BBC Glastonbury live CD

One item that has always been oddly missing from my collection of NO songs is the BBC Glastonbury album.

Does anyone know if there are any major differences apart from the artwork (diff. track listings, diff. sound quality etc)?

EDIT: Also, does anyone know if this is available digitally (legally) anywhere?

Same tracklisting. Just a different cover; upgrading from the curiously naff nineties one to a more uniform one (its a similar concept to the In Session CD etc).

It is easily available digitally for free in certain areas, now.

Even when I first heard it I thought it was a bit weak and since the Internet came along I don't think I heard one that's as naff :-(

Listened to it loads though, filling in time until something better came along...and then Republic turns up.

Nowt wrong with the gig, just the recording that isn't up to scratch.

I can honestly say that I have only listened to this unessential live album in its entirety about two or three times and no more when I originally bought it in 1992.

It's one of the worst live albums all told. Bernard absolutely [vocally] murders a couple of songs - especially BLT, does a pointless version of Every Little Counts (which for some unknown reason is actually shoddily mis-titled on the album, did no one not notice, or were they too arsed to care?). And then the pointless cover to end all pointless covers - Sister Flamin' Ray.

The only noteworthy thing is the quip "Notice all our songs have big endings? Big endings...small dicks..." from Bernard himself.....as BLT finishes....

So it was reissued on CD with a new cover.... so what?

I'm pretty sure I've got a 'complete' copy of this gig somewhere, with Elegia from Retro tacked on along with the other missing tracks sourced from FM.

Not that it enhances anything in any way, of course. This has always been my least favourite New Order release by a country mile.

Barney's vocals are terrible on this CD

Its a terrible album.The singing is horrid and theres so many bum notes by Barney, Hooks and Gillian its laughable.

The best song is TBTHOG. Temptation is ruined by a badly out of tune guitar. TPK,BLT,AOC have terrible guitar effects. Sister Ray is just crap. Cant remember the other songs.

A real shame as its a quality recording (as in clarity). Strange choice of original cover, as photo was from a concert in 1989 in Ibiza Cafe something (I believe). 2 years after bloody Glastonbury performance.

Shortly after the gig I got two bootlegs, one audio and one video. I also got hold of the Radio 1 broadcast. Of the three the radio broadcast was for me the worst. The quality of recording was great but the levels were all wrong, Hookys mike was barely there yet audience recordings show it well up there. Can't say I've heard this tape in well over 20 years and I think the Glastonbury CD is simply a tidy version of the FM broadcast, seem to remember some discussion at the time of it's release and the answer was that it wasn't a multitrack recording that could be remixed later, it was mixed and broadcast live, badly.

So for me Barneys singing was about normal for that period of time, the Glastonbury recording was badly recorded and simply raised it's prominence. If you want a good radio broadcast try the 10th Summer recording.

It isn't a great gig, but not as bad as everyone is saying IMO.

Ceremony and Sunrise, weren't fantastic versions, which is probably why they were left off the CD that Windsong released. The original BBC transcription LP that came out in 1987, has the full show. This is quite rare and expensive.

I've heard the gig was fine, but a lot of the fun was lost thanx to (a) the transition to tape, (b) the editor's scissors - not only of songs but of inter-song banter too - and (c) the rather prissy production. To be honest, when the album first came out it was at the height of my enthusiasm and the nadir of their creativity so I was just chuffed to shove another slab of vinyl into me collection! Plus to my knowledge it was the first official recording of a standard live take on Temptation. Not an essential release, but not an embarrassment either.

Best. Album. Ever.

I like it for True Faith with its chaotic ending,also has some samples from Star Trek on TPK if I remember rightly,courtesy of Mr Morris I would imagine.I would like to hear the full gig,odd that they included Sister Ray and left out Elegia & Sunrise.

This concert really is pretty bad; totally agree with the other comments that their shambolic carelessness isn't captured in a flattering way by the mixing.

If I remember right even the liner notes say it treads the line between genius and a complete joke.

That is actually spot on... I remember the band absolutely fucking losing it in the middle. Everyone Everywhere sounded like a pile of cack, yet its great on that bootleg. Not a great gig either. "We're New Order, and we are not splitting up"... You might as well, for four or five years after that album and gig etc. I whispered. In retrospect.

Reading 93 was recorded on multi track and mixed at a later date.There are the odd things that have been fixed, I think the most obvious is the bass on Regret, had a couple of bad mistakes in that.

"Live at the Reading Festival 1993" CD, has the complete show, where as 'Electronic Ecstasy' is missing 'Dream attack' and BLT.

Interesting comparison with Reading 93. My recollection of that tour was of New Order going through the motions, average performances and a bad atmosphere on stage, Reading was particularly awful for that and I came away not expecting to see them again.

And Mikes right regarding the bum notes/out of tune guitars, that was part of the fun!

I love the version of Sister Ray on the Glasto CD though, it's so punk and shambolic, and full of drunken madcap energy. I actually like this recording because it really sounds like a punk band playing electronic music. And Touched by The Hand of God sounds fucking great on this CD. Yeah, Bernard's voice is awful and they fuck up a lot of songs...thats part of the charm!

I only got to see them in 2001 and 2005, when they were a bit more comfortable performing.
