Just received my copy of Mojo magazine and Bernard, Steve and Gillian are on the cover. Also comes with a potentially dodgy PCL covers cd. Haven't checked the article yet. I'm quite pleased though!

Been trying to get up off the sofa all day to go out and find a copy but have been too engrossed reading Lindsay Reade's book about her and Tony Wilson which i received for xmas. Ok will try and go to the shops now

The covers cd is actually ok. the best way i can describe it is a very stoned PCL.
Highlights include a cover of Ecstacy by Walls which is pretty moody and strange and a cover of Cries and Whispers by Lonelady (there are bonus tracks too, Lonesome Tonight and Murder feature also). Leave Me Alone by Destroyer pretty good too. Certainly worth a listen anyways. As always with these things pretty hit and miss.
Actually i quite like the cover of Lonesome Tonight even though i suddenly realised it sounds a blt like Coldplay! just try and ignore that!

So the CD is all covers is it? Nothing at all perfomed by the band themselves? Seems a shame. The Japanese 7" of

I will probably listen to the CD once if even that,maybe the bands concerned just want to get some publicity by whatever means are available,if these magazines didn't include CDs which may end up never being listened to anyway they would be a whole lot cheaper and would achieve higher sales..
(I still wouldnt buy 5 copies though)

Is this a trick question? Could it be James Dean? Terrence Stamp appeared on two different pressings of the same single (with Mozza on the pressings inbetween). But really I'm stumped.

This is pretty much standard policy for MOJO and I suspect they arrange the whole thing. If you want their front cover you gotta take the covermount CD too. Not so bad.
Uncut - the new one out in shops from Jan 4 is carrying a 4 page feature on Dec Hickey's book Heaven to Heaven, so another one to look out for.

id sooner head to vegas and get hitched like sinead o'connor for the publicity than that but you have a point. Problem for these bands is that they are going to be perceived as a new order clone and never fulfill the potential (thinking of "the wake") even though they have talent or probably better musicianship.
Worst thing though is that for a band if you make any sort of utterance about liking a particular band then everyone starts to pick out bits you may have unknowningly copied or were influenced by so im sure if any of these bands do anything new in the future you will have people looking out for a guitar effect,bass line or synth sound that is like new order and picking the shite out of the song instead of enjoying it.
very easily done as well to pick up bits of songs subconsciously from the bands your into, one of the first songs binned that i wrote had the same chord progression as disorder and i didnt notice it until i started to play disorder when i was practicing. another tune was more or less the theme tune from brookside.

Good idea from a sales point of view for the magazine and everyone seems to be doing well out of it bands/publicity, new order/publishing and sales for the magazine but i still think covers are a waste of time and cd space.

It's bloody frustratig when you do that, I gave up hiding my influences years ago, now I see it as a challenge to come up with a bassline that is obviously Hooky influenced but original, a few years back I spent days playing a riff which I later realised was pretty much every breath you take by the police! I hate that song too! sounded OK Hooky style though

I remember once reading how Paul McCartney when writing Lady Madonna was trying to sound like Fats Domino and Lennon was heavily inspired by Bob Dylan when writing songs such as Nowhere Man,so maybe sometimes having another artist in mind while writing can be a good thing, but I guess it is annoying when it happens by accident..
Some of the comments on this site are just shite. These bands have listened to these tracks and put their spin on them. Some are ok, some are very good and some are excellent.Lets get our heads out of our arses and appreciate the hard work that has gone into some of these covers and lets be honest some of us would not even know where to start. The other thing to remember is that some of these bands may come on here to see what NO fans think of their efforts. My views below.

Age of Consent and Ultraviolence had the greatest deviations from the originals and We All Stand was a bit of a departure too.
The stand out track for me is 586 with Lonesome Tonight hot on its heels.
Any chance some kind soul would zip this up for us yanks who won't get this issue for a few weeks?

Tried to buy a copy in Sao Paulo but the one I found has The Rolling Stones on the front and an awful free cd. Is the one with New Order the December or January issue?
Bernard's jowls are looking so scowly in that picture he's starting to resemble Lou "Aaaaa-gaaaa-doo doo doo" Reed.

some new bands to me - only heard three of them before!
I have very little time for these monthly music magazine-curated multi-artist suck ups of other people's albums/back catalogue/whatever. Most of the time (as in 995%), the songs are dreadful pieces of utter tosh.
Remember that Mojo "White Album Revisited" that they gave us a while back that came in TWO PARTS over two months? Can't say I even half enjoyed a single one of those 'reinterpretations'.
They then repeated the stunt with Abbey Road a year later - and that was just as cack.
I would imagine that if they ever came up with one called Crock-a-Dials they would just as likely have a baker's dozen of blessed Bunnymen tunes to desecrate beyond the point of no return: and yep, I wouldn't want to even touch THAT one with a two mile bargepole!

Finally got hold of a copy. Not read the main interview yet, read the Hook interview and 'Hiatus' bits. Nice they've got a review of the Troxy gig also. Great pics including the September 2011 rehearsal photos . The picture of them sitting at the kitchen table was originally in Q magazine, circa 1986 if i remember right.

I don't normally like these things myself but I've found myself really liking some of these, namely: Age of Consent. If I didnt know the band name I would have guessed at Ladytron, though as it happens I like The Golden Filter and was a fan of their "Solid Gold" single in '09. Your Silent Face. I think I saw Fujiya & Miagi at LoveBox festival around 2007. Not actually a duo but a four piece I think. 586 - I saw SCUM at the last Camden Crawl (Electric Ballroom). Not the easiest band to get into, but this is nice, and I strongly reccomend listening to their single SIGNAL-Paris Leave Me Alone. I dont know Destroyer at all but hey, I might just check them out now! i keep coming back to this track.

I picked up the magazine today and it looks like essential reading for your average fan over a good number of pages. Hooky even gets his own right of reply and the interviewer dares to ask risky questions about "the sniping".
Frankly, I'm bowled over to see someone other than bloody Pink Floyd, The Stones, Dylan or The Beatles on the cover of Mojo for once. NO have got to be the first non-60s band I've seen on the cover in years.
The CD sounds alright so far. It's free and it's a great album so I'll approach the reinterpretations with an open mind. Some of them will be shite granted but it might be worth wading through to find that one or two gem.
The covers of The Village and Leave Me Alone are the stand outs from what I've listened to so far. Not listened to the final 2 or 3 yet
Got mine today from Smiths - was hoping to keep it Minty Mint but took the cover mount CD off and it ripped the front cover to shreds ! Be careful how you take yours off.
BTW also noticed Uncut magazine had a feature on the forthcoming Heaven to Heaven book.

I'm not usually a fan of covers, but this album is excellent, nice to get other folks takes on your favourite album of all time. Some/most are better than some of the existing official remixes of New Order singles.....the article is comprehensive and interesting, not the usual rehash of well hackneyed stuff.
Hooky's response is interesting, if a little sad. I feel sorry that he has isolated himself into a corner in this way.
Listening to the cover of The Village last night certainly stirred long forgotten thoughts, feelings and emotions of those first few weeks and months listening to Power, Corruption & Lies in Autumn 1983 and being blown away by this new music and Saville's sleeve. Funny, it refreshed all those memories whereas the actual NO original hadn't done that for me in many many years.Guess that's one good thing about cover versions, they can make a song reborn almost and take you right back to first hearing the original.
This magazine won't be out here in the States for a good month, right?

Read something a year or two back where the writer was kind of saying the Power, Corruption & Lies era was almost like a new Psychedelia in a way with the flowers on the sleeve and lyrics like "Our love is like the flowers" , or a nod back to Psychedelia but looking forward still.Kind of thought yeah there's something in that yeah

They did do the Joy Division issue with Ian Curtis on the front back in 2005. Still got the issue .It was a really long feature, 18 pages. longer than NO feature in this latest issue. Took me a fair wedge of one Saturday afternoon to read it all .
Oh and they had Curtis on the front again in 2007 when Control came out. 16 pages for that one.
Great to see NO on the cover of a mag again. My favourite ever album covered by some intersting artists. All have done a good job, really enjoying listening to it.
Intersting point from Mr Morris in the article is that they haven;t done any Techique tracks yet and there are some pretty good tracks on that album (understatement or what) so it looks promising they are going to revisit or their albums.
I think they could release a EP of old tracks re-done in the summer to wet our appetities and an album out end of 2013, i think they will do one more.

That store on that corner sells the magazine in Manhattan. He told me that he will put away 5 copies for me on the side once he gets it.

Thanks Linus. I walk past that store all the time, as I am in the East Village just about everyday. That;s where I picked up the Uncut that had the New Order article last summer.
The CD is a cop out though. I would have loved to have heard the covers performed by more well known acts (making asses of themselves, natch), I mean, why couldn't The Killers, for instance, have covered the entire PC&L album for our listening pleasure?

My main impression on reading the article today as that there is unlikely to be any new music as New Order,Stephen Morris seems sceptical at any rate. The Bad Loo album was half way finished so presumably that has been totally scrapped aswell.
They are recording or working on new stuff as we speak, don't believe any of the stuff in the interviews, after new order broke up Steve said that he does not think that they will ever play but guess what they played last month everywhere, the bad loot song will probably be converted in to New Order type of songs and I noticed that they are avoiding interviews because they don't want to spill anything out but I know for sure that they would love to release an album this year but can't because of Lost Sirens coming so next year they will, I guarantee
I didnt find the covers CD very good on first listen. Only AOC and The Village made any acknowledgment. The others just past by.

Was what I should have expected really. Half-arsed indie-kid covers.
586 was OK though. But.... 586 is great, Michael Flowers Pops could probably do a good version.

Hey thanks for uploading it, I was going to skip listening to this cd because all of the NEGATIVE reviews of it on this website, but I decided to listen to it on my daily 5 mile walk which I take at night and to my suprise it sounds very good, it is no comparison to the original album but it is still decent, it is different but I like the sound of it.

Anyway, there's some good stuff on the CD, one or two stinkers but that's to be expected. After a few listens my favourites are Age of Consent, Lonesome Tonight and 5-8-6 which are all fresh takes on well established classics. I wouldn't pay for the CD but as it came free with the mag why not try to enjoy it.
The only cover I really couldn't get through was Zombie Zombie's The Beach which I thought sounded amateur and out of tune. It was the only where I thought "I could do better than that and I'm not even a muso". It sounded like they dedicated a grand total of half an hour to it.

quite like the Destroyer album and I agree there are hints of New Order in the album itself. Have not listened to the covers disk yet, will wait for the hard copy to arrive. must admit thought very interested to hear Destroyer's take on the tune...

funnily enough I've managed to lose one from the early nineties, light raincoat with 'dodging the bullets' or something like that under the gio goi label , put on a bit since then though!!

Picked up the Mag in McJ Books on Prince Street in SoHo NYC today. Great photos and story, plus a really great story about Bowie and Iggy in Berlin.
I'd already read the scanned version but picked up the physical magazine anyways....a nice keepsake.

I've just moved to Kingston Ontario. Anyone know of a good local newsagency that sells music mags like this? Haven't come across one yet. Found the local indie record store but nothing of that kind there. No New Order section either :(
So after reading the article.
- We can still expect a new Other two record
- hook says the Lost sirens sounds very lush which is a good thing
- We can definately expect a new record by New order from the remaining NO members
I came away from reading it thinking that...
- there's an unfinished Other Two album
- there's an unfinished Bad Lieutenant album
- there's an unfinished Barney solo album
- Lost Sirens will get released
- New Order Now new material hasn't begun

One question the recent interviews haven't covered is "Have you formally wound up Bad Lieutenant, Bernard?". Although considering four of Bad Lieutenant's live line-up are now in New Order and all that I'm guessing the answer is an obvious "yes". Jake Evans is getting on with his solo album anyway.
Rumours of a second Bad Lieutenant album have been going around for the past couple of years now. Depending on who contributed what (Evans) I suppose Bernard will either rework the material as a solo LP (with guests) or try to make it suitable for New Order Ltd to record*.
* - I realise that last notion is horrific to some fans
Gillian was getting more involved in the bl sessions as well according to the bass player, so Stephen,Gillian and Bernard working on something that could turn into a no release with some tweaking. Key thing is that Bernard seems to be writing a lot.

The thing that most struck me from the whole feature was that Hooky's tone was the most conciliatory in anything I've seen attributed to him for a long time. I think that takes a fair degree of humility, and suggests a period of calmer reflection than perhaps he's allowed himself (or been allowed) in some of the other quotes / interviews. Whether it leads to anything or not we could all speculate on, but I just thought it was encouraging that the olive branch seemed to be there. Or maybe I'm misreading it. Anyway, the Other Three come across as fairly relaxed, as they did at the Troxy gig, which is all good.
What I took from the interview was this:
Barney likes to be in control Hooky likes to be in control
New Order without Hooky means Barney can call all the shots. None of the others are going to be strong enough to disagree with Barney. I also take the view that Barney believes he has better musicians in the band now, maybe Barney never rated Hooky as a bass player?
It's not 100% new order and I won't view the band as new order as they used to be, and if there is new material I imagine it won't sound classic new order either, maybe some of the songs Barney was writing for his solo album and the BL album will indeed find their way into a new New Order album......... As to what it will sound like, am guessing BL meets Electronic meets The Other Two.......... So Republic then!

There's a time difference between Rome and GB. We're three weeks behind. Anyway I finally got to hear the CD today and I blinkin' love it. Age of Consent, 586 and Blue Monday stand out, but I enjoy the whole thing. And like herpes, I can't get it out of my system.
"I'd never detract from Peter Hook's bass guitar," Sumner says. "What he played was fantastic. But he was impossible for us to work with. He decided to leave the band. We didn't throw him out. We couldn't just ditch 30 years of heritage. So Tom Chapman learned the (bass) parts."
Really good read that. Backs up what I got from the mojo article. Some fans won't like his directness re: hooky but I like it, this Barney means business, this new order means business and I truly believe they are "here to stay"....... See what I did there? ;)
