Brotherhood -"making of" doucumentary Sunday 25th on Xfm

As if the Sky Arts thing wasn't enough this weekend. Xfm are doing this at 10pm on Sunday night

Really interesting they picked 'Brotherhood'. That's when New Order let the Velvet Underground influence shine through again.

This is great news. A much underrated album. Who'd have thought it though? This is like a breath of fresh air. If only these guys were talking to each other. They could make millions touring.... The interest is still there and will be for decades to come.

I'll be interested to hear how they fitted all the writing and recording of it around promoting and touring the then recently released Low Life. Brotherhood was of course , according to Komakino, recorded in 1985

That explains why were up to ANGEL DUST with no breaks! The quality seems better coming from radio than my original Factory CD

Never really noticed that on 'As it is when it was', because it's a variation. But I can say that at the end of 'Way of life' the acoustic guitar is playing the riff from 'Love will will tear us apart', that's for sure.

Brotherhood was the album that got us into New Order when it came out back in 86. I then went back and got a copy of PC&L and Lowlife. Then Substacne came out, happy days. Never heard / bought Movement until 88.

A great listen. Interesting that Hooky, Steve and Barney each picked a different one of the three strongest tracks on the album as their favourites- AIIWIW, All Day Long, and BLT. Personally I'd just about side with Steve, All Day Long is a top track and one of the first NO ones I got into, but it's a pretty tight call, they're all great tracks !

Also, it was interesting to note when Barney said 'we still play BLT live to this day' he felt the need to qualify it with an 'erm, with Bad Lieutenant of course'. As though he was hiding something... I've got no idea when that interview with him and Steve took place but clearly this New Order thing has been in the works for some time...

Fair Whack for lettin' us know about that, great listen.

Radio seems to do that at times for some reason. The programme producer beefs it up? Remember hearing TBTHOG for the first time on John Peel and it was storming. Then when i bought the vinyl it didn't sound so urgent and lively.

Really enjoyed that!!

Not a great album but a great insightful podcast. Love the bashing the guys gave angel dust (although I still love that track it is a bit kitchen sink kinda production).

Just wanted to say, yes - i did "beef up" the WFTSC tracks, but not much. They're just 192 Kbps mp3's off the original CD - with the volume pushed up, and a bit of compression added. Some of the older tracks / live stuff's of dodgy quality- but the actual Brotherhood stuff are FLAC files.

Cheers Sam... Can you do a Lowlife or Technique one? Brotherhood is a fine album but most on here would consider Brotherhood as the one in between.. Not forgetting the might of PCL as well.

Yeah, as you say, I was restricted to Brotherhood because of the whole "25" thing - but I think it's more of a documentary about the cracks beginning to show. To be honest, it was just an excuse to get Johnny and Bernard talking about Electronic. You're quite right about it being an average album - and i thought it was refreshing to hear them admit as much.

I think it's the radio studio amplifiers that enhance the sound.

I was surprised to hear Hooky say that Sumner told him that he thought Hooky's worst bassline was in All Day Long.

I love that basswork! Reminds me of the epic bass in Lonesome Tonight as well -

Or was Sumner just trying to piss him off?

Well done on a great feature on Brotherhood. Very well put together and I really enjoyed. As I did when xfm did the programme on Total.

Yes, really well put together, most enjoyable. Don't understand the comments about it being a weak album, just shows there are a lot of New Order dance fans here, as opposed to appreciating the New order that combined rock with dance music.

I do agree that 'Brotherhood' on cd, doesn't quite flow the same, would be interesting to see what fans think would be a better CD running order than the LP concept.

In my opinion, it's a great album, I play it all the time.

Yeah, I've always liked this LP, always thought it was miles better than the vastly overrated 'Low-Life'

Yep really enjoyed the programme. The Brotherhood and WFTSC ( and Low Life and others) tracks sounded great. And some great interviews as well.Cheers
