuck Simple Minds - let's have Foghorn Flowers for Mr BOOM BASTIC!!!!

You hear that all the time but in practice I doubt its ever going to produce a massive groundswell of support. Did many Killers fans buy WFTSC when it came out?

Anyway, that twat Flowers was on the Brit Awards name checking The Smiths and the Pet Shop Boys so lets not get carried away with how much of a fan he is. Sounds like hes covering a few bases. I think he wants it to work the other way to be honest, New Order fans to start liking The Killers.

I thinks its worked too. Ever feel like you've been re-heated?

I am a huge New Order fan, and have been since I was 14. I own every record, saw them in Chicago in 2005, and they are one of the reasons I started to make music.

I also love the Pet Shop Boys. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are fine songwriters.

I am also a huge Smiths fan, brilliant musicians, brilliant band.

So it is possible to genuinely like all three.

I agree that Flowers is a bit of a prat. His lyrics are sometimes dumb. But I think he probably is a genuine New Order fan.

I mean, look at that Barney cut he is sporting! hahahaha.

Oh aye, I know that. Im just quite cynical when people start citing huge influences in their music (sorry lads, I cannot hear New Order when I hear The Killers). Are they trying to justify or legitimise their own existence?

They like music better than their own? Im not impressed.

If anybody takes the Killers seriously, then they must be extremely foolish!

NOBODY should take the Killers seriously.

The Killers exist only as a momentary diversion.....there isn't another band as unintentionally hilarious as they are right now so, we might as well just accept this. If they are going to cover New Order, the Smiths or even the Pet Shop Bores, then I think they should be allowed to. I wish they would do some old skool British heavy metal covers as well - how about Iron Maiden, Saxon, Black Sabbath or Judas Priest (the closest relatives to the Killers in terms of sheer pantomime)?

 :shades:

It's a fair point Gene. I remember some blog when Arcade Fire won their Brit Awards and were thanking the bands that influenced them (including New Order) and the comment was along the lines of they sound nothing like any of them. I guess with Killers you have the Crystal video and when Hot Fuss was released I was interested after the New Order comparison, i.e. eighties synths and guitars. Liked Get Ready but missed the electronic sound if that makes sense esp after looking forward to it for so long. I think Smile Like You Mean It is a little New Order but that's probably it on any of their songs.

They can do what the fuck they want but sadly I think some knobheads may give them a more sympathetic ear because "they're New Order fans just like us".

And that, I believe, is the point.

The way I see it is like this: so fucking what if X or Y band are big fans of New Order? Does it mean that X or Y band are necessarily any good? I mean, Killers constantly say they love Joy Division and New Order, but none of this is apparent in their music. They may also like Pet Shop Boys but I guess one element that connects both bands is the sense of the absurd and the showbiz tendencies. Other than that they both use synths.... whoop de dooo!!

I mean, I hate Coldplay, but if Chris Paltrow was to say that he was a huge New Order fan would it make me like Coldplay's records?

What do you think I am? The world's biggest UPoo fan or summat???

:evil4: :shades:

I must be a knob head then. Have seen them live a couple of times and thought they were excellent. It's really poor to make assumptions like you have. We are all human, wired up differently, what floats one persons boat may not float someone else's so calling people knob heads because of their views is a bit unjust.

Why do they need to justify their existence? I work for virgin and we had them on at v festival. They are a far bigger draw than new order ever were and i am a huge new order fan having first seen them as jd supporting buzzcocks

Nah I think the problem is whether anyone should care whether a band they ordinarily wouldn't pay attention to quotes their favourite band as a huge influence or whatever. So basically band X that i think is useless says that they all like NO so much. Well good for you. But I don't care and I'm out to walk my dog. I'd rather listen to band Y that don't care about NO but kick butt and I like them, and they seem to be nice people as well and genuinely like my dog. So far so good. Both bands are OK and I buy them some icecream. However there comes band Z and they say fuck, there's someone with enough money to waste for icecream for some bands, let's pretend we like NO to get some icecream. So they pretend. And they pretend. And I the icecream thaws, and there's another band and another reival, so they shitch to threre because there might be some ice cream left. NOW THAT IS EVIL.

Get my point? And I don't even like ice ceream.

Those Killers are aimed at a younger audience than most of the posters here I would imagine so no surprise that there are negative vibes towards them,it's like when I was into New Order in the '80's and older brothers of my friends would denounce them as being rubbish and attempt to foist "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Brothers In Arms" on us as examples of "proper" music, having said that The Killers to now are definitely not what New Order were to then. For me the Killers are just not that interesting musically apart from releasing a few alright singles but not otherwise worth getting excited over. With certain bands there is no middle ground, people either love them or want them all dead,I would put U2 and Coldplay in this category also and maybe The Cure.

WIll I listen to the ep if it gets released? Maybe. I guess the Killers are one of those bands that I tend to use as a sort of safety valve when I'm feeling a bit stressed out from work, or down or whatever cos I know they would send me into raptures of mirth.
